@Rare Private Servers When?

  • It has gotten to the point that it's difficult for me and my aunt to even enjoy ourselves sailing the seas. We're not the kind of pirates to wanna start trouble, and all we enjoy doing is the PvE in the game, whether it's fighting the skeletons, digging for loot, or possibly even fishing! We're getting annoyed by the countless times we get chased by another ship that we can't do anything but run, just to escape the jerks from shooting us down just for the sake of sinking us.

There will even be times that we'll be up against a fort or fighting an Ashen Lord, almost done with completing the event, when on the horizon we see a Galleon or a Brigantine sailing up to the fort, forcing me and my aunt to raise anchor and flee from the almost complete fort or Ashen Lord. We haven't even been able to do the new special forts once together because someone always comes up and claims the fort for themselves. We're not the kind of pirates to wanna fight, and even if we did we'd be at a disadvantage with how many pirates would pile on us at once.

We really hope for private servers to become a thing, even if it means we can't do some things in it, such as the Fort of the Damned which requires to die from another player. When I'm with my aunt we just wanna be left by ourselves so we can enjoy our times sailing together, taking on skele ships, Ashen Lords, Megalodons, and maybe even a Kraken or two. We don't wanna spend so much time running from another ship when we could be spending that time having fun and making some gold.

I do understand it's called the Sea of Thieves, but it shouldn't be the Sea of [Mod Edit]holes...

Most coming at some point is private session where you can invite someone, but they're mostly used for community events so.. as Rare says you earn no gold, no rep, pretty much can't do anything but sail.

The game is PvEvP, none of us have the luxury of just being guaranteed to play and enjoy PvE without the potential for someone to engage us. It's a core concept of the game.

Oh.... I thought that's what they were asking about. Are 'servers' different from 'sessions'?

May just be arguing semantics over specific wording, but

The implications behind private servers vs the private/custom sessions are usually just different.

Private servers come with the expectation of loading up a server with just you and your group, and can play like regular. Earn rep, gold, cosmetics, etc.. some people even say it could just be a different mode where you earn separate gold rep and rewards, and we know none of that is happening

The reality is the custom sessions (can still be considered private, since they'd be invite only) aren't really the game.. they'd be a barebones experience of the game, you earn nothing, and you can really only sail around since they're main utility is for community created events, or content.

  • @tre-oni

Yeah, reading back through, the OP wasn't too specific with what they meant. I assumed they were just talking about what Rare has already discussed.

Has Rare clarified at all on what the private sessions will include? I know there's no progression, but will stuff like forts, sea monsters, and skellie ships still occur?

  • 'Stuff' still does occur :D Wouldn't allow me to tag you lol

  • @mistersir91 Ahoy me matey! Please refrain from bypassing the profanity filter by using asterisks as this goes against the rules of the Forum :) I have edited your post accordingly.

  • @lizalaroo

    Ah, okay. Thanks. =)

  • @mistersir91 never, I'm afraid.

Sea Of Thieves is a shared world adventure. Other players make up the threat, challenge, and frankly, are ultimately the point of this game.

    Not much.

In their most recent podcast Joe just mentioned no progression casually, as he transitioned into saying the core of the game is the shared world aspect, and thats their core concept they wont compromise

  • Sadly as others have said, I'm not sure it's every coming.

It seems like something they put together for their Twitch partners to help market the game and let them create specific sessions and scenarios easier.

....or maybe it was so they could show off streamers actually "seeing" the Shrouded Ghost so players keep thinking it's actually real?

  • @mistersir91

There will be private servers available for content creation purposes where no gold, reputation, or commendation progress can be earned.

  • @va.ca-hombre a dit dans @Rare Private Servers When? :

Has of now, you have all the pve rng events (including world events). You also can't interact with the NPCs in any meaningful way (you cannot access shops and you cannot buy voyages) but you still have access to bottled quests.

It never does! The profanity filter doesn't like his name the poor chap!

  • @lizalaroo I do apologize if I did bypass the profanity and such. I will be sure never to do that again.

And for everyone else I was mostly wondering if by private servers I meant if we could make a server for ourselves so that we're the only ones in it, unless we invite others to join us, and still be able to earn gold and do other events and such.

Seeing some of the responses it's kind of a shame, but I do understand their decisions. Just stinks that me and my aunt have to get chased down by players a lot of times :(

  • @mistersir91 alas this truly is the nature of the game.
It is a tale as old as time (apologies - couldn't resist a Disney quote today).

Many a pirate has requested it and to most it feels unfair allowing unfettered access to gold and rep without the risk everyone else faces.

  • @mistersir91

Yes, from the sound of it the private/custom servers will have stuff like Megs, Krakens, skellie ships, etc. But you will be unable to earn gold or take voyages other than messages in bottles.

Still, could be a way to unwind when you're feeling frustrated with hostile pirates. Could also be a good way for some players to kinda ween themselves off the feeling that they need gold to have a successful session.

  • Sir-Hombre It's going to be fantastic for crews like Fortune to sort out Skullball games!

No more hours of trying to sort out a server beforehand!

  • @sshteeve

Indeed, I would guess that was one of the driving forces behind the idea. Though I'll be interested to see what else people use it for as well. I'd love to see a comedy series ala Red vs. Blue take place in SoT.

  • Man that would be brilliant! The community is there - the characters are there - they will now have an unrestricted, unfettered outlet!

  • @mistersir91 No worries me matey! Just had to bring it to your attention :)

Sea Of Thieves is a shared world adventure. Other players make up the threat, challenge, and frankly, are ultimately the point of this game.

That was a necessity in the release because the initial content was lackluster but that's not the case actually, Sea of Thieves has now enough PvE content to satisfy the crowd that doesn't enjoy the PvP side of the game.

This game needs a singleplayer mode, a coop only mode (private servers or not), with full progression, who really cares?, this game has not competitive mode and cosmetics or commendations don't give any edge. Even games with a real progression like Elite Dangerous have a solo mode and nobody lost his/her sanity about it.

I can't understand why the devs are being so stubborn about this, give players options, now you can unlike at release.

Because it's not the core of the game. They're not doing it, simple.

It's not anyone else's fault but the people complaining that after 3 years of being told constantly by Rare, that they still can't come to terms, or understand that fact.

Podcast as recent as a month ago has Joe Neate explaining they're not compromising on their core. Shared World Adventure Game. PvEvP. It's fundamental to them, and it's going nowhere. Most anyone gets is an absolutely zero progress custom server tool.

The game is 100% intended to be PvEvP, and they're keeping it that way.

That game doesn't NEED PvE only, it needs people who are capable of informing themselves of a product they're buying, and acknowledging that they aren't going to be able to force the devs to change their core design and intention because they didn't like it.

Now.. release.. no different. Irrelevant in regards to pushing PvE servers. Its not part of the concept of the game as a whole.

  • @tre-oni not compromising in their core, fine, it doesn't mean they are right. Perhaps they don't trust in the product?, perhaps they think that if they do this the PVP Lords lose their "farms"?

SoT PvP is very fun and there will still be tons of players playing this way, but there is room for other ways to enjoy this game, like the new update shows.

  • @lobofh

there is a post about Rare's thoughts on PvPvE (including a link to the most recent Sea of Thieves Podcast that discusses it) here: https://www.seaofthieves.com/community/forums/topic/136693/pvpve-the-team-s-thoughts/1

You can read an article by Joe here here in regards to Private/Custom Servers.

There is also a thread for discussion of Custom servers here, please post your thoughts and feedback there.

@deckhands if you would do the honors?

  • @lobofh said in @Rare Private Servers When?:

@tre-oni not compromising in their core, fine, it doesn't mean they are right. Perhaps they don't trust in the product?

Why is this always the thought process for PvE only advocates?

You're the one who's wrong if you think that way.

They designed their product a specific way. Its intentional. Its supposed to be that way. You not liking it doesn't make them wrong. It's literally their creation, and it was created this way, and they've never been misleading about it.

Seems to me they actually have faith in the product. Unrelenting and uncompromising on their vision in the face of all these randoms who come in to tell them they're wrong with their vision and concept...

Some things just aren't for some people. If you're not okay with the core concept of something.. buying it and complaining for change is a personal problem, and doesn't make whoever made the product wrong.

  • Yeah, a thread where nobody can discuss.

@tre-oni , they designed their product a specific way?, more like they released an Early Access alpha with no content and PvPvE only was the unique way to fill the gaps. Me not liking it make them totally wrong, for your info...this doesn't mean they must change it, just adding some feedback.

Anyways, it looks like it's a hot topic that can't be discussed with closed megathreads and users calling for moderation reinforcements and all that jazz so I will leave it here, have fun with the new update.

  • @lobofh because it has been discussed and Rare have spoken out about it.

if you would read what the Rare Employee actually says you would know all there is to know about their standing on the issue

  • Ahoy!

The team have recently given their thoughts on the topic of PvPvE and discussed it in our latest Podcast.

There is also a thread for discussion of Custom servers here where you can add your thoughts rather than duplicating topics.

Sea of Thieve will always be a shared world adventure game, with elements of both PvP and PvE but Joe did speak about Custom Servers about a year ago. These servers will not offer Gold or progression IF they become available to the public. Private Servers are still being tested with our Partners.

    Dropping anchor on this now.

    Thanks,
    j0toro
