PDP Wired XBOX one Controller not working, help!

Just got SOT for PC. I'm using a PDP Wired XBOX one Controller. When I load the game, I can navigate the 'start game' menu with the controller but immediately upon entering the actual game it just stops working. I really want to play this with a controller from the comfort of my couch on hot days. I've tried looking for driver updates for the controller, restarting PC and looking for ways to enable the gamepad in the SOT menu, to no avail. HELP! (if I don't get an answer quickly I'm just going to refund this one on Steam since it won't work with my hardware). Thanks!
