Every great pirate ship in history had a name. Every shipwreck and Tall Tale ship has a name. I think we should be able to name our ship. Maybe we get one naming for free and that’s what we’re stuck with unless we want to pay for a name change (in gold). It would be really cool if we can change the color of the plaque as well. This could all be done by speaking to the shipwright.
We should be able to name our ships just like Athena’s Fortune
Naming ships are initially planned along with a ton of other stuff of a similar nature, in the “captaincy” update. This was going to be one of the first major updates to the game, but due to the distinct lack of content when the game first came out, the community made rare completely change the roadmap.

That might be overstating things a little, but Rare did take into account the community’s feedback about the content. Either way, they have had YEARS now to implement ship names if they were going to do so. I wish they’d do it too but maybe soon. We’ll see.

Every Shipwreck has a name? Really!? Because I have seen numerous shipwrecks with no name whatsoever.
@galactic-geek And yet ships can be set to have cosmetics the same way as an individual can set the cosmetic of their character or pet. More people are simply able to change it.
Just the way that anyone of the ship can set the cosmetic, any of the crew could set the name.
And before the "well they might fight over it". Well the crew has to agree/settle on what the ship looks like too. Adding a name to the cosmetic box isn't really that much of a difference.

Giving crews more reasons to argue isn't helpful.
@galactic-geek Anything Rare adds will give crews more reason to argue because not everyone will want the same thing. That's a weak argument in my opinion.

When you spawn in the ship should get a random name.
Every player gets one free customizable ship name as a session reward that stays with them. When they select this name they also set the cosmetics that come with it. Click on the name and boom the ship name changes and its cosmetics with it. The cosmetics can still be edited by the crew for that session.
If you want extra names or to change the preset cosmetics then you have to buy them for gold or ancient coins.
A list of active ships are on a log/sign at the shipwights. Two pages, one with active ships and the other with a list of lost ships (last 6 to 10 sinks).
When a galley sinks its name could be used in sunk vessel missions, in fact some variation of sunk sloops and brigs would be nice too.
Each time you sink in a session you get a Roman numeral added to the name😂
Lots of possibilities; I'm surprised Rare hasn't implemented one of them yet.
Would it be expensive or difficult to do, or time consuming maybe?
Feels like a business opportunity going begging here. I'd pay gold or doubloons for the right to name my ship. Betcha there are people that'd pay real money to make their ship's nameplate all fancy, too.

Ship livery is also individually owned but is also interchangeable. Someone else in my crew can put on cosmetics that I don’t own. I feel ship nametags should work the same.
My idea is for Rare to introduce different Ship Nameplates such as “Silver Blade Plaque” and the “Ghost Plaque” as ship customization. The plaques would be named after their individual cosmetic names and also be colored to match the rest of the set they are from. Those plaques would be individually owned so they can be individually named.
Let’s say we both have “The Silver Blade” plaque. My name written on the plaque is different than yours. I equip mine first, I named the ship. If you put your plaque on the ship, even though it’s the exact same plaque the ship would change its name.
I would also like to see the ability to see the ships name through a spyglass. Obviously this option would have to be a majority vote of the crew to allow your ship name to be seen by other crews. Or you can have the ship’s name visible whenever the reaper flag or emissary is up.
