The funny thing is rare never even stated if the pets will be solely locked behind a paywall either. Maybe everyone should just chill out and wait? Either way I just want the game to last and if that means throwing some money their way then fine. I mean look at WoW, you buy the base game, an expansion almost yearly, a cash shop you can only buy with money and a monthly fee... I see sea of thieves as the best form of micro transactions.

  • @slipkick01 Give it up matey. Game companies have convinced the community that this is normal and the only way they can make ends meat. It'll never go away, and will just get worse. It's as if folk forget, or are just to young, that there were actually games, once upon a time, that had absolutely no MT. How those poor poor game developers like Blizzard manage to keep their doors open is beyond me.

  • @starquest First time I can agree with you.
We should chill because nothing has been confirmed yet.

But I am staying here because I need to help those who are misguided and are for pay to win in this game.

  • @blackbeard-lufy Its funny how people all want to jump to conclusion before the game is fully released. People need to wait until the release then give honest constructive feedback to help improve the game for the long term.

  • @blackbeard-lufy

Yes those games long ago did not have free updates or server farms that cost millions... The artwork alone is harder to make. What do you think is easier to make a 480p texture or a 4k texture? pixels or complex geometry? games have come a long way and thus require more money... Someone has to pay for it right?

  • @blackbeard-lufy I'll stay here for a bit
The only thing that may stop me is the remaining 15% battery on my phone and the fact I have to make pancakes for pancake Tuesday.

  • @starquest Diablo 2 didn't have free updates or server farms? How about a modern example, Ark.

  • @canadianmuscle3 It is important to effect game changing features before they will be introduced.

  • @ant-heuser-kush Read what I have said before you make false statements.
I've already stated that this was wrong many times.

  • @slipkick01 Its to close to launch and that is a major change. I would bet anything that you will have some to earn in game as well. But the rare limited time ones will be pay for. This is how the fund a game that dosnt charge for season pass or dlc.

  • I would even prefere a subscription instead of having an item shop, item shops are always stupid. You want the developers to develope the best possible game, not to bother with an item shop.

Item shops always get to much developer attention. And somehow people are more likely to pay 10$ for a new hat, instead of paying 10$ for new content.

  • @canadianmuscle3 I'm actually laughing because nobody seems to be reading my stuff.

Look at what Riot has done with their free to play game and its many updates along with skins in League of Legends.
That is a game this is to look up to.

  • @blackbeard-lufy Diablo 2 did not have the scale at which this game does, no 4k textures, sprite based 2D game, servers cost more today than what they did then and the free updates to diablo 2 werent that large plus diablo 2 had an expansion to breathe life into it. Bug fixes and patches arent the same as large content updates. The server tech used in diablo was not dynamically holding a 3D world and had small instanced space for a few people... it is not the same. The cost to run a toaster is not the same as a jet plane or space shuttle launch is it?

  • @starquest Think of League of Legends.

Think of the amount of servers, updates, the graphics, the people who are employed, the skins... Everything. It all has a much greater cost than this game and yet the skins are obtainable without paying.

  • @ant-heuser-kush Is the point of a game not to have fun?
And since the skins are basically the only progression having some skins or pets which are real money only then that makes it "Pay to have the maximum amount of fun" if you don't like how "pay to win sounds".

  • @slipkick01 This game is nothing like them and is something never tired before. Mircosoft is taking a big gamble on it and so is Rare and they have to pay for free DLC and updates somehow.

People are reading and responding. Every one knows its not a pay to win game. Cosmetics stuff as announced so many times in videos from dev and interviews will not give an edge over one player to the next.

So you are simple jumping off the Gallon to soon with out all the facts yet. Just wait until full release then pass your points.

  • @starquest White knight all you want, bud. I'm still going to play and enjoy the game, but I'm not going to sit here and let game companies continue to walk all over my wallet without complaining. Like I said previously I would rather pay a monthly sub to ensure full access to the game rather than have a bunch of MT champions running around with cool stuff on because they're frivolous with their money. Cool stuff in games use to mean something. You could look at someone in WoW and be legit impressed with how awesome they looked. That's not true with MT games.

  • To anyone complaining about MT's, just take a step back and look at the fact that instead of paid DLC Rare decided to add things through FREE updates. The cosmetic MT's are completely optional, if you dont want to buy them you dont have to. Its that simple.

  • @slipkick01 you get financial benefits from being a game with 27 million daily players. Lots and lots of people to buy the skins.

It is ridiculous to expect that business model to work on a brand new IP. Almost as ridiculous as claiming something you literally cannot get through the games progression is part of the games progression.

  • @slipkick01

Ok league of legends does it yet i guarantee creating the content for league of legends is not the same. For instance LOL has what 1 small map that you do the same thing in each time? The models in LOL are also low poly models with low res textures compared to SOT, last time I checked LOL wasnt providing free content other than skins. it has servers but they dont need to calculate dynamic water and weather. The demand on SoT is a lot and will cost more. The same reason my GPU costs more than an xbox one x, it runs nicer graphics. You must pay for a lag free pretty environment.

  • @ant-heuser-kush Sea of Thieves is a shared world adventure game that has no straight progression.

Cosmetics are progression, so if you had to look up the definition of "Pay to Win" on the internet and didn't have the general knowledge to adapt to the type of game we are dealing with then you simply don't understand the topic and I don't want you to say the same repetitive, irrelevant things you have been mentioning with the last hour and a half.

  • @ant-heuser-kush said in Microstransactions:

You haven't convinced me that buying a pet is pay to win. Your only argument is that someone will have more fun than you.

Maybe you should read some posts further below again, as Slipkick and I explained this already.

Here's another approach: SoT is all about fun, and fun only. As it seems now, you cannot achieve more than "fun" in this game, which you have by showing around what you have. Until here, I think we are on the same level.

But then, why should I not be able to grind for the ultimate gaming experience, which is more fun? Why should you be allowed to have more access to the gaming experience and thus fun when you spend more money than I? If Pay2Fun sounds stupid, as this is what we all do when spending money for games, I guess you could call this a Pay2Win mechanic if there is nothing else to be achieved in SoT.

  • @iiv3n0mzz-uk To anyone who thinks that Rare is the best company in the world because they are giving free updates.
League of Legends does the same thing but more often.
Has skins which are obtainable for free and doesn't have a €70 price bracket.

  • @blackbeard-lufy I honestly wouldn't want to pay a monthly fee for all my family to play. I think that is worse than an optional pet. If I had to pay for wow for everyone in my family it would cost me $90 a month and i would need to buy expansions. I would rather pay 4 bucks for a pet when I want. You talk of wallet trampling yet you want to get trampled over a monthly fee? I'm not a white knight just realistic lol. I mean I know whats worse on my wallet...

  • @slipkick01 There can always be 2 best companies in the world... There's only one person winning, with free updates/DLC... the consumer.

  • @ant-heuser-kush........ There are no advantages in Sea of Thieves......

  • @musicmee Riot isn't winning??

  • @starquest No I want a consistent experience. I want a full game.

  • @ant-heuser-kush The fact is that fun is how you win.

@slipkick01 Give it up matey. Game companies have convinced the community that this is normal and the only way they can make ends meat. It'll never go away, and will just get worse. It's as if folk forget, or are just to young, that there were actually games, once upon a time, that had absolutely no MT. I agree with some of that, being that I'm 35 and grew up during a time when games were just games. If they didn't work or they weren't fun, tough luck. However I think it's important to note that players these days demand much more from their games. This drives up cost. An example below:

On average a AAA game developer spends roughly 12 million a year per 100-ish employees. Rare is a 'legendary' company, that employs 200-ish employees. I'm sure their pay is a bit higher, so we'll say 15 million per year per 100, which equates to 30 million a year.

Now add that to the fact that this was announced in 2015. 3 years at 30 million a year (for just employees) equates to 90 million dollars. Now factor in what it might cost for utilities (electric, water). Let's say it costs 400/mo for electric and 150/mo for water (and that's probably low). That equates to 6,600/year - 19,800/3 years. So now we're up to $90,019,800. Now let's say the developer doesn't actually own the building, but leases instead. Depending on the size, we're looking at a substantial amount of money. Let's say the building lease costs $3,500/month (and that's low considering the size of Rare HQ). That's 42,000/year - 126,000/3 years.

Now we're at 90,145,800. Assuming marketing goes well, let's say you can expect 5 million pre-orders. 5 million copies at $60 a piece is 300 million. Now taking that profit and subtracting costs, we're at 209,854,200. Let's assume Microsoft takes a 15% cut of the profits. That's 31,478,130. So now you're left with a total of 178,376,070. This only only title requires servers, though, so you'll need to pay for those....and so on and so forth.

TL:DR Everything costs money. At the end of the day the day that $60 game is only $25-$30 for the developer. The goal is to net as high a profit as possible, but that will only sustain the game for 1-3 years. What happens to a game that is online-only that will need to be further developed and adjusted? How is that paid for once pre-orders are done and your influx of new players ceases? Microtransactions.

  • @ant-heuser-kush You are seriously not getting the point here.
I don't mean pay to win in an advantage way. As in the goal of the game is to have fun.

  • My phone is dying and I need to make pancakes so I will continue this discussion later.
Hopefully some of you will get the point by then.

  • @blackbeard-lufy

Your getting more than a full game, your getting a service and for less money. If you buy every pet you will most likely pay less than if you had to pay a sub over the life of the game. I prefer supporting over the price of the game when I want rather than monthly. But if you dont like it then the game is optional as well. I just hope more people play because I want the game to last and do well as I like playing it.

  • @starquest I'll support them by buying the game (like I already have). That use to be enough. You enjoy your pets.

  • @slipkick01 of course LoL does it more often! thats because SoT hasnt even been released yet. If you dont like the price tag you can play it through the game pass or wait for it to drop in price. Also lets face it, this is a bigger game than LoL so there is that too.
