Is it me or have islands gotten.. a little too crowded of enemies?

  • I'm a sloop player and I play alone or with a friend. Since the season 3 update, which I've really enjoyed otherwise, I think Rare has increased the rate of enemy spawn by a lot! To the point that I often spend something from 30 minutes to an hour on islands fighting off enemies because I get little to no downtime to do what I came to do.

This means that I often get lots of good loot, but I think it also extends my play sessions a little too much for my taste because I don't feel anymore in control of what I am going to do on my visit to an island. Accidents or unplanned moments can create exciting gameplay (e.g. Kraken, or you find an ashen key captain, or you find a mission for a secret treasure and it's exactly on the way you were planning to go, you meet other players, etc.) but I think that if maybe the balance was a little on the "Sea of thieves is a chill game" before, now it's more "SoT is a little FOMO inducing".

To the point that to avoid enemies I had to leave behind many average skulls in my voyages because they weren't worth the trip from island to ship and risking to face again other captains or those new enemy types that can drop gems, and I didn't stop to ship relics and similar because I felt I was getting TOO sidetracked

  • I wouldn't say crowded, the spawn rates of ghosts and ocean crawlers needs to be toned down for sure.

  • I wouldn't worry about it, every event caused an increase in spawn rates. I think it's to make sure that everyone gets to experience the new content, no matter what you'll be doing.

    • During the meg event / shark week, sharks would spawn as soon as your toe touched the water.
    • During the gunpowder skelly event, each island constantly spawned groups of gunpoder skeletons.

After hopping on an island to grab something shiny, we spent 10 minutes to fight skellies, ghosts and ocean crawlers. When we swam to a sunken ship we were suddenly being attacked by sirens. It's quite funny if you ask me, mixes things up.

  • Yeah, I was on an island where there were too many mobs to even fit on the island. They were glitching into the water. The spawn rate was insane. 10 of the new red guys. 2 eel guys. 1 clam guy. 7 phantoms. 10 skeletons. All at once. This is on top of the normal skeleton spawn. And then we'd kill all of them and they would respawn in that same number. This happened over and over while we were trying to find a few Xs on a small island for the first map of our gold hoarders. We had to quit after that one island because it took hours just killing off mobs tediously. It was fun once, but it got frustrating by wave 10.

  • I also think that there are too many enemies on the islands now!
Especially considering that they are now much stronger!

Not only does it take extra time and effort when searching for a treasure, solving a riddle, etc. (for me it is still tolerable), but now for me it is also the deprivation of the opportunity to just relax on the island alone or together with a friend. It is now impossible to go fishing from the shore and sit by the fire while the fish is being prepared!

Sea of Thieves has a great atmosphere for relaxation, but now there is no way to enjoy it!
And new players especially will not be able to do this, because for them it will be a constant stress both at sea and now also on land

  • I was going to search for the Black Pearl, I saw the new flare, no other pirates were there.

But I kept sinking every skelly ship I saw, and there was always some ship about.

I guess I can rescue the Black Pearl another time.

  • for my taste the spawnrate was even to high before the update when playin solo, ( not to hard i have np solving a fotd solo) but cant count how often the ai annoyed me ,doing a thieves haven run and all 20 seconds powderkeg skellies spawnin , or doin a vault run and skellies spawn non stop on small islands , do they have playtesters in the house?do they really believe that annoying stuff makes the game fun to play?

  • @fishst1ck and as soon as you jumped on a ship with me it hit a rock!

  • I can see the spawn rate being high for some people's tastes (especially any new players on their first voyages). However, I, personally, love it. The new dangers are actually interesting, and I find the sea of thieves is at it's best in the midst of absolute chaos. Best moment I ever had in game was a three way battle over a fort of the damned while wrapped by a kraken. Cannon and small arms fire filling the air and somehow making it out afloat and with the life changing chest of legends on board. The more chaos the better story you have for the tavern afterwards.

  • Yeah, was doing the Athena run on Thieves. I think I was attacked by the kitchen sink at one point. Bit over the top. Well no actually. Love a bit of a scrap, but as they haven't added any more places to top your weapon up or extra food, it just gets on ya b$*bs.

I thought I was in a zombie game at one point. Resident Thieves!

Not sure it's much fun to solo anymore. I was with a couple of guys not very good at fighting so had to do all the work and find the treasure. To the point you add PVP once everyone gets over the second POTC tall tale and it's going to be a bit of a pooop show.

I'm not the best, but I did the Gold Hoarder boss on my first try without dying once so not too bad. Didn't stand still for a second LOL

  • @fishst1ck Yeah I agree. I think traditionally the spawn rates have been higher and get evened out after a while in a patch/hotfix. That said, it certainly does make things a bit more fighty.... Solo would be an absolute chore gauging by what our duo sloop ran into last night.

  • We'll likely see a reduction in spawn rates as S3 progresses, possibly as soon as July 1st, when the Flags of Friendship event goes live (but will probably be sometime after, even as late as the start of S4).

  • I dislike it when any game has the mob spawn rates at a high enough level that as soon as you start to focus in on your original task (ie, solve a riddle, or start digging) more show up and stop you in the middle of a task. There has to be some sort of balance between mobs showing up when you first get on an island and giving you time to do what you actually need to do.

It reminds me of how your phone will ring at the most inappropriate time, like as soon as you sit down to eat or watch a movie.

Wait ocean crawlers spawn outside of tall tales? I’ve seen phantoms and sirens but never those creatures. Or even have them jump my ship. :( I’m missing out.

Oh man, remember when you so much as dipped a toe in and they were biting it, haha.

    Ahh the good ol days.

I miss the times when I wanted to actually kill Captain Skeletons cause they could drop a map sometimes leading to the mega explosion barrel.
That rush when you found a normal Captain.
The excitement when you closed in on the dig-spot.
And the joy when it really was a Mega.
And now its just a treasure-chest with average stuff in it. :(

No fun allowed. " Hope for the very rare Mega in a shipwreck. "
Pfffffffffffffffffffffffffff... so depressing. Once you tasted cake, you just can't go back to rusk.
