Gameplay suggestion/ improvements

  • I’ve been playing since Alpha and played for a good solid month or so before I put the game down until the recent Anniversary Update, which I must say, is a very welcome addition!

However, I do have a few suggestions:

    1. We should be able to drink the rum bottles in the crates we come across.

    2. Timed delivery quests are probably the least played of all quests, maybe axe them or make them more interesting?

    3. Ship Capacity -
•Sloops should be able to hold 3 players. •Brigantines should be able to hold 4 players.
•Galleons should be able to hold 8-player crews.

    4. When you form alliances, you should be able to select which of the ships you spawn onto when you die.

    5. Would help if, once an alliance is formed, you turned off friendly fire so we can work together more efficiently and not worry about hitting each other if we take on multiple enemies in a group at once.

    6. Current Brigantine Brig placement should be switched with the current map table placement.

    7. Ship Saves- There should be some sort of mechanic where we can save our ship setups and contents when we quit the game so we don’t have to waste time gathering things every single time we log into a new play session.

    8. Should be able to Harpoon the Rowboat

    9. There should be an easier way to find mermaid statues

    10. Should be able to harpoon the krakens tentacles

    11. Spawn explosive holding skellies less frequently. It gets annoying

    12. Zip lining with your sword when the harpoon line is attached to something should be a thing

    13. Higher gold payouts for items turned in.

    14. A level-up system that actually improves swimming, lung capacity, fighting, ship sailing, treasure digging, weapon accuracy, damage, bucket capacity, and healing would be amazing

    15. Cooking should be more elaborate, you should be able to combine ingredients and find recipes in barrels on the map as well as create a chef faction where recipes have to be learned from around the game world to improve your cooking skill making it possible to feed more amounts of people in a crew faster as well as heal faster and more efficiently with higher level recipes

    16. Pets - a pirate should at the very least be able to have a parrot they can interact with. Maybe a dog or cat?

    17. More sea life - Whales, dolphins, jelly fish, sea otters, turtles, etc.

    18. There should be a mechanic to Cut Harpoon Ropes when enemies attach them to your ship.

    19. There should be pub games like darts, pool, or card games implemented at every tavern

    20. Cannons with wheels should be moveable.

    21. Lighthouses! There should be lighthouses so we don’t run into land masses in storms...you know? Like irl? Also the lighthouses should hold different flame colors and you should be able to implement a commendation collecting system around that.

    22. Bounty System - there should be bounties set on either NPCs or actual players or both where you can tie them up and either bring them in for a reward or make them literally walk the plank. Should also be able to stick them in the brig.

That’s all I can think of right now, but it would make the game more exciting!

  • Bounty system = thumbs up
    Lighthouses = thumbs up

  • Thumbs up on almost all points.

Except for the making mermaid statues easier to find.
I like the subtlety of the didgeridoo drone. (If that's even the correct instrument).
It's eary and you have to have a keen 👂. Pun intended

Some of the points are in the works and just being postponed for improvements and testing.

  • 5 should be reversed. Friendly fire should be active for everyone including crewmates. The week they accidentally had friendly cannon fire on was the best week of the game. It took skill to avoid crewmates boarding enemy ships while firing cannons. Turn Friendly fire on.

That is quite the list! #4 and #5 jumped out at me. I like the idea that alliances can be broken, and a friendly crew suddenly turn out on you, so disagree with #5.

And, assuming #5 is not implemented, #4 suddenly becomes very problematic... I envision forming an alliance with a 4-player Galleon. They go off and do their own thing, waiting until they see you, say, heading for an outpost. They all gather around a lit gunpowder keg, die, and all 4 of them simultaneously spawn out of the blue on your ship, taking you completely by surprise. I don't think I would want that!

  • @arsigi That would be hilarious though!

  • @duke-of-spire Only the first time, though. :P

Grog = rum i dont see a need but on the other hand why not

    1. Timed delivery quests are probably the least played of all quests, maybe axe them or make them more interesting?

Merchant alliance desperatly needs something thats not tedious and time limited

    1. Ship Capacity -
•Sloops should be able to hold 3 players. •Brigantines should be able to hold 4 players.
•Galleons should be able to hold 8-player crews.

Oh god no the unballance that would create is unfathomable

    1. When you form alliances, you should be able to select which of the ships you spawn onto when you die.

But what when you want to break the alliance, and people can just spawn on other peoples ships, this is basicly easy teleport to the other side of the map.

    1. Would help if, once an alliance is formed, you turned off friendly fire so we can work together more efficiently and not worry about hitting each other if we take on multiple enemies in a group at once.

Not change friendly fire, but different collered nameplates would help at least

    1. Current Brigantine Brig placement should be switched with the current map table placement.

Yes and no, would be better walking wise, but it would prevent holes from forming in the front of the ship or prevent them from being repairable

    1. Ship Saves- There should be some sort of mechanic where we can save our ship setups and contents when we quit the game so we don’t have to waste time gathering things every single time we log into a new play session.

I feel no need for this, but the option to buy a one time set amount of supplies every logon would be possible and not balance breaking

    1. Should be able to Harpoon the Rowboat

You can, you just cant dock it to your ship that way. Which is not weird since the docking place is in the back not the fromt

    1. There should be an easier way to find mermaid statues

Easier way how ? They are random spawns on islands and make a (to me annoying) sound that makes people aware of their presence, they are not meant to be farmable

    1. Should be able to harpoon the krakens tentacles

I dont see the use for that, care to elaborate? You can damage them with harpoon and you can pull players from their ‘mouths’ if someone gets sucked up

    1. Spawn explosive holding skellies less frequently. It gets annoying

I find them hilarious and makes doing high level OoS voyages and forts way easier, you can take down an entire wace with one bullet!

    1. Zip lining with your sword when the harpoon line is attached to something should be a thing

    This sounds awesome

    1. Higher gold payouts for items turned in.

Nope they do not need that, gold is absurdly easily attained nowadays, even when not really doing much me and my crew amass 100 to 200k gold in a single session

    1. A level-up system that actually improves swimming, lung capacity, fighting, ship sailing, treasure digging, weapon accuracy, damage, bucket capacity, and healing would be amazing

This will not and should never happen, the game is all about an level playing field for everyone, if you are PL (like me) or a fresh new pirate every fight is equal and only comes down to skill and sometimes a dash of luck.

Cooking skill level comes down to the same answer as above, but specific recipes/food combinations sounds cool though

    1. Pets - a pirate should at the very least be able to have a parrot they can interact with. Maybe a dog or cat?

    Pets are incoming

    1. More sea life - Whales, dolphins, jelly fish, sea otters, turtles, etc.

Would be nice but i think (with the bad press around whaling) whales will be a no go

    1. There should be a mechanic to Cut Harpoon Ropes when enemies attach them to your ship.

This mechanic already exists, shoot the harpoon gun that has its harpoon attached to you and voila detached

    1. There should be pub games like darts, pool, or card games implemented at every tavern

    1000x yes

    1. Cannons with wheels should be moveable.

Maybe, but where do you want to move them ?

    1. Lighthouses! There should be lighthouses so we don’t run into land masses in storms...you know? Like irl? Also the lighthouses should hold different flame colors and you should be able to implement a commendation collecting system around that.

Like irl not all islands have lighthouses, there are quite some islands that hold braziers that can be set alight by players and outposts and forts already have a clearly visible flame aka lightbeacon.
In the time of pirates there alse werent that many lighthouses as we know them nowadays just light beacons/large flames

    1. Bounty System - there should be bounties set on either NPCs or actual players or both where you can tie them up and either bring them in for a reward or make them literally walk the plank. Should also be able to stick them in the brig.

Npc’s cool, could be another faction, player wise im on the fence about since incentivising pvp could lead to more pve server outcry

That’s all I can think of right now, but it would make the game more exciting!

  • @callmebackdraft

You Should be able to break the alliance without negative consequences. Access to each other’s ships ceases and if you were on the opposite crews ship, you get respawned on your own. Friendly fire becomes enabled again.

  • @callmebackdraft Actually lighthouses were more prevalent than one might think in the 16th & 17th centuries. I would like to see the horns atop Sea Dogs sound off once in awhile...... Like when a fog rolls in.

  • i am starting to think we should consider increasing crew sizes. the main argument against this back then was that a larger crew meant more people repairing and thus any ships would hardly sink. now, ship damage has received a major update where each mast, the capstan, and helm can receive damage and require repairs.

i also think more skill needs to be applied to boarding. one way to doing this ( as @Duke-of-Spire stated) is by applying more friendly fire to cannons. i also would like to point out that dropping an opposite crew's anchor has determined many battles and proved too easy to accomplish compared to preventing or recovering from it. there are now more ways to immobilize a ship. therefore, dropping the anchor via capstan needs to immobilize or slow players and cancel the interaction if they are hurt. it would be a fair QoL change considering that interacting with any other part of the ship would render a player immobile.

I think a “vote to exchange crew” option would be fitting, so that you could switch spawns based on that locational vote which could be done with an emote similar to the friend request one, and the crews would just have to vote to turn player exchanges on or off.

There are so many things wrong with these ideas... Allow me to explain why:

    1. Can be abused by pirates (same or opposing crews) to prevent you from earning 700g.
    2. Debatable...
    3. Ship's crew size has likely already been tested extensively internally by Rare, and the sweet spot is 2, 3, and 4. More than that and you'll have a lot of pirates either bored or butting heads.
    4. An instant cross-map teleport to betray the other crew? Wait until they get to an outpost, teleport to their ship, ambush and defeat them, turn in loot? Yeah, sure, I fail to see how that's broken... 🙄
    5. Effectively would eliminate a key facet of gameplay - stealth and betrayal. This would prevent additional crews from pretending to be a part of an alliance when they're not. Why remove such a pirate endeavor?
    6. The brigantine was designed to be purposefully claustrophobic - place the table in the middle, and it becomes much easier for boarding crews to shoot you as you retreat below deck.
    7. This would allow effective crews to hoard and dominate other crews due to their supplies. Imagine being a new player grabbing supplies only to have a galleon roll up on you with a barrage of endless cursed cannonballs. Everyone starts evenly and has to earn their supplies. Cosmetically-speaking, you can't save the appearance of the ship because your next crew may be entirely different. What if you joined another crew? Your ship or theirs?
    8. You can, but it's a bit of a drag...
    9. They're not that hard to find as is, and they are among the most valuable things in the game, hence their hidden nature.
    10. You can harpoon your crew out of the tentacles.
    11. One of the few things I can actually agree with.
    12. Redundant with sword surfing.
    13. Look for Gold and Glory weekends, with double your gold!
    14. Has horizontal progression by design to preserve player balance.
    15. Overcomplicated, and again, game balance.
    16. On the way, but further Insider testing is needed.
    17. Agreed, but no protected species like whales - we got megalodons for that!
    18. There is! Shoot the harpoon gun itself.
    19. Debatable. May detract from actual sailing, exploring, and pirating.
    20. Would break game balance with cannons at the front and back of ships. Imagine being chased and not being able to get away or position yourself into a blind spot.
    21. Not period authentic, I think.
    22. Ripe for griefing if used with actual players. As for NPCs, we already have it - just visit the Order of Souls. Besides, due to the open-world, sandbox nature of SoT, you can always set your own bounties with other players by simply offering up loot and a description of your target to other crews.

Ugh, this took forever to type up on my phone... 😑

  • @n3xusp0laris i teleport/respawn and hide aboard allies ship, maybe with another crewmember, wait for them to finish their athenas or whatever then quickly steal the athenas before anyone could hurt me and tell my crew to disengage alliance.... there is too much abuse possible there.

  • @duke-of-spire euhm not lighthouses as we know them, sea of thieves is considered to be in the golden age of piracy,

the Golden Age of Piracy spans the 1650s to the late 1720s

If we then look at the history of lighthouses:
The Eddystone Rocks were a major shipwreck hazard for mariners sailing through the English Channel. The first lighthouse built there was an octagonal wooden structure, anchored by 12 iron stanchions secured in the rock, and was built by Henry Winstanley from 1696 to 1698. His lighthouse was the first tower in the world to have been fully exposed to the open sea.

There where lighthouses before but only in roman occupied regions and they werent lighthouses but large beacon flames that signaled ships that they where in range of ports as we see in the sea of thieves

  • @callmebackdraft @Galactic-Geek
Is there an actual 'period' of time for SOT?
What year were skellie ships invented?
    RODL!!

  • @galactic-geek said in Gameplay suggestion/ improvements:

Ugh, this took forever to type up on my phone... 😑

Wow, you are a glutton for punishment! o.O

  • Oh and for the record, the concept of lighthouses is kinda neat. Each outpost could have one - I do believe they each already have a beacon flame, which could be replaced by something a little fancier. Each one could have a different color that could be seen from a long way off. Oh, and since there are no real 'machines' to be had, there will need to be an NPC down at the bottom turning a crank, or some other sort of mechanism to make the light 'turn'. One who can complain about their lot in life when you interact with them. Feeding them fruit will speed up the light for a bit! OK I'm done now. :P

  • @lil-fokker Just because some things are fantastic in nature doesn't mean that it should drastically change into something else. If that was the case, why not have space pirates and laser guns?

    See what I mean?

  • @arsigi

Build them next to waterfalls and have a wheel and pulley System using the waterfalls own force.

  • @galactic-geek
    yeah....fair point.
It definitely helps to immerse into a game that plays into our history and cultural mythos.

I get a little carried away when....there's undead that live and sail beneath the waves, giant glowing sharks and skulls that whisper to us. Life never ceases and death is but a momentary inconvenience (no matter how wreckless we are....we reincarnate magically just mere moments after death!!!).

  • Interesting ideas. Personally, I believe many of them create imbalance.

#2: The time limit makes them interesting. The nature of the quests are boring. Except for cargo runs which I personally enjoy

#11: I would prefer if their running speed was reduced. Funny as it can be, it feels cheap

    #12: Climbing them as well

#15: I really like this idea

  • @callmebackdraft France also had lighthouses during the Golden age, correct?

  • I like most of your ideas. A few I don't agree with from a game balance perspective.

I never realised that you couldn't harpoon rowboats???? I just assumed that you could.

  • @duke-of-spire they had port fire beacons

  • @viperishemu2992 said in Gameplay suggestion/ improvements:

I never realised that you couldn't harpoon rowboats???? I just assumed that you could.

Ugh... I already went over this! You can harpoon rowboats! It just doesn't work like other objects, like with the barrels, for example. It doesn't instantly pull it right up to the harpoon gun (otherwise, you could have 3 rowboats, tons of additional storage space, and anti-cannonball armor). Instead, the harpoon will just drag it across the water and pull it alongside the ship. I'm not sure, but the harpoon might also damage the rowboat.

    Ok

    1. Timed delivery quests are probably the least played of all quests, maybe axe them or make them more interesting?

    Ok

    1. Ship Capacity -
•Sloops should be able to hold 3 players. •Brigantines should be able to hold 4 players.
•Galleons should be able to hold 8-player crews.

This would become a serious balancing issue for PvE and PvP.

    1. When you form alliances, you should be able to select which of the ships you spawn onto when you die.

Oh please dont, it will become so worse, that nobody will ally up anymore.
This sounds like a suggestion from someone playing on alliance servers, but is not that familiar with random Alliances on the regular.

    1. Would help if, once an alliance is formed, you turned off friendly fire so we can work together more efficiently and not worry about hitting each other if we take on multiple enemies in a group at once.

I'm promoting the idea of friendly fire in crews to have more funny accidents happen, be able to duel anytime and to increase difficulty and challenge of a crew.
Especially when it comes to cutlass spamming.

    1. Current Brigantine Brig placement should be switched with the current map table placement.

I think the Map Table of the Galleon belongs to the captains Quarters and the Map Table of the Brigantine should be there where you drop your journey.
The Brig on the Brigantine is also some sort of a tactical blocker to boarders and to defend the stairway from below deck.

    1. Ship Saves- There should be some sort of mechanic where we can save our ship setups and contents when we quit the game so we don’t have to waste time gathering things every single time we log into a new play session.

Because this is a session based game people with plenty of time don't have any advantages.
I'm against this, because this means powergamers would get a significant advantage.
They will steamroll with nearly endless supplies, cursed cannonballs, food etc.
Keep it session based because of balance.

    1. Should be able to Harpoon the Rowboat

    yes, why not

    1. There should be an easier way to find mermaid statues

    I think it's easy enough.

    1. Should be able to harpoon the krakens tentacles

I dont know why, but ok, i see no problem with this.

    1. Spawn explosive holding skellies less frequently. It gets annoying

Actually i feels like they are toned down. I over time got the feeling the spawnrate changes dependent on what is actually happening in SoT - Bilge Rat Adventures, Tall Tales etc...

    1. Zip lining with your sword when the harpoon line is attached to something should be a thing

    Cool suggestion

    1. Higher gold payouts for items turned in.

Was increased a lot and things got much cheaper. There is already some sort of inflation.
Sone people sit on xx Millions of gold already while having buyed everything you can buy.
I at least have 1.3 Million i know someone who has 23 Million.
    Way too much!

    1. A level-up system that actually improves swimming, lung capacity, fighting, ship sailing, treasure digging, weapon accuracy, damage, bucket capacity, and healing would be amazing

It would let me instantly quit playing. I love this game for having horizontal progression and having all players gamemechanically same strong. No gamemechanics that create a gap for powergamers and casuals.
The gap is already there because of playerskill and practice, knowledge of the game. You need not and you mustn't increase this gap by rewarding powergaming with perks.
Vertical progression is the worst thing i came across playing games.
To me this began to get worse when you need to play more to get that better ironsight in Arena based Shooters for example.
I'm playing games for 33years and i know what i'm talking about.
The performance focussed society and the performance focus on playing games is rather about gaming systems than about playing games for fun!!!
So a big no from me.

I am not completely against it, but i dont want to play a survival game or have fishing and cooking become mandatory. It is already a benefit in PvP if you have cooked food.
I am pro more complex stuff, but keep it optional.

    1. Pets - a pirate should at the very least be able to have a parrot they can interact with. Maybe a dog or cat?

Will be added soon, i already have seen a monkey in insider build.

    1. More sea life - Whales, dolphins, jelly fish, sea otters, turtles, etc.

    Sure.

    1. There should be a mechanic to Cut Harpoon Ropes when enemies attach them to your ship.

I think although this is very much logic it is not easy to have this implemented in a balanced way.
    But i vote yes.

    1. There should be pub games like darts, pool, or card games implemented at every tavern

    Dies and all you want.
And waste your gold for this!

    1. Cannons with wheels should be moveable.

If it needs 4 people to move it yes, but here we go and have another balancing Problem for people soloing etc...

    1. Lighthouses! There should be lighthouses so we don’t run into land masses in storms...you know? Like irl? Also the lighthouses should hold different flame colors and you should be able to implement a commendation collecting system around that.

There are the Flames from the Festival of the Damned event.
    Good idea to use them.

    1. Bounty System - there should be bounties set on either NPCs or actual players or both where you can tie them up and either bring them in for a reward or make them literally walk the plank. Should also be able to stick them in the brig.

I already explained elsewhere how easy this can be exploited and how much a PK would like this and laugh up one's sleeves.
I can explain this further, but need to know what is your intention to have such a system!?
It will encourage PvP and PvP need not and mustn't be incentivized in an open sandbox full loot PvP environment. I played some games with such systems from UO to original Darkfall from Aventurine and recently Legends of Aria.
All their system about Karma, Bounty or whatever do not work, because they can be circumvented and easily exploited. In the end it encourages people to game these systems.

That’s all I can think of right now, but it would make the game more exciting!

Not all, but some i agree and some are very worse, sorry.

I want to add having a wheelbarrow to transport stuff on islands would be cool.

Adding a chance to jam a firearm when it got wet.

And get rid if exploits like animation breaking to still be able to duoblegun or dig faster etc...
    is more important to me.

  • @callmebackdraft what about the Corduan? It's ok that the lighthouse sticks with the flame theme. Also I'm not sure RARE has ever dated this game to be historically correct. Megladons, Krakens, the undead but I get your point. One or 2 lighthouses that can be explored like the Corduan would be cool. Maybe put one in the Northern Wilds and one in the Southern Devils Roar where they are most needed?
