Well... the chests float on their own so....... it wouldn't make much sense for them to suddenly lose this buoyancy when someone's holding them in water.
Science........ ;)

Works for me. I actually would like a rowboat. Make a rowboat without cargo as fast as a mate swimming without cargo and make a mate swim slower with cargo than the rowboat with cargo. Swimming with a barrel would make a mate swim faster than a rowboat with cargo instead and a rowboat with a chest slower than a mate without one instead. It's about the pace anyway, right? So have the rowboat have pros and cons at that and it fits perfectly into the game.
Edit:
Not too slow though. The chests may look sturdy and heavy, but they aren't. I bet they don't actually have anything inside. The GH just gives you gold for the chest itself. LOL
We shouldn't be able to swim with chests, but it's ok to swim with a full load of cannonballs, bananas and planks?
While I get the idea of realism in the game, I don't think SoT was geared for that aspect. It's geared to those who just want to jump into the life of a swashbuckling scoundrel out for treasure, fame and reputation on the high seas.....and that sits just fine with me, mateys..........AAAAAARGH!
Really good idea there mate. This would be a cool idea on a 4 man crew becuase it includes the co op element again. Like if you have one person driving the rowboat then it goes slow but if you have 2 people then it goes faster. You could also get your mate to get the chest onto the rowboat while you row, row, row your boat(Sorry about that). I think sloops should not get this option which then make sloops at a slight disadvantage which is then balanced.
@a-sinner-7ds l***o, what?
Do try to convince me that you know what you're talking about.
I've explained why, all without complaining. Have you bothered to elaborate on anything?
