Fishing Bait - Why?

  • When I fish in RL, I go to the bait shop for live bait...or I dig it myself.

At the Sea Ports, why can’t the Vendor NPCs sell limited supplies of live baits?

Or..we have shovels...why can’t we dig for our own RNG baits! They are Earthworms, Leeches, and Grubs...all obtainable in, or around the ground.

Why can we only carry 10 total baits? We can shove a shovel, fishing pole, spyglass, bucket, music instruments, lantern, mug, drum, horn, compass...shove them up somewhere on out Pirate...yet, can only hold 10 total baits.

The specific bait is used for a certain RNG pool of Fish, yet..when you equip a Earthworm(for example) you may not catch a fish that likes Earthworms, you can still catch a common Spashtail. Therefore, you lose these live baits which are so limited.

We need realistic ways to get bait.

    PS...we still reel backwards...

  • Well Said! not only should there be a store for fishing but thats where the rewards should be, not in the equipment shop.

Also bait seems WAYYY to rare on islands, today and yesterday we searched a few and nothing to be found except on outposts.

They need to adjust/increase the rate they appear in barrels

Totally agree with the Fishing rods being in a separate Bait Shop. And why no Fishing hats, or waiters, or cool Fishing clothes? Did I miss those in the shops?

It feels like some of the Fishing stuff ended up partially done, or rushed, with the focus on Arena and Tall Tales. ‘Yea, just toss some baits in the same barrels with everything else’

  • I'd love it if bait could be acquired in a shop or by digging, and taken out of random barrels.

  • Buying bait could be a cool feature.

  • Supplies being bought would be a really good gold sink.

  • digging up worms needs to come!

    and a fishing hat!

  • @uberkull you forgot our 10 cannonballs, 5 wood, 5 food, and cursed cannonball types.

Baits weigh as much as cannonballs but more than wood and food.

I agree on your points, I just like complaining about the number of cannonballs we can carry and the limited amount of other items.

  • We still have that boarded up building where the OoS is. Since it's on stilts it is protected from water. Could totally be a Bait and Tackle shop where you can buy bait, rods, and fishing clothes. Maybe you can even take your trophy fish and get them mounted there!

  • The backwards reeling really irks me. I hope Rare changes it. Seems like itd be a relatively easy change.

  • Yeah, something needs to change about bait. Currently it's really messing with my ability to get certain fish. Doesn't feel good to go onto a resource hunt for bait.
I think it should be completely reworked, other resources are essential for the journey, but depending on your situation even two of the bait types may be completely useless.

I'd rather have buckets full of bait, one on the ship and each dock on the islands to refill. Finding them in barrels is unnecessarily tedious just to be able to use them in a side activity.
Another way to handle it would be to replace bait with different types of blinkers and such (like some tissue, a shiny piece of metal or a feather) that would work the same way except they'd be reusable.

But then again one problem I have with bait is how you need to look up which one to use where. It's not a big thing but when the devs put so much effort into not having a ui for fishing itself this feels really clunky and not as elegant as it could be.
I'd like to see the devs figure out some probabilities for each fish to bite and some priorities for each situation and get rid of bait all together.

  • Ok...now I’m 😡 off. This bait search has now turned into a huge waste of time.

The problem is, when you get down to the last set of fish you need to catch and you need a specific bait to catch a fish, you spend more time stocking up at random islands then actually fishing. And you can only hold so many.

I hate spending an hour plus trying to get leeches to fish for a Storm fish..only to run out cause got hit by lightning, can’t sight fish and save the leeches on false fish, or just plain bs when you pull a Spashfish that wastes your bait.

Design it right and make a bait shop for a gold sink.

  • Being able to buy bait would be fantastic. If we can only carry ten total, maybe we could buy up to ten of what ever we are after.

Also, if we are using the bait correctly, like right bait in the right aria/situation WE SHOULD NOT CATCH SPLASHTAILS! You can cast in shallow water and pull back the bait if you don’t want the fish but still. It’s such a waste of time.

Finally, they have to for real raise the prices you get for the fish. Sure you can fish all you want but it takes WAY to much time and too many fish to gain even the low teen levels.

  • @uberkull solid ideas man!

  • We need BAIT!

  • 2 words - game balance :)

There is no precedence for purchasable resources in the game... the intention is for them to be scavenged. Digging could be cool. And we already get bait from random barrels.

You obviously fish casually. If you were ‘Hunting’ specific fish, (Hunter’s Call eight?), you would know how ridiculous the island to island search for a handful of specific bait for the fish you are hunting.

The game can’t maintain the ‘search in barrels’ design for it to grow. Baits and the Merricks belong in a Fishing bait shop.

  • I was literally just logging in to post about being able to obtain your own bait via digging or turning over rocks or buying through a fishing shop. Would also love to see fishing cosmetics like sun hats or what have you.
I’d also love to see a fishing crate or bucket similar to the fruit crate for mass turn in.

  • @uberkull

Straight up buying seems a bit much. No supplies are purchasable.

Now, I like the idea of digging them up. Make digging give you a percentage chance of getting a random piece of bait. Maybe even do like the fish, where certain areas raise the chance of certain types of bait.

The limit I'm okay with. Sure, I'd be fine with holding more, but I don't think it's needed. The limitations on the amount of gear our pirates can carry is clearly based around game balance, not any form of realism.
