Split stolen loot? here me out!

  • Okay, so say you and your friends are doing quest aaand another ship comes along and sinks ya and kill you all/steals your loot. When they go to turn it in you still get a portion of the loot. You worked hard to get it but they worked hard to steal it. Id say when they turned anything in you killed for (kraken loot, megalodon loot, ghost ships ect..) you would get 75% of the stolen profit and they would get 25% of the stolen profit or 50/50. how ever it worked out, I wouldn't be as salty knowing if they turn MY stuff in that I would still get something for the HOURS spent to get it. Thoughts, questions, comments, concerns?

  • In my opinion, I don't think that is a good idea. It's okay to work hard for loot. Sometimes you win some. Sometimes you lose some.

  • @dislex-fx well Nah, I started my stream/game today and not even 10 seconds into the game a group jacked our ship to troll. later on in the game we kept getting people trying to take our stuff. its extremely annoying to fend off people to lose everything in the end, I want something for that hard work and hate how people don't have the patients to quest for themselves and would rather just steal it. This game takes HOURS out of people, its not worth it for you to get nothing for the time you've spent. like I said I wouldn't care if it was split some way, id want anything. heck id take rep!would be cool if the NPC would know if it was stolen loot and would give them less for them being a thief. there's a heck of a lot of potential in this game.

    1. You started the game today. As you play more and learn more, you're going to get better. When you get better, you will see that it's not near as hard as it may seem right now. You can't get your stuff stolen if you make sure no one can come near you. ALWAYS, ALWAYS watch out for other ships. You can see ships far off. Stay away from them. As well, most will probably be trying to stay away from you too.

    2. I know it can feel bad to lose loot you worked hours on. That's why #1 is important. Stay away from other ships.

    3. It's a game where being a thief is fun. "Thieves" is in the title. No players should be punished by being payed less for stealing loot. Those that steal loot have to work to steal it too. It's a different type of work. Do you plan to never ever take someone's loot? I mean, if not, okay. Play how you like to play. Be a good pirate. Be a dirty pirate. Be both. We all have the options.

    4. If you're really worried about getting money for other's loot, or vice versa, you can just join an alliance with the alliance flag. ...but, you will have to get close to other ships and take the risk of them not wanting to join or them turning on you. That's all up to you.

Keep playing and learning and you will see that it's not hard to keep your loot 99% of the time. You can also check out the Find a Crew section of the forum to find groups to play with. There are so many people that are around to help. I love helping new players learn.

  • Sorry, but no. Its not your loot until you turn it in. I agree'd with past suggestions of maybe getting a tiny bit of rep, or having collected chests/skulls/animals it counted toward the commendations, but still getting a slice out of a stolen pie I don't agree with.

It is funny though when people betray alliances but forget to leave them and still give the people they betrayed half the cut.

  • @a-l-i-e-n-5959 Its Sea of Thieves not SEA OF KIDS get over it, you want to be rewarded for losing in a battle?
Is that how we want to encourage players to thrive to victory, by being lazy? im sorry but no.
this is Sea of Thieves, players would lose and learn from their mistakes they dont need to get a candy for trying.

  • When we get robbed on the street, we do not get a part of what the thieves took, they take everything and that's it.

  • I thought this was a troll post, didn't think it was actually real...

Tbh I see a point to this, it takes a player about 1-10 minutes to steal up to three hour's work and while it isn't actually griefing given it is in the spirit of the game, it -feels- like getting griefed. Its like in games where you build stuff and someone can walk around and tear down weeks of your work in less than thirty minutes, it sucks sometimes. I don't even remember if I've had a sizable amount of treasure taken from me or not but I know earlier on I'd have been pretty miffed if I did, and I KNOW I have undone hours of other player's work in minutes.

And to all this I can say, they should just give a rep and gold bonus (based on level of voyage) when completing a voyage. Not a big bonus, not one you can reach pirate legend in any reasonable amount of time with, (10 gold, 25 gold, 50 gold, 75 gold, 100 gold, 150 gold, 200 gold, 250 gold, 500 gold, 750 gold, 1,000 gold and a proportional amount of rep) per reputation tier. just a high five for actually spending those hours in the form of something more meaningful than the current "Do it 299 more times and we'll give you some experience even though it won't be relevant anymore." Just something that players can't take from you when you dig up that last chest. The rising increments would give new more vulnerable players the extra drive needed to reach higher.

And before anyone says 1,000 is too high, that's a captain's chest which at level 50 in a reputation tier you'll be finding often enough anyway. Sitting at 700k atm myself.

  • It's a no from me, you want it then you protect it.

  • @adrian-cartmale i don't mind the whole getting a little rep and or some gold for digging up chest or completing a voyage. As long as its very minimal. But the notion of getting more when the crew that stole the loot turns in is just ridiculous. No trophy for losing. Plain and simple.

  • If you can't protect your loot then you don't deserve to have it, its that simple.

  • @enticed-malice I mean, its not like the aggressor crews are risking anything for the stolen loot. The risk/reward is totally in favor of the attackers, the best a defender can hope for after playing for however long is to gain absolutely nothing for fending off the people risking nothing and keep what they've already earned.

Its unlikely to change, but its always been that the people having pvp done to them are shouldering all of the risk.

  • @a-l-i-e-n-5959

I remember some time ago there was a huge discussion over allowing pirates to gain at least some rep and/or gold when they dug up the treasure chest/killed the skeletons, it's an idea that definitely had some traction just after release.

it's the nature of the beast.

  • @katttruewalker It would be ok by me if the people having pvp done to them stood something to gain (apart from just hanging on to what they've earned) from fending off the people attacking them who are very likely risking nothing at all.

  • @orbitalbinkie

I remember very early on when the devs were talking about loss and the resulting emotions and how they designed Sea of Thieves so that 'loss' was hopefully less painful than perhaps losing everything a la Rust and Dayz.

I wonder if, when the incidence of pvp encounters is rising, that those who fall victim reach a point where the loss, even though small, is too great for the effort involved in acquiring loot and the emotions felt are similarly fairly devastating. It's why balance in the game is so important, I think.

Yes I'm agreeing more with the notion that there should be some form of compensation for that much work given the real reward always goes to the galleon with team chat and a crew that actually listens when a skilled captain says "Raise the sails" or "Turn to Starboard side" or "Fix that hole." no matter how competent a sloop or brig is. I completely disagree that there should be percentage splitting of the loot, that the sunk ship should actually get any substantial gain, or that the winner should get anything less than 100 percent. Even the alliance system knows the seller deserves the full reward. I agree its ridiculous, that's why I suggested an alternative.

They're risking their cannonballs...Precious...Precious... Cannonballs. But you're right, I will always hold adamantly that PVP is the advantageous form of gameplay because if in the span of one hour you hit two or three ships that did a whole voyage each, you saved yourself up to five hours. This isn't even uncommon either. I'm a pirate legend and a quick skirmish against a smaller ship can yield as much reward as the average 2 hour Athena voyage. It takes minutes to roll up on a ship that just spent half an hour doing a skullfort, a sloop can even have someone dive at a galleon at a skullfort, wait in their crow's nest, and drop a couple lit kegs on their deck when they start hauling treasure on board.

  • I disagree with this. You are going to get robbed. It happens in this game. The best thing you can do is stay away from other ships. Turn in loot every time you pass an outpost. A time will come when all that loot and gold really doesn't mean much anymore - it's about the experiences you have along the way. I can remember in my early sailing days cursing at the TV and getting salty over someone stealing my boat full of loot. I now look back on it thinking "Why'd I get so mad over a few seafarer's chests?" It's all part of the game. Embrace it, and learn from it. Don't make the same mistakes again.

  • There are a few problems with the way the game is set up that causes issues with the reward system.

    1. You can fresh spawn into a server and sink a ship that has spent a long amount of time doing a voyage for immediate gains because you get all their loot (gold + rep gain). If you lose, you don't get any set back and often times can just try again.

    2. Gold after a point is pretty much useless, so most people are just looking for reputation gain.

    3. Reputation gain is tied to items being handed in. If you change reputation gain to tie into voyage completion, you run into problems where players can no longer do partial runs for some progress (particularly if they are high level and only have a short amount of time to play) and the Athena quest breaks down completely due to issue #2; all loot will be abandoned, including the Legend Chest because gold is useless and reputation would be awarded once the Legend Chest is shoveled and at that point Athena rep is all players care about.

I think moving Reputation to Voyage completion would cause more problems than it would solve, so the answer needs to be to figure out a way to give a penalty to ships - perhaps something tied to having an increased penalty if your ship is empty or some kind of loot on board value based scale. Even then I'm not sure you could come up with something that couldn't be gamed or would be too penalizing for brand new players who sink because they don't know what they're doing.

Unless there is some kind of solution that gives a penalty to people who lose when they have no loot on board their ship there is no point in giving gold more value because it will make this particular problem worse.

I hope we never get rep. or commendations or gold or anything from our stolen loot. I know it's a bit of a taboo to mention, but, so many of us Pirate Legends are getting left out and left behind. We worked hard to get PL and it seems like with every update that comes out, it's easier for newer players to get to PL. Heck, even known streamers that JUST started playing SoT are already PL. Being PL doesn't mean anything now. It's almost just handed out. There are always rumors Rare are trying to come up with ideas to make pls cool thing again, but I fear it's really too late. ...unless they do something big where only old school PLs get the changes and newer ones so have to do more work and put in more time. ...which a lot of people still hate. Again, I know this is a taboo subject, but I'm just sharing my opinion. My opinion was formed through beta, launch and present day play. Well before I was ever PL.

  • @dislex-fx To be fair, the only thing pirate legend meant was that you spent the time to grind through the levels. It never meant you completed some craze feat of skill or that you were one of the best pirates around and even the first PL was boosted. Pirate Legend wasn't a fully implemented feature when the game released as it was 99% just the same voyages repackaged.

Even though they've since added commendations, there is still a lot they can do to expand on what a Pirate Legend is and what that brings to the gameplay experience.

  • @d3adst1ck
For me "Pirate Legend" is an over-glorified title. Congratulations on your ability to read a map, collect chickens, and kill zerg skeletons. I have met way too many Pirate Legends who have zero clue how to sail, fight, or even make some basic judgment calls.

Met this PL a long while ago, decided to sail a session with them. It was rough sailing. Basic boat operation was a battle with this individual. We saw a fort and decided to do it. Cleared it pretty smoothly and was loading up the load. Low and behold a Galleon is on the horizon. Now PL was getting panicky with a "we need to go" attitude. Yet they were far out like a couple minutes and we still had loot to load.

Its very clear not all PL are the same.

Game makers want people to play. You used to have to put in a ton of time to make it to Legend. Sure, I agree with you there, but it's still something we chased. Now it's practically handed out with a bit of time and so much less work. Much like this post. The thread starter wants more handouts. The game seems to be getting easier and easier. I don't want the game to be too hard for a younger player, but I don't think any of us should really be getting "participation trophies" for logging in from time to time. Don't get me wrong. I respect all the players and play styles. If you're logging in for the first time ever or if you've played since alpha, I see you the same. We are a community. I just want anyone getting to PL to have to work and put in the time. It's not like the changes came during and right after beta. Becoming PL keeps getting easier and easier well after game launch. I don't bring this stuff up often, as it seems like jealousy and what-not. I loved grinding away and putting in the hours to hit PL. Sure, as you stated, old school PLs "spent the time". That's okay. Getting Prestige on Black Ops games is the same. You have to put in the time. It's not about you being amazing at the game. Black Ops never kept making it easier and easier to level up. Heck, I still play Black Ops 2 and there are SO many player that are still not the highest Prestige possible. That game came out 2012. Think about that. The game came out in 2012 and people are still working to get to the highest level. Looking at SoT again, back before it started getting easier and easier to hit PL, being PL actually made you proud of all your work and time.

  • to those that say the pvp ship has nothing to lose,
not all ships that chase u have nothing to lose, i found a while back when servers were less populated it wasn't worth going for just pvp because i'd sail for half an hour not finding anyone or i'd find someone chase them for an hour just to find out they only had tea, so usually i will do voyages and go for ships if they are close by, often i will have far more loot on board than the ship im chasing they just never bother to look or fight back.
my best suggestion would be to go and attack other ships, go to skull forts were theres a high chance you'll run into other ships and be prepared to lose it, you might earn nothing for a week but you should learn enough to protect your loot in future.

  • @a-l-i-e-n-5959 I think a better solution is to give out gold in other ways. Maybe have skeletons drop gold purses you can store on the ship or.collect just by interacting with it. That way you’ll get st least some reward for playing the game but the big reward is still from turning in the loot.

  • No, I'm sorry, but you sunk, you lost your loot and you're done.

  • Sea of thieves can have so many meanings doesn’t strictly mean it’s pvp

  • @bundui so play 3 hours and log out with no game progress at all. Great way to hang on to your player base.

  • @mobedda How can you play for 3 hours and get no game progress? Don't you hand in your loot as you adventure, I stop at almost every outpost I pass and hand in whatever I am currently carrying

Also why is progress so important, personally I play games for fun and the only metric I judge a play session on is whether I enjoyed myself. If progress is all you care about then you are likely to become very bored once you have finished PL and all you are doing is grinding gold and commendations.

  • @salvasian-au You spend all day at work and your salary is taken from you that day. But it's ok, you enjoyed work right? Now this IRL example is going to be tore apart but the feeling of loss translates all the same. No one likes to feel cheated.

  • @a-l-i-e-n-5959
You lost the loot so you dont deserve it anymore

  • this made me laugh thank you

    Irony?

  • @a-l-i-e-n-5959 let me be straight up with you.

    1. just... no
    2. its your own fault for getting jacked at sea. why are you not keeping an eye out for ships? why are you leaving loot in easy to get to areas? why are you allowing people to even get close to your ship?
    3. why is it taking you hours to get loot? 1 skull fort with 4 people should never take more than an hour. 1 person scouting ships while giving you back up with the cannons while the other 3 pull skellies to the shore or main fort door. should take 25-45 minutes. on a sloop with 2 people an hour.
