I'm looking for an official response from Rare on this; I recently heard of wall-banging being a thing in this game. From my understanding it is shooting through walls/the mast, etc.
I'm not commenting one way or the other as to if it is good or bad, but I would like a official response from Rare on whether this is working as intended, is a bug, or an exploit? I searched the Forums and wasn't able to find anything.

I have just encountered a person in arena who stood underneath my deck while i was unaware that he snuck up on my ship whilst i was out digging for chests, as i sailed to cash in my sea dogs chests I got shot through the deck by a pirate who used a sniper. Immediately after i noticed it was through the deck/wall he said please dont tell rare im cheating, eventually he died and after the match he told me its not cheat but it's callled wall banging, but it looks as if a person is cheating. I have no idea if this will be considered as fair play it must be removed.
"Wall Banging" refers to being able to shoot people through walls or other objects directly, without any sort of server or ping issues causing it to only appear as though you were shot through a wall.
And yes, it is an exploit that the folks at Rare might be working on, I forget. You shouldn't be able to shoot someone through the hull of a ship.
This have to be gone it make no sense .. specially with the gun of pirate age, no way they can pass a 30 cm + thickness wood wall with only a round bullet and powder.
+It suck because it's great for hackers. Then we can get a clue where they are when they can easily wall bang use.
