  • @conal-cuan The problem with online abuse laws and death threats is that if you tried to enforce these laws every time it happened or take it on as a case by case basis you'd #1 Put every teenage boy ever to have an internet connection in to juvi, and #2 There's far too many cases. Basically every place on the internet where people can post an opinion has said someone should die or get r***d(usually jokingly, not that that's an excuse).

  • To be honest i did run into a crew that wanted to r**e us and make us their sex slaves, but we were all male, just sayin.

There's a few interviews I've seen on people talking with developers and doing something as simple as adding more inventory space for characters in-game turns out to eat up WAY more rescources then you might think. Collecting all that data or even making it possible for them to do that in-game would be a huge undertaking. That being said I still think the best option is just to find people you enjoy playing with and mute the bad ones. Also there should be a way to mute people individually in the beta I don't think you could. There will most likely be an option for this on release.

Data is cheap these days, you'd be surprised.
I'd like to hear from Rare on what they are deciding and what they have the resources for.

Data isn't cheap if your collecting millions of people's data especially in recorded format where the files would be larger. Also you would have to develop software that did this in game. Trust me its not cheap. Plus I don't want any person recording what I'm saying without my knowing. Granted I'm not threatening to r**e people but that's a debate for politics not a game.

  • @kendoroland True, I understand that. The links and pasted examples are to show that, in some cases this occurrence is indeed illegal. Whether it's actionable and feasibly prosecutable is another matter which I cannot comment on as I am not a Lawyer, nor do I represent RARE's opinion.

  • @ant-heuser-kush Than let's ban the person who brought this on forum. Since he obviously broke the rule and brought this filthy language here.

    Silly isn't it?

That's what majority of you do here right now.

@cmm-solo Why are you all threaten by jokes is beyond me. I'm so glad I am a slav. At least here people are still normal.

I am not going to bring Nationality into this discussion as well as potential online sexual harassment.

Yes I am aware that people make jokes and yes I am aware that immature, insensitive and absent minded children and man children make inappropriate jokes all of the time but that does not make it any more acceptable. Especially when the joke involves the sentence 'Lets r**e them.'
What is so difficult to understand?

Oh and by the way, I am in a part of Europe which is home to one of the MOST controversial comedians alive in our time and he makes jokes about r**e, the difference is, he is a professional comedian, it is all about the context in which a joke is made and saying 'lets r**e them' is not what I would consider actual comedy, its just trolling in a really shady gross way.

  • @kendoroland I'm male and I've been on the internet for 26 years and I've never told anyone that they should die or that I want to r**e them. Weird that that would be a normalized standard.

  • @cmm-solo Not gonna repeat myself gazillion times.

  • @crimsonwhispers my main recommendation is to simply mute in game comms and use TS or Discord if it is a presisting issue interrupting your enjoyment.

Fair enough. Rare will do w.e they want but it's highly unlikely that they would take/suggest taking legal action against anyone. It would have to be an extreme case.

  • @ant-heuser-kush Yeah that's why people here suck at jokes and sarcasm. (Mod Edited) but certain person might get offended again.

Well your a better man then pretty much anyone I've ever met that has emotions. I also don't think its a normalized standard its just that little kids find things that are taboo funny. Considering that rules are applied to them on a daily basis much more heavily then an adult, its only natural that they would want to break them. On the internet that manifests as behaving inappropriately. This doesn't mean however that those kids are like that IRL. They could be perfectly normal children that are pleasant to be around. Anonymity does strange things to people. I'm 27 btw not that it matters much, age is just a state of mind.

  • @ant-heuser-kush Yeah that's why people here suck at jokes and sarcasm.

  • Well, I made myself curious.
    I grabbed a 3:30 audio clip, converted it into a 64 kbps mp3 file.
    The resulting file was 2MB.
2MB times 5 million people is 10 TB.
My computer has 6. I think Rare/Microsoft can manage.
    Assuming the implementation is feasible.

  • @kendoroland For RARE to take it up, yes. I thinking more along the lines of the harassed person starting the process, not RARE. Which, granted, would be nigh impossible dealing with cross-state or international law. However, I do not underestimate the desire (greed) of a lawyer to take up a challenging case to make a name for themselves and potential lawsuit commission, not only against the aggressor but potentially filing against RARE itself. This would affect all of us.
All of this is conjecture to a point, but I would believe that it would behoove RARE to have their legal team look into potential ramifications of this.

I don't get the whole sausage fest thing since to me thats a pretty tame yet serious joke. The r**e joke thing on the other hand however is disgusting. Whether said by someone male or female it doesn't matter you should be booted off from any game if you even go so far as to use such an unfunny thing. If i play and ever hear anyone make r**e jokes even on my own crew theyre getting a boot to their booty and a report to microsoft or whoever will get reports. Im all for mature humor but r**e is going too far.

I agree, Some things are not disgusting, they are also just not actually funny. Intelligent humour is..... well its very rare.

  • @ant-heuser-kush Do whatever, I don't really care about you.

  • @hrknen Yes. But the way your computer operates and they way the game operates are not the same. I've taken programming classes and while something simple may seem easy to do, it takes time and money. Usually a lot of it. I'm not saying Microsoft couldn't do this. I'm sure they have code already that records files sent from one user to anther via xbox live and other applications they control. Rare however wouldn't pay for code like this to be placed into their game. Also your not taking into consideration its not a 3:30 second clip they would need to store. They would need the entire play session to be recorded or to implement a software that records each players game individually that was only to then be deleted upon not receiving a report claim. Which is not something that any developer would waste money on.

They wont. This issue is as old as the internet. They will simply ban people who are deemed unfit to play the game and suggest using the mute function.

There's nothing wrong with being cheeky. You can be cheeky and keep it clean and clever.

I don't think it even always has to be all that clean but there is a definitive line that should not be crossed and its all a bit too toxic to discuss any further buddy, I'm signing out of this discussion, I'm here to talk about piratey things not get involved in a controversy lol.

  • @crimsonwhispers Im sure there will be a way to report players and provide a reason.

  • Wow...Couple people in here just don't get it...not saying names, but r**e in any context is NOT funny. Absolutely amazing that some of you are either really that clueless, or simply that desperate to troll others.

  • @kendoroland
You are severely overestimating the difficulty of implementing such a system. That may have been the case 20 years ago, there is no reason it would be technically unfeasible to do so.
Even if for some reason Rare was saving files 100x bigger than the one I created, that would still be cheap data storage.
Running audio logs are old technology. It isn't complicated.
Every computer that ships with an Nvidia GPU can have full audio/video recording on their computer at all times. Imperceptibly.
Also, nearly everything you do on any communications network is recorded. You agreed to the ToS.

It has been, it can be done.
Also, it's just an example of 1 idea Rare could implement that was brainstormed in about 30 seconds.
I even proved the data footprint would be miniscule.
Audio can easily be saved at 32kbps or less. I'd expect a professional setup to record at a rate less than 1MB for 3mins per person.

Wow...Couple people in here just don't get it...not saying names, but r**e in any context is NOT funny. Absolutely amazing that some of you are either really that clueless, or simply that desperate to troll others.

This is actually untrue. There's plenty of comedians who have made r**e jokes and have thriving careers. It really just depends on the person saying it and the delivery. Your also assuming that people all have the same sense of humor which they do not. Now let me say this REAL r**e is not funny and anyone who does should be castrated. But, there are 100% times when a r**e joke has been funny. That is the point of humor, to make light of situations that are usually more serious. If you do any research on comedy you'll find this point out quite quickly.

  • Yes, please report them through Xbox! I usually just have Xbox or Shadowplay record the incident and then take the necessary steps to report them. Double tap Xbox button and record last 5 minutes. Then do the same for Shadowplay which is for PC Nvidia GPU users.

These player will eventually get a notice and more than likely get disciplined by Microsoft. Also, post in the support section on this website with their Gamer-tags.

You should also take measures to mute other crews besides your own if this does become a frequent issue. Obviously it is not your fault and communication with other crew is usually fun.

Fair enough. Was it "funny" and comedic in this case? Or was it griefing?

  • @touchdown1504 The answer depends heavily on who your asking the question. I'm assuming its a mix?

  • @kendoroland I am asking you

  • @touchdown1504 Oh, well as I already posted earlier its something that would have made me laugh when I was younger. I would have probably thought well if she cant handle it then its her problem. Now that I'm older I would say no. I no longer have the desire to "troll"(wasn't called trolling when I was younger) anyone.

  • @kendoroland It wasn't called trolling when I was younger either. Truthfully, the internet didn't exist in its current form when I was younger.

The bottom line is we are living in a time of "anything goes" and common decency is thrown out the window. Would these two young punks have walked up to her on the street and said the same thing? Doubtful. Anonymity via the internet gives people a false sense of power, or invincibility. Lets be honest, these kids would get their teeth knocked down their throats for saying that to a woman in public. For some crazy reason, that I don't know, people really think this is OK. Personal insecurities? Showing off to online buddies? Who knows? Maybe I just grew up in a different time where we all showed each other respect, until one party showed they did not deserve our respect. Maybe I am just old and behind the times, I still stand by what I said, R**e in any context is NEVER funny.

  • According to the Privacy Statement found at the bottom of this very page, we all have given Microsoft broad authority to record audio from any service they operate. They may also use any data they collect in dispute resolution.
According to the Code of Conduct we have all agreed not to engage in the activities described in this thread.
    Specifically:

Don’t harm or harass. For example, don't:
    Engage in self-harm
Encourage violence against people or animals
Scream at, intimidate, or bully others
Violate another person's privacy (e.g., share someone’s personal information like home address)
Fail to protect your account, devices, and personal information (e.g., lend your credentials, post your private information publicly, fail to supervise your devices)

So they already have permission and I have already demonstrated the footprint should be relatively small. It's also possible it is already occurring.

Don't take things too seriously, thousands of people have Xbox live, it would be impossible to go on a witch hunt for them all.

We don't want to hunt them ALL down....just need to report and publicly shame anyone who sexually harasses other players.

  • @andlav said in Inappropriate players:

It is indeed inappropriate, but at least they acted like how pirates are :p

A question though, is it truly necessary to start using resources into policing speech? i mean, is anyone truly hurt by it? youre on your own side of the screen what hurts you is what you let hurt you. I believe there is a mute button, isnt it? correct me if im wrong but cant you choose if you wanna hear just team mates, none or everyone?

My point is its better to grow a thicker skin, then you grow as a person too and can handle the world better, the world is not a nice place and being able to ignore things that have simply been said does make your life easier. I grew up with the phrase "sticks and stones" so when people are inappropriate towards me (online or offline) without a good reason then I simply dont care.
Once you start policing speech then it only goes one way from there, more speech policing, its a trend almost everywhere, blizzard is a perfect example on this, they are now seeking people on other media sites to check what they are saying there so they can ban them in overwatch. can you imagine the amount of resources they have to use?
Id rather Rare use their resources to continue improving the game itself than to start speech policing, dont like what someone else says then you got a mute button, a more targeted mute button towards individuals/teams would be appreciated as some have mics that take up everything in the room or some is playing music or other sounds though a virtual mic.

This is my opinion, real life crime is a problem, words are not. One you have no choice whether youre hurt by it or not, the other is fully preventable and up to yourself if youre hurt by it or not

Such ignorance, words have true and accepted meaning.

  • @drayman86 yes, words have meaning, thats how we communicate, but words only have as much power that you give them. If you dont empower a word then it will never offend you.
