what does #bemorepirate mean to you, what is the spirit of the game???

  • To me to #bemorepirate meant allways that we aproach SoT playfull, in no way is it neccessary to grind and "put effort" into it as we are all the same from scratch due to horizontal progression.
    SoT to me is always a game for players playing for fun mainly and in no way a game for tryhards, progamers and hardcores.
    But with several streamers and their aproach to SoT and their influence , the way they game it the spirit of the game changed over time. Arena also attracted more aggressive, more ruthless gamers who don't care that much for their fellow players and aproach it way more hardcore in a sense of "owning " others, make trashtalking more common and treat is as it is normal.
    Yeah it's maybe the standard for some competetive and more toxic communities and games, but i always wanted the spirit of Sea of Thieves something else and i also thought the majority of the players understand to #bemorepirate means exactly the opposite of that.
    What does it mean to you and what do you think about it?

    For the PC players here, do you think the atmosphere in the game will become more salty and harsh when the majority of xbox players opt out?
    How do you aproach it and how will you deal with it if this is the case?
    Or would you say that this is just normal for online gaming and you aren't that much affected by this, or are you maybe totally fine with it and think i'm a sensible carebear whining?

    Feel free to express yourself and share your thoughts about it.

    A well known and respected veteran of the community once said that the quality of your session is heavily based on the people you play with and who you meet in the Sea of Thieves as this game is also a social experience and maybe also a social experiment.
    What do you think about that? Does it matter to you?
    Do you care for your fellow players or is this nothing to worry about?

    Thank you for your answers in advance
    and good winds to you

    I'm more than happy to let players play their own game and seldom ever choose to start an attack on another, unless Rare make me do it for an event time limited cosmetic I might want.
    Appart from that, I just enjoy the game and whatever adventure I find myself on.

  • I never really liked that saying to be honest. It always came off to me as be more ruthless and bloodthirsty. But I’ve always considered myself as a passive new word explorer then a pirate.

  • @bugaboo-bill said in what does #bemorepirate mean to you, what is the spirit of the game???:

    To me, it means embracing all aspects of the game but in respect to the Pirate Code. It's all about the adventures and stories to tell - in winning and in losing.

    For the PC players here, do you think the atmosphere in the game will become more salty and harsh when the majority of xbox players opt out?

    I don't believe the majority will opt out, and they'd need over 75% of Xbox One players to do so to have a majority of the playerbase.

    I'm actually fairly optimistic that the saltiness will in fact fall as more players will be communicating in the game (less ships full of Party Chat pirates). While there are a few toxic players in in-game chat, the vast majority of players are more considerate when they hear voices in this game.

    Do you care for your fellow players or is this nothing you waste a though of. If so why is that so?

    I care in so far as a I don't go out of my way to ruin other players' fun. If they cross my path, and especially if they fire first or make aggressive moves, I will attack/defend. But my play style is more PvE-based and I'd rather have fun with other players I meet and have a good time.

    so the exact opposite of what i thought it means?
    that's really interesting if i'm honest.

  • @bugaboo-bill maybe it’s just me being pessimistic, but I feel like most use the saying as an excuse to be a scourge of the Sea, which is there right to do so.

  • A lot have change since the beginning, mostly the amount of loot, but also the greed that players have.
    But mainly Alliance, think it's the biggest game changer, both for good guy, but also trolls an aggressiv pirates.
    Before alliance, there was no reason for another ship to come close unless it was for battle. specially compared to now

    I guess some use the #bemorepirate as an exuse to attack player
    the same with the Title. Sea of Thieves
    I just feel sad for people that cant set them self over a title or a #

    I kinda understand why others turn to the dark side, an become shoot first ask question later.
    As one who never shoot first, an even forgive "missclick" when some cannon balls flying over my ship, but one hit!!! an I will sink you.

    I love to be trash talked to, an love to do it myself, the problem is when a crew becomes really hostile/treating or racist.
    that I have tried 2 times, but they where forced to change server, because then I have a target, something to do.
    Mainly why I dont think you should shoot at everything that moves, It could be a bored PL with nothing better to do than chase you down.

    Some will pride them self, by only getting to pl from stolen treasure, Do they play the game to it's fullest, I know that it's kinda boring doing those quest, if X marks the spot is the only focus, but I have always seen the voyage as a push out in the world an a direction to follow.

    I mostly like the game for the social interaction, just today a sloop followed me, ally up, gave them a couple of Villanous skull an got a blue gem in return, we go do a fort together, they need loot, I need to kill the duthess, so win win.
    he's buddy left after we sold, an I join his sloop, an help him the last bit to PL.
    told him what to do, buying all of the title to lvl 50, an go talk to the stranger, an all in all, just a good day with special moments, with some interaction, some action form other attacking ship (1 sloop, brig an galleon.)

    Im the most Friendly pirate in the sea of thieves, until someone gives me a reason not to be.

    Much love

  • @Bugaboo-Bill You say the majority of Xbox players will opt out, but I don't think that's necessarily going to be true - I think the actual majority will be completely oblivious to the addition when it becomes available, and as such will continue on as normal. Of course, if Rare puts a big notification on the main menu screen for every pirate to see, I'm fairly certain that they will effectively be shooting themselves in the foot.

    Rare, please don't do that. 😅

    I prefer pirates that:

    1. follow the Xbox Live Code of Conduct and Terms of Use;
    2. follow SoT's Pirate Code;
    3. that keep an open mind;
    4. that remain cautiously optimistic;
    5. that are willing to receive and accept advice (e.g., learn from others);
    6. that will make an attempt at communication where warranted;
    7. that excel in ship manuevers and combat tactics, and that have a keen awareness;
    8. that is a team-player;
    9. that has plenty of time on their hands; and
    10. that are committed to finishing the journey.

    Why do I look for these qualities in other pirates? Because those are my qualities. Naturally, that's hard to find though, so I often find myself soloing as a result. 🙄

    Just the other day I was trying to dig up gifts to give to others at the Reaper's Hideout while using the Reaper's Mark upon arrival. Unfortunately, 1 of the forts I had to visit was an active 1, and was also 1 with a rival crew. I used my rowboat to sneak over with the hope that I could dig up the gifts without being spotted by the other crew...

    I nearly succeeded. I successfully dug up 2 of the 3 gifts, but was spotted by a lady pirate mid-dig on the final gift. I said, "don't mind me, I'm just digging up..."

    I respawned on my boat and sailed back to the fort determined to get my gifts back. Knowing that there would be no way to not get spotted, I took the initiative and called out to them upon approach. "I'm just here to get my gifts and rowboat back!"

    They boarded and repaired my holes from the fort's cannons and repositioned it away from the towers.

    I collected my gifts, was invited to their Xbox Live party, recruited a 5th member of their party to my own crew, helped them finish the fort, got more gifts as a result, created an alliance, and after taking a cut of the fort's profits was able to exchange gifts at the Reaper's Hideout not only with them, but with a 3rd-party rowboat crew that showed up with 2 chests full of generous gifts as well.

    A good and very lucrative day despite initial impressions.

    That's what I 😍 about SoT. It's never too easy or too hard, can be equal parts entertaining and frustrating, serene yet dangerous, relaxing or intense and rought with peril, rewarding and punishing, and so on...

    There's just so much to do, and to look forward to, and sometimes there are just things that occur that you never even expected at all... 😏

    You asked what the spirit of the game is, @Bugaboo-Bill? I think it's to have a jolly good time going on an adventure that will become worth remembering.

    yeah maybe, my crew is mied, this won't change for sure.
    hope you are right ad hope if not it anyway will not harm the game and the community.
    I think this separation is not good for the community and also not for the forums. I think people will much more have different experiences and talk different about the game because of that.
    But i'm maybe wrong. What i mean is that we will have more missunderstandings based on different experiences. some time ago i realized that for US times the people often make other eperiences than in EU times for example, i have no evidence, but i cannot help i think this is the case.
    Or Oceanic who often say the servers are more empty than EU or US. Know what i want to say?
    Its of course just slight differencies, but we know some debates are really heated and these small differencies support misunterstanings.
    ah all exxageration, but yeah just thoughts ;)

  • @bugaboo-bill Added more thoughts of my own by editing my post above - give it another look over. 😉

  • @galactic-geek

    I successfully dug up 2 of the 3 gifts, but was spotted by a lady pirate mid-dig on the final gift. I said, "don't mind me, I'm just digging up..."

    XD

    like your addition, yeah thats the spirit of the game, i recently told my crew to be more gentle sometimes and optimistic about others :)
    We saw a Brigantine, checked if they had booty and normaly they would have wanted to sink them anyway, not because we are that bloodthirsty, but to make sure they wont attack us - yeah i know its a little bit weird, but most of us went thotugh hard lessons and always predict the bad about others - so i said if they dont have something lets not sink them for nothing, better let them do whatever they are heading for and maybe we check them again later and they have booty.
    So we did.
    5 minutes later, they come back, attacked us and we sunk them :P

    I/ we recently had some short, but friendly encounters with solo sloopers.
    I'm actually in the mood to gift stuff to others, not only gifts, but also chests, skulls... except gems, as i'm 45 Hunters and i dont fish, i'm a pirate not a fischerman :P

    Good to know that the old spirit isn't gone. I am really unsure about this, but as i said, my own crew is often aggresive and SoS (sink on sight ^^) because of many "bad" experiences.
    Last Galleone we sunk at the FotD was really salty about it :-/
    And the fight was fun and intense and they were really good, no need to call us names on the ferry :(

    edit:

    & # 9 7 6 0 ;

    didn't know - really cool ☠

  • To me, #bemorepirate means.....

    • More death
    • More fighting
    • Even more death
    • Make new friends!
    • Did I mention death?
  • What does "Be more pirate" mean to me?
    It means always keeping wind in your sails.
    It means guiding greenhorns and leading them on exciting adventures.
    It means enjoying the company of seasoned veterans as you torch enemies and the challenges the game has to offer.
    It means introducing new mates to old mates and watching them form bonds.
    It means lifelong friends and lifelong foes!
    It means winning the battles with dignity and on that rare occasion losing humbly.
    Most of all it means leaving those you sail with a yearning in their hearts to sail with you again!
    Peace and may your shovels strike gold!

  • sink ships and collect salt.

  • #bemorepirate is exactly what it means. Be a pirate. Plunder, steal, and kill. Welcome to the chaos. The thing is we arent supposed to be all friendly in a pirate game. Pirates did 1 of 3 things commonly.

    1. Board and threaten the crew then rob them blind.
    2. Sink on sight and take what was left.
    3. Sneak stuff from under peoples noses and avoid getting caught.

    While 1 was the most common the other 2 did happen. We should embrace that and not be so butt-hurt when people ambush you at an outpost or sink you. Its how the game should be played. Not alliance servers and this self entitled mentality everyone seems to have. You fight for what you got so everything has a story behind it worth telling.

  • I always thought the saying was wrong. After 2 years, I still don't see a pirate.
    I see more Sinbad the sailor. We fight skeletons, each other, and monsters of the seas. Many only think of pirates because of the movies based on the ride at Disney. All pirates are sailors, but not all sailors were pirates.

    To be more Sinbad is to go have an adventure where the wind will take you.

  • @d-jaguar

    That's what these 'pirates' are like. Not everyone in the Sea of Thieves is a thief, either, though a good chunk of them are.

  • @treefittymonsta sagte in what does #bemorepirate mean to you, what is the spirit of the game???:

    sink ships and collect salt.

    That sounds as if it fun to you to get others upset. To be a provocateur.
    Those who rip of a butterflys wings and laugh.
    I think this is a little bit limited and questionable, but i may be wrong.

    @zherron-vorse
    I agree on that as long as we stay a little empathic and dont SoS and kill merciless all the time, but also have other more kind days on the Sea and parlay etc...
    But honestly it's exactly what i do since start.

    @d-jaguar
    Yeah. Just replied to my own thread and posted about sindbads seventh journey XD
    I like it.
    https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/106443/tall-tale-ideas-suggestions/16

    @ultmateragnarok
    To me all the pur PvX aproaches ate limited.
    Sea of Thieves needs pve and pvp, the journey you do, the encounters you have, the adventure you experience, the tales you create and tell by yourself.
    It may be one day this and another day that, but not only this or that all days.
    And i think some people are just oneyed and shortminded.
    But ok, you don't meet them all the time so fine. And toxicity comes from pure PvE who cannot get over it loosing and pure PvP for beeing jerks for whatever reason .

  • @bugaboo-bill

    Yes, the pure PvE or pure PvP approaches are not the intended ones that Rare encourages, but they are still valid to try. If someone wants to avoid every ship they see, then they can, and if they don't like doing any PvE content, then they don't have to. They won't get the full experience, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed or considered proper players. Toxicity is another thing entirely, it shouldn't be tolerated and does come from most sections of the game given the right situations and times.

  • @ultmateragnarok
    You are right!!!

  • Be more pirate to me is having the freedom to play as you see fit.
    Being chased and escape.
    Chasing and sinking them.
    Sailing peacefully alone and with crew.
    Theres tons to do and its fun.

  • Be more pirate. if I hear or myself say "Parley" I expect the deed to be respected and honored.

    You know...guidelines tend to help set some limits and create better experience for all pirates. Not just ruthless killers who use the game exploits to show dominance over a solo sloop against 4 man galleon.

  • @bugaboo-bill Honestly, from being a day 1 player, active in the forums and still have a huge love and passion for this game.. this question suprised myslef a little.. It made me really think and the conclusion I came up with was.. #bemorepirate means absolutely nothing to me, I don't like the saying at all!

    The spirit of the game to me is one about growth and where we are all going.. we all have one destination in this game Pirate Legend/Pirate Lord but every single person who has set sailed on their journey has a completely different story to tell unique to them.. Some shy from players, some seek and hunt players.. some love to share and help.. some like to go it alone and be the underdog!.. at the end of the day there is no right or wrong way to play.. we are all arriving at the same destination at the end, where we can all share a grog and share the unique beautiful journey we all have taken! 🍻

  • For me, "be more pirate" means use the tools and the environment of Sea of Thieves in a more creative and crazy way.

    For exemple, boarding a ship on a megalodon with a keg on it, set fire to a ship burning a banana in their pan, throw vomit to your oponent to blind him, try to shoot yourself in a volcano, try to travel on an island using harpoon roaboat, make a skelleton fort using snakes...

    But unfortunately, theses kind of moves aren't encouraged by the design of the game.
    Just because it mostly doesn't gives you loot.
    I think a lot of people are focused on grinding, but it's not fun at all.
    Doing 50 times the same quest is borring.
    I didn't even mention the players that get PL in two weeks of intense tryhard...

    In my opinion, commendation should be oriented in "doing original and crazy thing" rather than "grind all a day doing the same thing"

  • For me the pirate fantasy is about the freedom of deciding for yourself who you are and upholding your own code. In the end it is always the question how will you respond to the sails out on the seas? The type of pirate you want to be is not to be determined at a menu screen, but to be determined within the game and it is all up to you. The game provides all the tools required to play as you please and the freedom to do so.

    This is what #BeMorePirate is about in my view; to not require the world to change for you, but to look at ones self to improve and to use the tools within the world to be the free roaming pirate that you want to be and allow others to do the same.

    If you want to be a passive pirate that seeks treasure and avoid others, go for it.
    If you want to be a pirate that seeks social engagements, go for it.
    If you want to be a ruthless bloodthirsty pirate, go for it.
    If you want to switch it up every time you play or based on the situation, go for it.

    Be the type of pirate that you enjoy being. Set out on the seas, be the pirate you want to be and leave the judgement of the way other people choose to play the game in a shared world out of it. That for me the freedom to enforce your own code is the pirate way!

  • Invade and burn ships, kill everyone and pillage.

  • i do not know what " Be more pirate " means to be honest ...i've been a Pirate from day one and don't know how to put my gearbox into the "be more Pirate " gear ( * Yep, all be careful , old fruitcake has a "better" day , well ,he calls it better ...i would rather call it...ALAAAARM, incoming nag...You have been warned)…

    i like to compare Sea of Thieves with an Old Movie called the Crimson Pirate from 1952 with Mr Burt Lancaster and his sidekick Nick Cravat. They were both former Ciscus artist and their fights were ...clean...And spiced with tons of fun that was so typical for those days… i often reenacted them with my Playmobil set ( * dada poepie pang pang...Foolish Everchild…).

    The fact was that ,allthough great costumes and ships , Pirates and Navy soldiers got killed without one splatter of blood…

    i think that Rare has taken that idea over as they made their Sea , realistic like life , except the plastic soup...luckely. And their ships and buildings all have something " funny" about them… Exactly the same can be said about the Cartoony Figures that are spewed out from a very very underestimated mechanic called Infinite Pirate Generator...

    " What are you doing ,old nag ,? Are you bringing the history of sot or something? Fool" . Well...take that last word back, i'm the Champion of Fools and i'm proud of that ( * Jezus wept ...Go to war with that plonker at yer side...).

    You see , Rare could have chosen for rrealistic Graphics in ships , buildings and Characters ...The Sea is already realistic and that proves to me that they could do all the above mentioned stuff as well...But why haven't they done that? Why didn't they made a game based on the realism from ,let's say , Black Flag?...

    i've seen the series ,completely ,and liked it ...because i'm a grow up now ( * Let me check this ...hmm ..a carcass that is detoriated and compareble with a 75 year old man , but a brain and a mentality of a 5 year old...hmm...nope you can't be called a grown up...Freak will do for now...hehehehe) but i found them...raw ...Probably realistic or at least a bit realistic how people treated eachother but still ...raw and hard...

    Would Rare be able to bring that " Joyfull" that we have now in this game ,when they would have used realistic Graphics ? i really doubt it...

    Why do we play? The Younger Pirates who are considered children in the real world play because it's fun ,it's big , when you walk around a Galleon you get the feel that you run on a footballfield...The Sea attract young and old alike like a Vacuum cleaner... They can replay their " Pirates of the Carribean " feels with their Hero Captain Sparrow and other characters …

    The older ones , like me , well, just admit , that a bit of our childhood comes back while we play...And certainly ,in the later hours ,when all my crew mates have searched rest in their hammock ,i get a special " feeling"...i've always admired Tibetan Monks who are calm , gentle and are seeming to be in a higher mindstate than others ...i bought the mantra's , i have sang them , i have bought the orange robe and ringkled the bells but i never met the Nirvana state of mind...

    Well sometimes , i will simply dream away , very peacefully while being mesmerized by the sound of the Sea that clutches againts the bow , of Seagulls that sing their screetching songs toward all who like to hear it, i dream away by the colourfull skies while being rocked like a little baby because of that tranquil and subtile music of Mr Beanland...That is also the time that i get ambushed the most and that i feel a bit disgruntled , no not because of the ambush and the coming defeat but to be ripped away out of my dreamstate…

    But that wasn't the question was it ? ( * What you realized that now ???? you have just placed a whole lot of Pirates in a coma with yer nagging and now he is finally going to answer….By the Seagods , they should put prizes on heads of Morons like you ...Well...Only one price then since there is only one big fool here...you!)…

    Many games , i like to play Gears 5 or Dead by daylight too , seem to be silent as hell...don't know if these games have disabled speech because most games are a verbal slaughterfest as "being the best of the best" principle these game use , bring out a lot of verbal garbage out ,ignited by adrenaline or a bit too much of testosterone...But these games are now deadsilent...and i find that a bit sad...No Worries ,i have SOT where communication but even more important , creating a Great Atmosphere ,is pretty important...

    Be more Pirate means for me , creating an Atmosphere where people like to be in , yes , sometimes i fail as the more intelligent Pirates think i'm a dumbo ( * They don't "think" it , they know it)… i will also keep in mind that a Pirate is an unwanted character in the rest of the world where Law , Order and Suppression is the King...

    We might fight eachother ,but we are still in the same little ship if....the big Sea Nations would ever find our little Uprising region…
    Therefore it is important for me that not only Friends but also the " Foes" can have a laugh while they do their chenninganian deeds…
    My eyes are peeled to the max in order to find " New Pirate" sails...Not to sink them, but to ask if they need a bit help...

    As an experienced Pirate , and i do have a good cannon aim ( * Arrogant peacock fool), i could sink a New Pirate but what would i cause ? Dissapointment...To make sure that a New Pirate becomes an Experienced Pirate ,you need to welcome them, guide them while they don't even feel they are schooled and to offer them a first Adventure that is etched into their memories …

    if i can accomplish that then whatever the week throws at me , i will be able to absorb…

    Be more Pirate means for me Be More Human...Fight fair to the ones who know how to fight . Lay the cuttlass down for those who are New , Embrace them as Brothers and Sisters of the Coast , teach them tips and tricks so they form a force to be reckoned with but also press on their Hearts that Hate , Anger and Frustration are best kept at the door of the Gamesroom...

    And the last thing ,i desperately try to do , but still fail at it : i try to let People understand that there is no shame in a loss...A loss isn't a humiliation ,it's an oppertunity to become a better Pirate. If People would sit down for five minutes and openly discuss ,without pointing blaming fingers , where it went wrong , then Crews could grow out of this better than they were before…

    This Game is the best Co-Op game that will be made in ten Years because if you can't detect and inspire all those different individuals then you will be sunk many ,many times… Open yer Heart and Arms for others , learn from eachother and don't see the game through the eyes of a minehorse...Sea Of Thieves is more than just Levelling, Gold and Plundering...It's about Adventures, Childhood dreams who come through , and above all Brother and SisterHood…

    Oops i'm sorry ...i have to go..."Mommy!!!"
    " What? George?"
    " Can i have a basket, please?"
    " What for?, George"
    " For Grabbing Easter Eggs"
    " Sniff...Poor silly son of mine ...Easter eggs in Januari? i think it's time for yer pills , a double dose should be fine..."
    " NOOOOO, not my pills….Gluck AAARRGH , they taste like sulphur"....
