Server Size

  • Since the introduction of the Devil's Roar the map has felt more....empty. And it's only gotten worse with time. I've got hours and sometimes entire days without seeing another ship on the horizon. I've got 2 suggestions to fix this.

1: Increase the amount of ships per server, and make it number of ships not number of players. Something like 10-12 ships max per server.

2: Increase minimum ships that trigger a server merge. Again, my understanding, is that this triggers pretty much when it's just you. Maybe you and one other ship. It should trigger at a higher count to go hand in hand with an increased number of ships.

With how many things encourage working together or working against each other (Looking at you Legendary Thief) unless you're sailing the first weekend after an event goes live it can feel quite empty on the sea. Some days another ship feels more rare than the Shrouded Ghost.

  • @a-cry1ng-orphan I'd be all for more ships per server. I mean they added the devils roar which added around 1/4 to the map but no increase in ship numbers. Of course the seas will feel more empty.

  • @ronin20 Exactly. My immediate thought when I sailed in the main map was "wow, it's a ghost town" because everyone on was in the DR. And then everyone left it but it still felt that way. Adding a chunk the size of 1/3 the current map up to that time but not adding more ships had a huge feel change to the game.

  • I feel the majority of people have gone to arena which is why its so dead. My buddy commented and I realized we haven’t seen an actual galleon in ages we have only really ever come across sloops and brigs in adventure these days.

  • All the players are not over in Arena. Arena is even worse than Adventure. The lackluster recycled content mainly focusing on PvP has drove way to many pirates away. Some return if anything drops, good or bad, swooping in like locust consuming it and are gone in a day or two.

The sea is empty and with the content getting constantly worse it will become more so. It has become so bad many trolls and other toxic players have sailed on.

  • Then you must be very unlucky or I am very lucky (if thats what your looking for anyway) because I usually see at least 2 ships and on rare occacions even 4 at a time in the distance (and no those aren't skellies).

  • I see plenty of sloops and brigs and once in a blue moon get transfered servers its just galleons I no longer see on the servers

  • @themohaamaster I was on a server with like 3+ galleons the other day. Reminded me of pre-Brig play sessions where the feeling of danger sometimes exceeded the actual threat.

  • @ronin20 I rarely see any ships in the Devils Roar. Shores of Plenty is always crowded. I love the irony of it too. The most tranquil area is usually the most cutthroat and dangerous of all!

  • @longlivecayde6 well then I guess I just have some galleon repellent because I havent seen a galleon in adventure since maybe a couple weeks after arena dropped

  • @a-cry1ng-orphan

Why is an empty server a bad thing? I actually prefer an empty server or at least a server where everyone minds their own business.

Can I ask you a question, why do you get pleasure from hunting other players?

Gold has almost no value because of the limited amount of cosmetics plus there is no guarantee that another player has any treasure. Most players run when they see another player ship. Is spending hours chasing someone really worth it?

  • @themohaamaster That is really crazy.

I do see a lot less than at one time, but I still see them maybe every other session. My crew is often one of them! lol

Also, an increased number of ships per server would be a greater strain on the active memory that is being tracked by the actions of each individual player. As it stands now, the game seems to struggle at times with every new addition. I wonder if the build could even handle an increase in ship number per server.

  • @coffeelight5545 There is more than PVP to want a more full server. First off, PVP is and will always be a key part of the game. It’s not going anywhere. Also when the game launched the goal was you’d see one ship every 15-20 minutes, which we did. But now they’ve made it bigger, added another game mode, and did nothing to change the amount of ships in a server. In addition to the thrill of PVP (yes, some of us just enjoy getting in hour long fights. It’s not about the loot, just the thrill of crew vs crew) there are commendations that require interacting with other crews in various ways. And they are harder and harder for newer players to do when you don’t see anyone who is on.

  • @longlivecayde6 This is a valid concern. Something I hope they can work around to add more.

  • @a-cry1ng-orphan

I tolerate PvP and I’m fully aware that it’s not going anywhere. There is literally no fun to attack other players that don’t want to be attacked. Unless you consider hours chasing people fun.

This is why Sea of Thieves needs PvE and PvP serves. The only reason the PvP community doesn’t agree with this because they have fun harassing and trolling people. You would think that the PvP community would want a server full of people who would fight back instead of a server full of people who simply run away.

I was chased by a sloop while attempting to do a dark relics mission. Normally I would leave the server and start again but since I spend doubloons, I’m not abandoning that mission. I spend 2 hours running away. I sold what little treasure I have and my entire brigantine scuttled. We could have sunk them but we refused to engage in PvP. After we scuttled, they left and my crew got a server merge. I finished the missions without any other problems.

This is an example of what most of the PvE community does. They either run or leave the server. If the PvP community wants a challenge, either play the Arena or request a PvP only server.

  • I feel like they should lessen the time for the events. Most of the time you can finish these events in a day or 2 and then you have to wait a month or so for the next one and people end up probably getting bored waiting since they already finished so quickly.

  • @a-cry1ng-orphan

1: Increase the amount of ships per server, and make it number of ships not number of players. Something like 10-12 ships max per server.

This will do literally nothing for server population, all that does is increase server stress whenever the server is actually full, which is bad. :P

2: Increase minimum ships that trigger a server merge. Again, my understanding, is that this triggers pretty much when it's just you. Maybe you and one other ship. It should trigger at a higher count to go hand in hand with an increased number of ships.

If you are the only ship on the server, drop your anchor, this makes your ship eligible for server merging... If you never drop your anchor, you never merge with another server. It's usually instant for me, i have no idea how long it can take for some people.

However, if there are no other ships in your region, you wont server merge even if your anchor is down, you can't exactly play with people on the direct opposite side of the planet, too much lag, not enjoyable gameplay. :P

I'm assuming the reason why server merging isnt as effective as it should be is because most people have learned to sail without the need of an anchor... I for instance, rarely drop anchor when i stop by an island, i just raise sails and let the ships forward momentum slowly crawl to a stop by itself. : /

This game doesn't need PvP and PvE servers. What we need is players like you change their play style. This game is all about PvPvE. And that is fine. Most of the times i'm a pve player, but if someone attacks me I will pvp, or when im just in for it.

But now to my point. You already said it yourself. You spend 2 hours of running away for what? No reason at all? Just fight or scuttle instantly and let them take the loot you have. And then continu wat u was doing. Idc if my loot gets stolen, its part of the GAME. You blame other players that only PVP or like pvp for your bad time, while instead just go on the fight, dont sail away, most fights take 5mins, if you lose, have a good laugh and continu what ur was doing, if u win, have a good laugh also, and continu what u was doing.

And if u really, for some reason, dont want pvp at all. Well, then SoT is not ur game.

Ontopic: Server size is currently on 6 ships because of tech reasons, and I dont think it's gonna change anytime soon.

  • With Microsoft funding I see no reason the tech issue preventing server increases couldn’t be fixed lol

  • Have to agree with @Sweltering-Nick on this one. Unless everyone is forced to fly the reaper you just don’t know how many ships are sharing the server with you. At times they do feel deserted, at other times there’s another ship at every island you visit.

The game has an ongoing problem with syncing/netcode hence the stuttering, poor hit recognition and inconsistent reload times. I’d say ship numbers were about right. More could be asking for trouble. Server population may be poor though. We just don’t know how many people are playing the game.
