The PC experience

  • Hi!

Im not sure if this is the right please to talk about this but im really curious.
A little backstory, I've been on a break from this game since the monthly updates started, and now im back and playing with a friend thats relativly new to the game.
Its been great playing with all these new updates etc, but holy s*** man there are no players on pc it feels like. These past 5 days has been so dead its crazy.
Is this only my experience or is this a common thing for pc players now a days?

Also im getting server merged like once every 1-2 hours.

  • Similar to my experience. Crossplay opt-out has hit player numbers harder than some people like to admit - nothing we can do about it. Rare doesn't care about feedback and they are also unlikely to revert the decision. One might try to get them to finally publish the game on Steam, but I doubt that this is going to help with player numbers as the Windows Store is pre-installed and not that hard to use....

But yeah, wait for the usual suspects to tell you that everything is fine as long as there are 6 ships because ThAtS hOw ThE sErVeRs WoRk hurr durr

  • Time of Day
    Day of the Week.
These factors come into play when your joining a server.

I play both Pc and Console, and as of last night. Pc was populated with 2 Galleons and 1 sloop. It's a big sea, you wont always find players to tuck on there ships.

Do something important like carry three Reapers chest or wear the Reapers mark. They will come to you.

  • I'm having the opposite experience.. getting really spicy servers.. had a 4 Brig ship battle for over an hour yesterday was nuts 😅

  • @eddaah
You should post things about crossplay in the mega thread. But yeah, opt out was a bad idea

  • @burnbacon I've recently started rocking a Reapers Flag, helps abit.

  • @x5h3ar3rx That sounds amazing, I've been really missing the player interaction these couple of days.

  • @blazedrake100 Oh damn, you're right! thanks!

  • @eddaah Love it when everyone just throws down! Hope you get some spice soon.. I've been rocking noob skins on my ship and that seems to grab attention.. make my sails look out of place like I'm an easy target and reel them in with a false sense of security 🤣

  • @x5h3ar3rx That's a great idea actually, Im gonna try that!

  • @eddaah go for it! Guaranteed to attract some spice 👌

  • @eddaah I've had a mix bag. Yesterday my server had about 4-5 ships and we engaged in combat and allianced. The day before the server was much quieter. The one before that was another full server. I guess it just depends.

  • I think a lot of players are looking at the opt out and applying a certain correlation that doesn't exist. It's still early days and hard to judge the longer term impact... but, from my own experience so far, it has barely affected how busy the servers are on PC here.

  • @realstyli Interesting, I guess I've just been unlucky or played at the wrong times.

  • Personally i think rare should resolve these discussions by releasing the numbers say from a quarterly period in graph form.

At least everyone would know where they stand.

I hold rare accountable for so much of the heated discussion we see regarding these topics by keeping mostly silent upon crucial questions from their own forum communtiy.

As far as my own expeirences go?, i have found my recent 3 sessions to be slightly lackluster on the player interaction part with regards to other crews, but have seen a significant increase personally on the merging taking place.

Time will tell, but ultimatley rare should really speak up and be fully transparrent with the numbers.

I mean, I'm not discounting that you've had quiet servers at all, just that maybe it's not related to opt-out and it's too early to attribute it as having a major impact.

Before the update, and for a long time, servers have been a mixed bag. It can depend on time of day, but it could also be the types of players who are on the server - some might be more sneaky than others. New players have joined, so some might be doing Tall Tales and off in the Shores of Gold.

It could also be a factor that this update is less appealing for some and you can 100% the Legends of the Sea in a few hours.

  • @troubled-cells That would be quite great. Sad to here you've had the same experience as me though.

  • Haven't had any issues with finding other players but it makes sense since the PC playerbase is like 20-30% of the total playerbase.

  • I got friends saying its hit or miss.

I ask them if anyone attacks them but can't really go by that since no one really "attacked" us before. No reason for them to.

However I do have a friend in a region and he is saying its dead.

It could be just region based. Some area's have more players of a certain demographic then others.

Adults tend to play late at night or during the weekends and they usually have PC's. Kids, teens usually play when off from school or work so they were probably the ones supplementing the weekdays.

I'll give it a month or 2 before hammering down but Arena died almost instantly when players started to server hop to avoid PC players and then the nail on the coffin was when they fixed match making for xbox users. Now it takes me 20minutes of "searching the seas" to even get INTO an Arena lobby. With a full crew mind you.

sigh If they dev's realize its a mistake there is no way they are going to be able to undo the opt out. Their only option is to branch out the game through steam which I don't think Microsoft will want to do. Requires a TON of coding and extra work. Steam doesn't require windows 10, and if players joined off steam who don't have microsoft will mean they will need to get chat through discord or ingame or through some other chat service.

    Who knows honestly.

I'm a sucker for pirates like you. That said, I never let my guard down.

  • All fine to me until.
