Hunters of the Deep Event Discussion

  • Ahoy Mates!
Recently I've been attempting to complete the Hunters of the Deep event.
I've had varied success so far, I've defeated 3 Hungering Ones and spotted a Shadow Maw. (Unfortunately a Skelly fleet sunk me before I could get him. Curses!)

So I'm up to 54 Shark Teeth, at this rate I should hopefully be done before the Event's dead line hits.

One strategy I've had success with is something I call: "Shroud Patrolling".
How it works is you just have to hug the edge of the map and sail from one border of the map to the next, I've gotten 2 Megalodons already using this Strategy.

Try the strategy out if ya get time and let me know how successful it was for ya!

Anyways, I'd like to know how everybody else's hunts are going:

    • Are ya grinding for Megs or just letting em come to ya?
    • How many shark teeth are ya up too?
    • Are ya done or still missing some teeth?
    • What kind of Megs have ya seen? Have ya seen the Shrouded Ghost?
    • Have ya come up with any new strategies for finding and battling the beasts?

Let me know what ya think mates!
Until then good hunting out there! 🦈

  • @sgt-palooggoo 95 teeth is what im currently at, did two solo sloop sessions basically just faffing about sailing at half sail making sure to keep a distance from rock formations and islands and did the one shot activities at during those sessions, got 3 hungering ones and 25 teeth from the single shot to a total of 55.

Then yesterday i did one session on a gally and we only focused on getting both merchant and OoS emmisary ledgers up to top tier (since we had all the others managed already) before the reset of the ledgers. In a +/- 4 hour session we got two crested queens bringing my total up to 95 teeth so just 5 more left to go.

During that last session we made sure that as soon as meg music hit we would drop anchor so it wouldn’t get away from us

  • @sgt-palooggoo about 120 teeth...I do my stuff, emissary and commendations...and when it appears I kill em...no need to look for it, it will come!

  • Iv found meg appear after forts/ world events and after sinking enemy ships

  • Yes i wondered if megs were actually world events, like krakens appear when there are no cloud events active. Perhaps its the same for the meg. Though one actually spawned as i made a mess of the ghost ships and sank.
I also wonder whether its after certain time on the server, the longer the time, probability will be higher, i just dont have the time to be on hours at a time.
I dont think there are bodies of water that are better than others as they seemed to be anywhere before.

Rare, think there is a bug in the "summon the meg" shanty, it doesnt work

  • @sgt-palooggoo

One method... although I haven't tried it for this event.
Is visit the "Shores of Gold"... every-time or it seems like it.
Meg tends to spawn on reaching open water on leaving this area.

  • Hey, thats not a bad idea @piratecraggy!
One always shows up after yer done the shores of gold!

  • @sgt-paloogoo
Aye that it does... it almost like the big beastie knows about our booty.
    A cunning foe indeed :)

  • @piratecraggy, @PirateCraggy!
    I did it!
I got all the shark teeth!

I was sailing with a ship I had formed an Alliance with when the Crested Queen came at us!
We defeated her, then no less than a minute later the Shadow Maw arrived as well!
So we beat him too and that got me the 10 more shark I needed!

They must be attracted to multiple vessels or something.
Either way, I'm happy I got all the shark teeth I needed!

  • @sgt-paloogoo

    Nice One!!!
    It feels good. :)
Nothing worse than being so close to completing something, & it's only a pesky Meg or two in your way.
Have noticed that as well, re. multiple vessels, maybe it's something to do with when they spawn & first latch on, you pull them along with you a bit of the way, they don't quite go away. Possibly even a sweet spawn point between two regions, maybe an overlap.

What area of the Sea were you sailing at the time?, would love to see on the map if there is possible rhyme or reason to this spawn.

The game does throw strange things at us occasionally, I'm sure we have all encountered at some stage being Krakened, Skellyed & Megged all at the same time. It's a different type of fun, when we discover the color of fun.. is brown :)

None the less... congrats matey, time to enjoy that ship set!!!

  • Initially, my crew and I started out actively searching for megaladons. It became rather tedious though as we'd sail the same stretch and spent hours just waiting. We switched instead to completing quests and encountering megaladons as and when they appeared.

Our tactics evolved as we went on. After each encounter, we'd briefly talk over what had/ hadn't worked. At first, we had troubling killing the megs as they would get away from us (we were taking too long). Our approach at that point was to raise sails to bring us to a stop and the just turn the wheel to spin us on the spot. The main issue that became apparent was that the megs would get quite a distance away, making it harder to hit them.

Our current approach instead means we keep the sails at least at half. One person kept us moving, avoiding rocks, islands and keeping us in the open waters. When/if the meg starts to move away, we pursue. Over time, our accuracy with the cannons has also improved. We have managed to successfully defeat the last few megs we have encountered.

Overall, keeping busy with other things broke up the meg hunting and made the meg encounters feel more frequent. I don't believe there are any special places or conditions for the encounters, other than it will attack in open waters. I'd suggest sailing in the calmer waters, near Sanctuary and Golden sands. It's makes it easier to spot and shoot. Places like the Wilds have quite rough seas in comparison.

My crew and I managed to complete the whole set (100 shark teeth) a couple of days ago.

  • We did it all yesterday. I thought being as we only had 3 days left we should get started expecting to cut it fine so we sailed around looking for one for a hour or more and got bored so put a reapers emissary up and went to do a fort as you do..

Lo and behold 2 minutes after selling the fort loot we found and killed an Ancient Terror (40 teeth) then did a few of the one-off challenges.

1 x sold 10 shark portions to hunters call (5)
    1 x got the blue flame (5)
1 x lit beacon at plunder valley with blue flame (5)
1 x read merricks journal at reapers (5)

    Time for more meg hunting...

Found and killed a Shadowmaw (30)
Found and killed a Crested Queen (20)

Job done but was a 9-10 hour session all in all, good fun though.. Love the figurehead!

I also appreciate the fact my boys got the shipset too, they often miss out on this sort of stuff.

Aye, thanks mate, nice to have the grind over. I'll be using that ship set for many days hence. (Its one of favorite new sets)

We were in the ancient isles at the time around this place:

I've encountered multiple emergent threats before while traveling in convoy with Allied boats before.
The server must think you need a challenge or something.

  • @sgt-paloogoo
    Congrats.

For next time or just grinding commendations, any open area like that posted works.
I tried sailing a bit east of the northstar seapost, sailing around that area between the rocks, the seapost, and island.
With a voyage down, and a shark hunter figurehead.. worked for me. 4 meg 1 skele in a few hours.
