There is a mechanic in which when the sword (cutlass) slashes someone, it temporarily stops them from moving and with the three hit combo practically gaurantees that you are going to be extremely low health before you can escape, I call this the 'sword vortex'. Many people are going to say 'block then', 'keep your distance', 'blunderbomb them', 'kill them first'. But realistically, I don't have infinite blunderbombs, and there is more than 1 person to kill the majority of the time, and no, you can kill more than one person, it's called skill. Also, I don't like sword and don't want to have to use it just to survive and get kills. In addition, keeping your distance is a struggle, on small areas on sloops, getting caught by surprise, and more, also I don't want to have to be forced to use unfavorable weapons just to counter a sword. Finally, after being hit with the three hit combo stuck on the spot, you are one hit for the sword, and they can jump over you and kill you, making it virtually impossible to fight back, or you can run, and they can follow you until you finally look round to shoot them and they catch up and finish you.
'sword vortex', or sword stopping movement.
@coolguy56562 You should probably learn how to use all of your weapons to be most effective. For example, if you know how to use the sword (hint - most don't), you should never be cornered, trapped, stunned, or even outnumbered in close range. Why? Because of the sword dodge, which allows you to immediately go on the defensive, get out, and even pass through an enemy (something you can't otherwise do). And yes, you can, and should, do it when stunned. But for it to work, you just need to block first.
If you don't want to learn how to use the sword, then you're accepting that you will be at a disadvantage in certain scenarios and will probably need to prepare for that in other ways, such as bunny-hopping, not missing, and even using bombs.

The point is that I'm at a disadvantage not using the sword and I want to be at an equal level double gunning.I'd recommend getting a blunder/sniper combo. Blunderbuss is very OP against sword because it uses the sword's weakness, that being it HAS to be very close range in order to kill you, against them since the blunderbuss does 100 damage close range. Not only that but even if you do miss the 1 shot tap, or you get hitreged, the blunderbuss will still make them take knockback and will get them off of you. Second, NEVER under ANY circumstance should you be down below deck on a sloop, brig, or galleon for extended amounts of time if you value your life. If you're above deck you ALWAYS have the option of jumping into the water, however if you're below deck if makes it so much easier for someone to rush you and kill you because you have very little space to run.
Secondly, fighting a ship with 4 doublegunners is INFININTLY harder than fighting a ship with 4 sword users. Because when you are fighting a sword you can literally jump into the water and they are useless, you can also just keep your distance and they physically can't hit you. However if you try and board a ship with 4 sniper/blunder users, you are going to get rolled because it's just a matter of how many hitregs they get on you before you die. There's no safe spot you can be in order to not get shot at by the doublegunners. However if you fight 4 sword users, they generally just spam M1 and have no idea what they're doing.
When you get into the combo, generally speaking you should either blunderbuss them away from you and if the full combo didn't go through then you can just heal on the boat. If your blunderbuss ISN'T reloaded then it's better to swap to your food and jump into the water while healing. That way when you land you'll have a decent amount of health, AND you have time to reload your weapons. If they follow you into the water you can easily win because the sword has no range compared to your blunder/sniper.
Whole point being, while sword is more annoying to fight against because it's more common & it requires less skill to use effectively than doublegunning, doesn't mean that it's OP or impossible to fight against. Further more, you shouldn't be able to win a 1v4 in the first place unless the opposing team is WAY worse than you. I guarantee you that you will have a much easier time fighting sword users if you just keep these 2 principles in mind:
Don't go down below deck unless you HAVE to, for food or ammo, but then come right back up
Jump in the water when you're low or have gotten cornered above deck. Sword is much harder to be effective underwater and usually at least 1 of them follow you in.
And if you are below deck and see someone coming at you with a sword, do NOT try to fight that. Blunderbuss them away if needed, then run away until you're above deck and kill them once they've gone up the stairs.

The point is that I'm at a disadvantage not using the sword and I want to be at an equal level double gunning.Weapons have different advantages.
Guns have advantages from range and swords close. When gunning, you'd be in an advantage if you we're further away,
and disadvantage when close. You'd have to have a sword to be in an equal advantage :)

What game have you been playing where the sword stun actually works?? It hasn't worked for me since a few weeks after they said they added it back in/ fixed it like 7 months ago.
Also that is the down side to double gunning. If you aren't able to keep your distance or kill them in the first 2 shots then you are going to get sword hit.
Also I was under the impression that sword vortex and sword tornado were the same thing where the enemy crew just chases you down with swords and you can't do nothing because their combat is horrible??
You need to figure out how to use your load out, the "when they get close they kill me" isn't an argument. They are suppose to kill you at close range. Thats the sword, either get one and block or get better at using double gun load outs.

The point is that I'm at a disadvantage not using the sword and I want to be at an equal level double gunning. You're only at a disadvantage in certain scenarios - typically at closer ranges (like in the ship). Don't play their game - draw them into yours. If they try to close in, shoot them or knock them back with a blunderbuss or blunderbomb.
@kaijoi Jumping in the water might help keep you alive, particularly if they're only armed with sword and blunderbuss, but if they're armed with an EoR or flintlock and bombs, along with their sword, and jump in after you, the only real advantage you'll have over them is ammo count. Besides, if their goal is to get you off of the ship and/or keep you off, then they just automatically succeeded the moment you choose to go overboard and won't have a need to finish you off. Also, if you use the time to heal and reboard, you're at a huge disadvantage because they'll have the high ground, cover, and the right weapons to keep you pinned. In essence, you make yourself an easy target. If they go into the water after you and you run to a ladder, you'll be done in with a shot or bomb to the back, in addition to whomever may be waiting for you at the top.
That's precisely why I like boarders - they're easy to spot, pick off, and allows me to focus on their now weakened ship.
Oh absolutely. You are in a terrible situation whenever you have to jump in the water because a good crew can easily either snipe to kill you, or just guard ladders. But when faced with a situation where your only 2 options are "Stay on board and die" and Jump into the water to live longer" I'm going to pick the one that gives me a better chance of living.
