Scheduled Maintenance times?

  • Hi all,

    I'm curious as to how maintenance is scheduled.

    Here is Australia, SoT maintenance has predominantly been smack-bang in the peak playing time.
    So maintenance day = no SoT day.

    So my question is;
    Is it always scheduled at the same time?
    Any chance it could be moved around to share it around?

    Cheers

  • It is indeed always scheduled at the same time. Their offices are in the UK and they have to manually apply and confirm these updates are working, so they need to do them during their normal working hours. That would be 10am when they take the servers down and begin applying and confirming the update is ready to go live again.

    I know it can be frustrating, I play a game who has their headquarters in California and it also means I usually can't play that day due to timezones. But I understand it is only fair to let them work during their normal work hours, even if it would be nice if they mixed it up sometimes.

  • yes weekly update every Thursday at 10am

  • @smuntface Yes, always 10am UTC (their local time).

    It makes sense that they do it around that time for 2 reasons:

    1. It's a pretty much in the beginning of their workday (it still gives them a little preperation time before starting), so if they encounter problems they can still solve it during that working day. If they did it in the end of their working day you have the risk they can't solve a problem during that working day and the servers would have to be dawn the entire time untill the next working day. That is way more harmfull.

    2. 10am UTC is where the least amount of players are online, since it's during working hours in Europe (almost everybody is at work or school) and in the middle of the night in North-America (1am-4am), so most there are asleep. EU and NA/USA are just the biggest playerbases for SoT (and most other games too), so it makes sense that they pick times around those regions. I get it that it is tough luck for people in Australia, but that time just hurts the least players.
