Optimize for Xbox?

  • My friends and I started playing to get a fresh experience after frantic MP games like COD, PUBG and Overwatch.

Initial reactions: beautiful, solid combat and exploration, rewarding levelling system.. and just sailing can be super cathartic sometimes.

But can we talk about loading times??? Every single one of my friends has mentioned it on their own, but it takes 15-20 mins just to load a game, and we are all terrified of dying (especially in combat) because THAT system takes 5-10 mins. Before we knew about how to disable crossplay, we were always getting tuned by players who were seemingly spawning faster than we could sink their boats.... And lord help us if we fell off a boat in anything but calm conditions. Using the mermaid with any kind of combat going on is just as painstaking.

I thought maybe everyone had this problem, but then I watched a PC streamer load darn near instantly and then respawn during combat at a fraction of the time.

Honestly this disparity between load times seems broken. My friends and I are probably going to stop playing because any PVP combat just turns into a nightmare of loading screens and ends in frustration.

We are all rocking OG Xbox one's.

  • @a-cruel-pun I play on XBox One S, crossplay server only...
You are a bit exaggerating with your numbers...20 minutes to get into the game? NEVER! A friend plays also on the original XBox One and doesn't take that long...

Anyway, it won't get fixed with updates, I'm not a technical expert, but it has to do with how the game loads stuff...you can only do like I did: I bought an external SSD just for Sea of Thieves, the loading times are now significantly shorter, from loading into the game, to mermaid or ferry spawn...

  • @schwammlgott Hmm ok I'll check out that option you mention. Just kinda sucks that it costs extra for hardware to level the playing field.

It definitely helps being able to limit just to Xbox controller players too!

  • @a-cruel-pun but check out first, which SSD's you can use...it has to be at least 256MB SSD (I heard, it's 128MB now, so need to check)

  • I'm more annoyed that they have silently nerfed the field of view options for Xbox.
Talk about a game going backwards on updates.

  • @a-cruel-pun you do have to realise that especially with OG XBoxes you are running this game on 7 year old hardware
And even at the time of release the storage drive inside the system is quite slow due to choices Microsoft made at the time which sadly they also didn't fix with the release of any of the X and S updates.

There is a reason both the PS5 and Series X are coming with SSD’s this time around

  • @a-cruel-pun said in Optimize for Xbox?:

it costs extra for hardware to level the playing field.

Keep in mind that PC players had to spend good money for their SSD's too. Saying it 'levels the playing field' makes it sound like PC players are just given better loading times for free compared to Xbox's.

Agree, also imagine how many XBox players use a SSD and play in XBox servers...they have the advantage now

  • My wife plays on xbox while I'm on PC. If she dies I dont expect her back for at least 2 min. Too many things to load on a not up to par harddrive. Cant access the info fast enough.

  • If any of that is remotely true, I'd say you have issues with your Xbox as those times are ridiculous. I also play on OG Xbox One, a Day One console for that matter and not once have I experienced any of what you are claiming. Even so, the base hard drive in the console is pretty slow with does contribute to longer load times on the Xbox, which is why I use an external 7200RPM USB 3.0 drive. Game loads quickly, respawns are typically less than 10 seconds. I do get slightly faster times when I use my SSD but you can get the speed up to acceptable levels (and on par with PC players) if you just upgrade to a better external hard drive (or SSD if you have the money to burn and don't need as much space).

  • @dlchief58

Make sure it's USB 3.0. Either a 7200rpm HDD or SSD will improve your load times a lot. (SSD - most expensive and fastest). We use 7200rpm 2TB HDD here for the Xbox, big difference in performance and storage.

  • @wagstr Thanks for pointing that out, I just assumed that was common knowledge but realize that isn't that common anymore. I'll amend the post for clarity.
