Server Merging thoughts -expanded

  • I’ll state my two ideas regarding server transfers at the top. And then explain my reasoning at the bottom for those interested.

    1st Provide a countdown timer before server transfers happen.

    2nd Allow Rank 5 Reapers to transfer servers with flag intact via a controlled mechanic.

    Thoughts expanded

    1st I think a server transfer countdown would be a huge benefit to everyone.
    A clever solo player might hide his loot on a nearby Island since he can’t watch his ship all the time while doing the quests and some of the larger islands block view. The Countdown would give him time to collect it.
    Some solo players do forts Via a rowboat, and if the server transfer happens as you finish the fort and before you can get your haul loaded in you can lose it all. And that’s saying a lot since doing a fort with out a single death can be a achievement in its own, to lose it to a server transfer sucks.
    Supplies: Some fights you can’t help to pick, when you get grabbed by a kraken, find a meg upon your aft or have a Skeleton ship pop up on you and you are forced into a fight, ok. But other times you seek out the trouble for commendations loot or rep. If you know the server’s going to transfer soon you might just hold off picking that fight, because if you get in the fight and mid fight get moved to another server or after winning and taking the time to turn around your gal and sail back in to the wind where your loot is floating only to get jerked out of the server in to another. Me and my friends call this robbery of loot and supplies getting Rared. It happens frequently and is not enjoyable and seems something with a little warning could be minimized further.

    2nd When a Reaper is effective and aggressively making the sea a dangerous place the prey animals tend to leave.
    All that work getting your flag to Rank5 so you can find more players basically turns in to beacon for new players coming in to find a more secure server.
    Allow this person to sacrifice one level of his flag to transfer servers, now a level 4 reaper will be on a new server with new targets who are already committed to the missions they are on, maybe call it the Sea Dog slot, but allow them to move through servers.

    Possible additional benefit to reduce server transfer frequency.
    If you warn people of the server transfer, they may just call it quits if they were thinking of closing for the evening anyway. More than once I’ve transferred to another server only to transfer again within 15-20 minutes. I’m inclined to believe that it is because people who got pulled in to a transfer/merger were going to call it quits anyway and that just signaled the last call or perhaps they were a victim the transfer and lost something somehow.

    Maybe if they sacrifice Rank 5 they can sail to the center of the map where they will be transferred to another server, letting them hunt new targets, and giving the targets time to rally or respond. Heck, Rank 5 Reapers flag are a good way to get rep for the sheep turned wolf :)

    I could be totally wrong, and server transfer warnings might be more complex to put in than I think, and would I rather have new content or server warnings. Well duh content. But in the case of the Reapers, trust me when I saw a Rank5 Reaper on the server floating around will stop all new flags from appearing unless the other crew is very confident, but most of your flag’s are more PVE players so they evac to safer servers. I my self and more PVE than PVP, having had over well over 50 rank 5 Athena flags, and only had a Rank 5 Reaper flag once or twice. But since PVP in this game is 90% hunt 10% fight out side of the arena, I just focus on the PVE side enjoying the PVP when I encounter it. I’ve even earned the name the Black Op’s pirate from a number of friends for my ability to board other ships, wipe out the crew and then solo sink the ship before my ship can arrive. But that’s not to say I’ve not encountered a number of players that were better, stole my toys or prevented me from taking theirs. Only that I believe I understand the reaper’s roll in all this.

    My only wish as a black ops pirate is that I was able to get the Black Dog pack=) Oh well, I’ll make due with my green set 😊 Or my Pirate Op’s suite (No not tucking clothes, I’m a bit more mad dog than tuck dog)

    1. I would agree with you that server merges should has a warning with a timer instead of having happen with no warning. The server already has a warning system for maitence shutdowns so i'm not sure why this wouldn't apply to a server merge.

    2. Player controled server merges have already been talked about in great detail, but in short can't be done for serveal technical reasons as well as game breaking ones.

  • I would be happy if they just tagged any item a pirate puts down as part of their character, and move them over to the new server. That way the Quest item, stack of chests or Fort key you stashed in a bush so you could go fetch your ship won't vanish.
