Grapeshot: Does it make sense to add?

  • For anyone who might not know, Grapeshot is basically shooting smaller canonballs (usually bundled together with canvas) in place of one large cannonball, and was mainly used as a big antipersonnel shotgun.

The reason i'm not sure about adding this type of cannonball is because firing a blunderbomb serves the same purpose. Unless grapeshot has a better
chance of killing pirates, i wouldn't see the need to use it in place of a blunderbomb. Thoughts?

Well... I think you answered your own question.

  • @limbicfanatic Agreed! I'm just wondering if there's anything else the other forum members could see as a additional advantage (or disadvantage) to using grapeshot instead of blunderbombs. Something that may not have crossed my mind initialy.

  • @el-spaniardchi Grapeshot would be a great anti-personal weapon, if our cannons weren't already pretty dead accurate. The large spread of smaller shots would make up for the innacuracy. However, anyone who knows how to aim the cannon will be able to deal with the people on the other ship even without blunderbombs or grapeshot. I think it'd be unnecessary, even if I do want to see more traditional pirate things added to the game.

  • Yea, as you said, Blunderbombs essentially fill this role now, so I don't personally see a niche for them to fill anymore. I can't really think of anything good to apply to them that would really set them apart and keep everything viable for use in battles.

I had suggested them back before we had Blunderbombs and admittedly, since they wanted to get throwables in play, I am pretty accepting of the middle ground where we don't get an item named after a real world thing.

That all said, I'll be curious to see if anyone else has an idea to slip Grapeshot in and have it be meaningfully different than what we already have.

  • They could work to act as like a blunderbuss out of the cannon if two ships are really close but I don't see much opportunity to use them.

  • i wouldn't say no towards Grapeshots because they belong in the Golden Age of Piracy , but then Rare also should add a movement to hit the deck or hide behind the mast ,cannons , cantels to not get hit or get reduced damage , so i don't think they would add that and therefore it's just better to shoot blunderingbombs with cannons ... But Grapeshots does appeal to Pirate Hearts so no bad idea indeed , Sir!

  • I think it would be cool if grapeshot could shred sails and make your ship essentially half as fast for any given fight. This would be easier to hit than chainshot, but not as effective. Not sure how you'd make a fixing mechanic lol. Would be useful for broadsides on Megs, Kraken, and skeleton groups too.

I also wish we had more "pirate" things added.

  • I believe Grapeshot would work well if it served a different function. Instead of being a crew-sweeper (as it was historically), it would serve as a sort of heavy shot: short-range, but every hole it makes in a ship's hull will be the maximum size.
