Saying Goodbye to The Arena

  • @lemortasavage Ahoy matey!

Can I still play The Arena and earn Sea Dog cosmetics/Titles/Commendations before March 10th?

Yes, you can still play The Arena, move up through the ranks, earn Commendations and unlock the ability to purchase cosmetics and Titles until we close this game mode on March 10th.

  • Wish I was in the same boat, but nope 49 1/4th doesn't matter, had I k ow literally hours ago I could have gotten the cosmetics. I hope this gets re-thought. I am a Day 1 Pirate bur never been in a hurry to find things that weren't labeled as "limited time". Guess from now on we are expected to grind grind grind... please Rare give everyone time to earn The Good Boy. That is my favorite set in Arena.
@killarh1no said in Saying Goodbye to The Arena:

So glad I hit level 50 last month, look forward to receiving the ship sets but more for the rare The Good Boy ship set. GGs Rare and Sea Of Thieves was a great addition that sadly we will see the end of.

  • that’s sad but I understand

  • @major-rawne I want to second this.

I feel like it is a little dismissive of the players to say that we should have done the grind since arena was introduced. People have real life responsibilities that may have kept them from engaging with content that was never supported enough to encourage engagement. The community sentiment was that the mode has been mostly dead for years. Que times were excessive. LFG forums and discords were typically completely devoid of anyone who wanted to do arena. Playing with randoms was almost assuredly a gamble you would lose. Not all of us have friends who play. Some of us may have two friends that don't feel like manning a Gally with a random. The more recent redesign made it substantially more difficult to earn may of the commendations, with shorter matches and fewer chests.

I understand the shifting of resources away from arena support, but removing the commendations and cosmetics removes a substantial goal from the game. The Sea Dog commendations and cosmetics are one of the few skill based cosmetics to work toward. These commendations really should be shifted into adventure.

  • @meroviel

"Can I retroactively earn any of the ship cosmetics listed above as part of The Arena’s closure?

We have made the decision to give out these ship cosmetics as a reward for participation in The Arena up to now, so you will no longer be able to head into The Arena and earn them. They are to show our gratitude to everyone who has supported and enjoyed The Arena up to this point."

This is garbage. heres a previously unannounced thing you could earn by doing thing X you have until 10 minutes ago to do the thing

Messed up. id have this set if you never ruined arena by taking away the maps.

  • @endershade96 my Piratesona is married to DeMarco, and if either they die (which scares me when they mentioned murder mystery), or leave, Orca will be heartbroken.

April to September is not a lengthy period of time??? Thats six months! Do you even hear yourself??? lol

Considering it wasn't until Ashen treasures came about in the Seabound Soul update of 2.0.9 (December 2019) that doubloons actually became commonplace to grind for, yes. This was after they became one a month (eventually one per quarter or 4 per year)

The letters of recommendation were originally difficult to choose because 30 doubloons was alot as stated and you have to choose buying those with the event doubloons earned or the time limited event cosmetics.

Listen, we get it. You got 50 and feel special, you haven't a dog in the fight. However, to some of us, this honestly is a bit of a betrayal. I guarantee they would have a lot less upset if they went the other way with it as most wouldn't think any different. No one who is level 35-40 or lower is gonna hit 50 in 5 weeks, not without winning every single match considering the ~30 minute lobby MM time on average between matches. If they did, they definitely earned them and were dedicated to Arena like the rest.

One day you may understand if they keep on this trend and discontinue a commendation or cosmetic you were working towards as you enjoyed all aspects of the game equally. My hope is that you feel that and let it sink in as you were only one or two sessions from unlocking it.

  • @jester1027
We can back and forth this debate all day, but it doesn't change anything.
But you bring up a point about who the most
    “dedicated players were”

Maybe they should just give the Good boy set to those of us who Reached Legendary Sea Dog and earned the 240 wins. Thats a sure fire way to show who the most Dedicated players were. And everyone who got to at least level el 5 gets the rest of the sets. But keep The Good boy exclusive to Legendary Sea Dogs.

Bet the community would be real happy about that decision. (They wouldnt they would just find another thing to complain about, oh the servers were slow, people were teaming...etc)

  • @seadog-orca :(

  • WHAT ON EARTH IS THE "midnigh prowl"?!

  • @thundercharg This was a rare spawn in Arena like the Good boy Set... that a few lucky pirates were able to spot on the seas!

  • I'm going to miss the arena very much. I have countless hours and wins lol. It'll be awesome to get all the cosmetics, especially the good boy. I bet I have close to 600 wins and have had the privilege of playing on the good boy like 5 times. I remember telling myself 240 wins and I'm out but you end up getting hooked! At least we still have a couple months! Here's to the crew! Everyone enjoy a tall tankard of grog in remembering all of the great times the arena has brought us!

  • I have to express my total disappointment. I spent a lot of hours training for competitive and i'm still here only for the NAL and SoC. Sometimes i enjoy adventure mode and tall tales but this take only few hours in a week. Goodbye Arena and goodbye SoT.

  • @musicmee any chance I could get in on that discord ;)

  • As I promised, dropping some feedback in here.

Well, as you can probably see, not everyone is happy. I don't think anyone is content with the removal. But something about arena had to be done. Spawncamping, teaming, playing the rude cannon spam meta, all of that was notorious (no pun intended). Arena in current state just wasn't working. Better/ more prepared players would dominate lobbies, TDMs are sometimes just free wins/kills, as a galleon you could just spam mid deck shots for points and on sloop you could just rush the chest and win almost every time.

Arena would either have to be fixed (read: rewritten from scratch) or be removed. Rare went with the latter to move people working on Arena to Adventure to deliver us some new great content. I regret not playing enough arena when I had the chance, I'll try to do some grinds, help some of my friends, get carried by others, and cherish the time I've got left.

However, I think banishing all of the arena cosmetics to the shadow realm, and making them unavailable for newer/less arena playing players is a bit radical. I think that only the Victorious Sea Dog blunderbuss should be removed from shops. Legendary weapons should be moved to more legendary things, like completion of the new PL content you've teased :eyes:. However, the Sea Dogs as a faction should stay with us, not making them a giant, time limited thing that we were basically locked out without a warning. If someone wasn't doing arena, maybe because it was just not fun for newer players, or people who just like Adventure more, there's absolutely NO way they're getting 100% on sea dogs in a month. Weapon/Cannon kill commendations should be moved to adventure rather than removing them entirely. Wins/Top 3's, games played could be moved to sinks while flying a new Sea Dog emissary flag (Credit: DeplorableBeast).

PvP was, and should always be a big part of the seas, so don't take away the faction completely related to it. Arena despite its cons, was loved by many, and I too had a lot of fun playing my few games. Thank you for the memories, and waddle on.

  • @ninja-naranja I'M barely allowed in! 😄

  • @musicmee said in Saying Goodbye to The Arena:

    Any pics of it anywhere?

  • @tre-oni I tried searching Youtube but most people found it when it was glitchy! But something must exist out there!

  • Alas! Arena was a good time while it lasted. Not too sad to see it go, but I am happy it's being honored. I imagine I'm not going to be alone in seeing it off over the next month and a bit. Still need a few of those commendations!

I would like to say, however, that while I am content to see the Glorious and Triumphant Sea Dog sets go under the circumstances, I protest the removal of the Legendary weapons set. Though they may be a mark of prestige for many, their theme is not inherently tied to Arena Mode and so they should not be tossed aside. Not only that, but the Legendary set is otherwise ubiquitous! To have it be left incomplete would vex me greatly, as completing it has been one of my main reasons for doing Athena's work in the past year. Perhaps tie it to another equally difficult to achieve commendation, or, if you felt like being a bit more generous, give the players who had the commendation a Sea Dog weapon set unassociated with Pirate Legend. Please leave the Legendary weapons set available through some means or another. Anything is better than making them unobtainable!

Either way, I'll be putting in time to Arena to try and achieve Legendary Sea Dog status before 10th. My birthday is on the 11th, after all, and it would be a shame to disappoint myself by showing up without a gift!

  • Just want to say thank you. I am upset by closure of the arena but if we are all honest we should have expected it. I did. I loved arena, but even I did not play it enough and understand your reasoning. You and your staff have created a game that has blown my mind with its beauty, entertainment, and complexity. It has created so many adventures and memories for millions of people and I am eternally grateful. I can only imagine what goes into a product like you have produced. This is a creative community and know that there is a way for the competitive nature of Arena to continue. Thank you all for your hard work and passion on this game I love dearly. I only wish I had known about it from the beginning, but I am glad to be a part of this community now.

    Yeah.. haven't found anything.

What was its colourscheme and sail emblem?

  • @indubitably1 Surely 'Dedicated' Arena players would play often so will be level 50 by the deadline and have gotten there organically before the deadline was announced. After all Arena has been running for approx. 2 years.

The option to buy a level is there within the game, some chose to level up this way as maybe their play time was sometimes limited, BUT regardless of how (it's up to the individual) they still got to level 50 so are eligible for the rewards.

Whilst you are understandably frustrated at not reaching 50, this is Rare's decision and way of celebrating the most dedicated Arena players and they feel it would not be fair to allow people to grind for it at the end, hence the cut off date.

  • @tre-oni it was a crescent moon, I’ve heard it was black and dark purple/blue with a light gray accent.

I would actually be happier with that than having it tied to level 50 which is no indication of commitment to the mode (as I said before, the levels can be bought, it could also be AFK farmed). At least with most of the commendations you know the players were actually active there and worked for them.

  • RIP anyone who nearly got teh good boy.

Announced 10 minutes after they killed it how to get it.

  • @seadog-orca My pirate is too shy to even approach Lesedi, or rather, he always feels like he has to impress her first before doing so. Guess now's as good a time as ever for him to make that move, right?

  • @musicmee said in Saying Goodbye to The Arena:

@realstyli Hmmmmmmmm. You claiming buying levels doesn't make you a rel Sea Dog?

You can infer that but I'm saying Sea Dog level is not really an indication of dedication to Arena if the levels could be obtained without playing it.

  • @apukincat Thank you for properly throwing in my contribution! I'm also very saddened by the removal of Arena. I've only played a few games, but had trouble getting into it due to odd timing with playing with my crew, and lack of trust in open crews.

As Pukin mentioned, I have some ideas for bringing Sea Dogs to Adventure Mode!
First- the tavern is opened up to Adventure Mode players and has a brand new attraction in it- the dueling arena. Players from the same crew or different crews can duel at the arena and will both earn reputation, with the winner earning slightly more.
Second - Sea Dog Emissary. Unlike the Reapers, the Sea Dogs are focused on glorious and honorable combat, so they have a different system of finding other ships.
When you put up Sea Dog emissary, you’ll get an enchanted compass similar to the Tall Tale ones that will only point to other Sea Dog emissaries. It will always point to the closest one. Having the flag raised will also reveal the locations of valuable Silver Chests on the map. These are located anywhere from shipwrecks to inactive forts, in order to present unique combat challenges to the crews who hunt them down. The chests will only spawn when there are Sea Dogs emissaries online (2 minimum) in order to encourage combat. (Thanks to APukinCat for this idea)
The Sea Dogs will only accept these chests, and other Sea Dog emissary flags. They’ll also accept Reaper Flags. You can only sell to them if you also have the Sea Dog flag up.
Emissary grade can be raised through sinking other player vessels with the flag up. Every sink will increase your grade by one, capping it at five. Higher grade flags sell for more.
This is meant to make finding PVP encounters easier for PVP players. The compass system allows for more stealth than the Reaper map system, and means that players will need to be vigilant about ships on the horizon. The Sea Dogs will only accept their own flags and Reaper Flags, meaning that emissaries for non-pvp companies won’t be targeted. PVP players won’t end up harassing new players or casual players, and will instead be able to find others who seek out that same thrill of combat.

These suggestions are free to be taken and modified, all I ask is credit if you post about it :)

  • @kommodoreyenser

The thing is man, sea of thieves as a game is moving towards episodic story telling. It started out that way with Hungering deep, them Cursed sails, and then dark relic voyages etc...and then guess what? The community whined, and cried about Missing out on events, and time limited things so they stopped it all together.

They tried to solve this with Tall Tales and This has held the game back for years. They cant even touch certain islands or make certain changes to characters because of the always present tall tales.

As much as people whine and complain about time limited experiences they are important. They make it so you as a player choose to engage with that event or not. If you do choose then you gain an experience and a reward for your time. If you dont you miss out.

Trust me man, as a day one player its been nice to sit back and be like “eh do I want to do this years Festival of the damned event or do I just want to go play another game and buy the cosmetics when they become available in the outpost shop?”

But now with the re-introduction of time limited experiences and events it make us weigh the importance of playing the game during those times. “Do I play Destiny 2 or do I play sea of thieves? I should probably play sea of thieves cause theres that event going on right now.”

Brutal truth is the gaming industry is competitive, and Rare as a company are competing with other games for our time.

Some people will not be able to have every cosmetic. Thats just how the cookie crumbles. But it will make the player base prioritize their time when they choose which game to play.

  • Honestly you hit the nail on the head with the lack of investment being the core issue here. If there was more dedication to the mode it would have succeeded. I actually liked the original version of arena before you changed the chest set up and due to matchmaking issues we couldn’t be bothered playing the mode anymore.

It’s a product of not taking the feedback on board and giving up too early. Now there will be cosmetics and achievements forever locked away to never receive. It’s a shame this is the decision being made without first looking to the community to see what they wanted. I still don’t think you ever put a brig mode in either.

  • @lizalaroo

That is backwards thinking. we have been slow to grind because its impossible to get a match. then you get less than 10k gold per hour. while in adventure i can earn 100k pretty easy

  • @blappo-spawn Arena was never about making gold though... It was about boosting your reputation as a pirate in the Arena and your levels.

  • @musicmee odd, it doesnt even come up with anything on google...

  • @thundercharg It's THAT ominous...

  • @bummsfalleralel ha detto in Saying Goodbye to The Arena:

I'm literally level 48.9 or sth. Absolute garbage move to close the deadline without telling us a deadline.

THIS. I'm in your same situation.

Rare please give us at least a week to grind the last 1-2 levels for who is super close to level 50.
