Holy smokes the new player experience sucks

    Got the Xbox game pass for windows a while back to play the Outer Worlds. Today I remembered that sea of thieves was included and wanted to try it out. I don't have friends to play with and I didn't want to be a burden for a random team cuz I'm new, so I just started with the smallest ship to go solo. When I got to my ship, another ship came by and started blowing it up, so I left the game immediately because I knew what was going to happen. I didn't even know where my weapons were or how to drive the ship.

    I started a new game, figured out how to drive the ship, where weapons were etc. and got the first tutorial chest and brought it back to and outpost. A guy shot himself from a cannon from a ship I apparently didn't see and started attacking me while I was looking for the gold hoarder's tent, and took the chest (which probably took me an hour or so). THEN I started respawning on that guy's ship and getting killed again and again until I managed to dive to the ocean and they shot me.

    Terrible experience so far, probably uninstalling.

    @inventor147 Try the new Maiden Voyage. It acts as a much better tutorial than the automatic one. You don't have to worry about players and it provides basically all the essentials you should know.

    Hi! I'm sorry you had a bad experience but this game can be super fun once you understand how to play and gather some friends. I have a crew and we have all played since release and are more than happy to help new players.

    If you decide to give the game another chance feel free to add me or message me if you'd like. I'd be glad to get a crew together and show you the ropes and help you with tips and tricks we have learned. You would not be a burden to is at all.

    Sadly, the reality as a brand new player to this game is your going to suffer lots before you learn.
    It really is a harsh learning curve, but one many of us have been through. Watch some tutorials on YouTube, expect to be killed lots to begin with. You don't really lose anything in this game.
    The new player tutorial might help a while and give you the safety of an empty world to figure out the very basics of this game before you venture out into the main adventure mode.

    A good way to "start" is just go to you ship, vote for a voyage, grab a full load of res. an shuttle the ship, take a mermaid to the new ship.
    an start from there.

    When people see a ship on an outpost, most get paranoid about losing there haul of treasure, an dont wanna sail to another outpost.
    So when they see you ship, they only have 1-3 options.

    Talk to you(alliance maybe)
    Sink/kill you.
    Commandeer your ship an sail it away.

    I stream sometimes, to kinda show how to solo sloop, but what I can do, is not something that can always be replicated.
    Because almost every play session is different.
    I have had players shoot at me, an I just said: NOOOO, where they put there gun away like a trained dog.
    Other times got killed on the spot :P

    I call the "fakez" on your post buddy. Sorry but you just sound too unconvincing, and rather look more like them PvE server activists on a ninja account...

    You state that you don't know how to sail the ship or where your weapons are (which indicates you haven't even seen any videos of this game and thus know absolutely nothing about it) but in the same time you know people can cannon themselves? Just doesn't make sense...

    On top of that, the chances that you get insta-gibbed 2 times in a row directly after you login are as slim as 1:1000 (maybe even more??), because the game works in such a way, that it spawns new ships on specific distance from others, and can never spawn you too close to somebody else. In your case, this means that 2 times in a row there was a ship heading exactly in your direction, situated exactly next to the virtual boarder of your safe-spawn distance. Nah, not likely at all...

    And if I am wrong, then I highly advise you to seek aid from other, more experienced pirates. Don't be afraid to ask random people to help, or warn them you're new and inexperienced. You will be surprised how welcoming people from this community can be. If you're playing on EU and mostly in the evenings, feel free to add me, I will play for 1 full night session with you, and will teach you everything you need to know about the game.

    @inventor147 The only progression in the game is learning how to play.

    Try to use the Looking For Groups, mention that you are new and I think you would be suprised with how quickly a crew will take you under their wing.

    There are no hints in the game, therefore everything you learn is from trial and error. The good news is that you lose nothing when you die, please do not focus on the loot. Loot is so easy to come by it is just background noise to the rest of the game which is all about experiences.

    I do hope you stick around, there are a few names on here that felt the same way as you but stick with it and it will be worth it. You will make some friends, maybe some enemies (names I look out for on the Sea, names that get NO quarter) and a lot of memories.

    Welcome to the seas. The seas are a dangerous place and you decided to actually voyage alone on them, which is recommended for more experienced sailors.

    I get that you dont want to be a burden, but you are thrown into the deep end when you hit the seas. There are many pirates that will mentor new players to get to know the basics. Else there are guides, videos and other ways to help out with starting out like joining a community. My advice is to actually get a crew, this game is not recommended to play alone.

    Also, you should not place to many stakes in losing treasure. First learn to manage yourself on the seas and the treasure will follow. Everyone has lost their haul, from a single chest to a stock pile it is just part of being a pirate.

    The game places everyone on equal footing, which means no special treatment and a harsh learning curve. Sail, enjoy, sink and learn from the experience, that is the best way to improve. You are new, you lost, to be a pirate you need some grit, resilience and willpower. Nobody stated that being a pirate would be an easy task.

    Also they added the Maiden Voyage to help learn the basics of sailing and voyaging. The main advice I have once you hit the open waters is to keep one eye on the horizon and see the sails while you still have the time to decide how you want to respond.

    What if Rare adds a leveling system depending on the time you've spent on the seas ?
    So you would better identify new players and have an adapted behavior towards them.

    1 hour to get a chest?

    You didn't respawn on his ship, he was spawn camping you on your ship while you slowly were filling up with water is my guess.

    That's the thing about the game, you have to keep an eye on your surroundings at all times, otherwise stuff like that might occur.

    Soloing as a first experience, except the new maiden voyage tutorial, (down right in the menu before you choose a ship) is a very bad idea.
    Ask for someone to teach you the ropes, find a crew or find crewmembers and found your own crew. This game has a lot to learn, people like me know the map very well and can tell you what island is this far away just from the shape of of it an my memories where i was, what direction i'm looking etc.
    I know where i can find amunition on islands and much more, because i sail for nearly 2 years in this environment.
    And believe me, i did sunk my ship without any hassle or other players numerous times, because i didnt hear i had a hole from parking, i sunk solo in the Devils Roar before any nerfs etc...
    I searched red crosses and chests for over an hour on Wanderers, what i need 45seconds for today, because i know the island, i visited it for 1000 times. I guess half of the playerbase didnt even know there is a hidden Alchemist Laboratorium that was introduced while the cursed cannonball event, Wanda's Alchemie Laboratorium.
    There are hidden caves and more.
    What i want to say is, this game and your experience improves heavily with likeminded crewmembers and experience playing the game knowing the environment, the world, the stories/ lore of the Sea of Thieves.
    I can imagine you had a bad experience, but you made a mistake you cannot know.
    Loggen in solo with zero experience.

    Keep goingx this game is a gem, but you need a crew and some thick skin and aproach it like a stubborn Pirate who never gives up.
    If you make it to Legend and know all the things you can learn, you will have one of the best online mp games released in decades.

    @iTz-Majman yes it was probably was more like 45-50 mins, but I had to restart because I was being attacked. Like I said, I'm new.

    @AGlasgowThing I'm a casual gamer. I don't play fortnite or cod because they're super intense and competitive.

    @inventor147 - Thank you so much for your comment, please con't take some of the others' blunt answers to heart. They unfortunately are having to deal with an influx of people trying to change the game because they don't get it.

    I would also change your reply to Dislex-fx I don't want you to get into trouble.

    And please please look for groups, do not worry about people treating differently cause you are new, but I would definitely communicate that you are a new player so they don't get frustrated thinking you know what you are doing while you are learning.

    welcome to sea of thieves it's a pirate game and while your at it try maiden voyage and learn to counter others and basically it's also sort of a learning game.

    It's called "The Maiden Voyage" and is accessed from the main menu (before selecting Adventure or Arena). I believe it is on the lower right hand corner of the screen.

    @inventor147 Ahoy! If you are needing help getting started, or if you just need people to show you the ropes, feel free to come aboard with me crew. You wont be a burden, and we'll help you learn how to sail these seas, as long as you are trying to contribute.

    Also, a lot of the mateys here have suggested the maiden voyage. That's a great way to dip your toe in the water, but I'm assuming you have already done it as it's mandatory for new pirates after the update.

"I didn't even know where my weapons were or how to drive the ship"), he bypassed this somehow otherwise he would know how to drive the ship since you need to do that to get through the maiden voyage tutorial. He must have played before the maiden voyage was available which no longer made it required.

    I gotta address this post specifically.

    I wasn't insta-gibbed. In my first experience, I talked to the mysterious stranger, looked for the gold hoarder's tent, got the tutorial voyage, and was exploring my ship when the other ship started attacking. So, plenty of time for another person to arrive. In my second attempt, I succeeded in going and getting the chest for the tutorial voyage, THEN I was attacked. I'm just assuming the guy cannoned himself at me because I heard a boom and then he appeared next to me and started attacking.

    I watched Zylbrad play this game a bit a while back when it first came out. I saw all the fun stuff you could do with cannons, but it wasn't like a tutorial or anything. I still had to learn what buttons to press to equip weapons and where to get food, wood, etc.

    I think that may have been my fault. I had to restart the game because the sound wasn't playing through my bluetooth headphones, so I tried switching to different headphones, which worked. Restarting the game probably booted me out of the tutorial for some reason.

    It’s the same experience since the game released. Figure it out! It’s about as simple as it gets.

    Grab stuff, out stuff in your boat. Kill stuff. Sell stuff.

    I mean it’s the most simple thing released in 10 years!!!

    Well, I would recommend doing the tutorial part. It's pretty straight forward and will get you accustomed to the basics before you're thrown into the world with everyone else. You can also earn a good chunk of starter money & doubloons if you can access the vault in the tutorial.

    The biggest thing to remember is try not to get too attached to your loot. If you're worried about losing it, constantly scan the horizon and don't leave your ship unattended for too long. Cash in at the outposts as often as possible to minimize risk. The game is a lot more fun if you don't take getting sunk too seriously, since most times whatever you lose will be easily replaced on the next mission.

    No, because new player has poor loot and would sink in 2 sec, so it's not worth camping.

    @inventor147 Honestly, the player experience sucks in general. This is one of the few games I would not recommend to anyone (it is one of the two negative Steam Reviews I've ever left).
