Sea of Thieves Anniversary Update Feedback

  • So, now that the update is up and out in the wild with all of you non-Insiders, what do you think?

Tell us about the fishing, cooking, new companies, additional achievements, Arena, Tall Tales, expanded ship damage, harpoons, and other additional features. What do you like, not like, and why?

  • We are a Crew of 4 and tried to play the arena for 1,5hours now... but can't because there are alot of incomplete Crews that join. Then some of them run off.. and well.. this ain't working!!!
    We will play advemture now.
You should change it so that only full Crews can set Sail for Arena.

  • @benigraber the point is that if me and two friends wish to play, as a closed crew, then we can without having to have a random join, or 4 of us in the first place.. I'm not entirely sure what you mean, is it waiting for full crews to matchmake but it's not working? This could be first day server load issues, I'm sure it will get fixed soon enough

  • @benigraber

There are some known issued currently around Arena matchmaking -

  • So... The same issue that was present during testing? That's no good

  • The Arena Matchmaking is Broken, It arrange sthe players into crews as they enter the lobby.

The wait times are ridiculous. The arena matchmaking has a flaw. It creates the crews as players join the lobby. Inevitably, a player ; gets tired of waiting, disconnects, has a wife, has kids, has life. And leaves.

This results in a crew that's a man down. This usually happens multiple times resulting in multiple short handed crews. The game won't start till they are full.

This will sort of be less an issue during prime hours. More players in the pool. However, this will still be an issue late night, month from now and so on.

The lobby should be focusing on getting players in first and starting a timer once a certain number is hit, locking the lobby and. Arranging the crews to start at this point.

That's why you've been in lobbies with 16 people but the game won't start, there's a possibility of 4 crews with 3 players and one full crew, equalling 5 crews in the lobby.

If there are 12 people in a lobby, it should then make 3 crews and start.... But the way its set up, it could be 3, 4 or 5 crews all with a missing player.

    Hope that made sense.

  • Before work I logged in. Caught a fish, cookEd it, burnt a banana, and used the harpoon one time. The only thing I have is I wish you could combine ingredients in the future and make platters.... because we'really probably going to spend hours cooking for no reason. And also if you leave something on the stove too long it should catch fire and give you something to contend with. But so far I'm really happy I can fish and cook now

  • @galactic-geek

I'm stuck at work for another 4 hours, but I'm using my work computer to look at what people are saying around here. I can hardly wait to get home a play!

    Priority 1. - Tall Tales

I've been waiting so long for my pirate to come face to face with the Gold Hoarder! Having played the release candidate in Insiders, I think Tall Tales is the best thing about this update.

    Priority 2. - The Arena

I'm a bit bummed that it's galleons only for now, but I'll try it out.

    Priority 3. - Hunters Call

I am excited about this don't get me wrong, but I'm the type of person that's more driven toward excitement and action so I'll probably do some fishing when I'm looking for a more quiet and relaxing experience.

Of course, I'm such a completionist I'm so excited to get to level 50 in Sea Dogs and Hunter's Call, and to get all the Tall Tales comms!

  • Matchmaking seems completely broken unless you want to wait 20+ minutes for a match and that’s even if your lucky.

It’s not because the game is dead but due to some questionable decisions in terms of matchmaking by Rare themselves.

I’ll provide more feedback on Adventure when I get to experience the “campaign”, fishing, and that new stuff later on.

I still think Sea of Thieves should have deeper mechanics but it’s getting there.

Slowly but surely it’s sailing off that club penguin loop.

  • Tall Shores or whatever these are called are terrible... its just more confusing and stretched riddles... nothing fun about that. Got exhausted pretty fast

  • @ii-jumper-i I'm lost for words

  • @chronodusk

I heard thunder irl and that got me thinking about Meg. My body is at work but my mind is out to sea :)

I'm not! But out of respect for @Galactic-Geek's request for respectful and constructive responses, I am biting my tongue. :P

  • May i say i hate this update. I came at an skullfort. Immediatly the mast and the steering wheel broke down by skellies. And we couldnt do **** anymore. They fired so fast so we couldnt fix **** and got stuck. The game needs a big rollback. Like this it aint fun anymore.....!!!

  • The parrot boat is nice and the new stuff that you can buy....but thats it.

  • My 1st solo sloop outing for the update and in my 1st galleon encounter, I nailed and dropped all 3 masts! 🤣

The truth is tough sometimes huh?
Im shocked how some of you can praise this?

Me and my buddy gave up pretty fast on that Shroudbreaker quest. It just wasnt fun at all.
I expected cutscenes, a quest marker etc... a completly overhaul. Not more of the same but stretched out to make it seem long or epic.

  • Love the Tales. Love the challenging new ship play

  • From the Insider, I knew I had no chance to do Tall Tales solo.
LFG hooked me up with a good random crew and we figured out the first Tale easy enough.

First couple of Arena matches were awesome with another good random crew, but the wait times are generally disappointing.

  • when sinking by a Skeleton Ship or Meg, or just because you ran into an Island, you now spawn across the Map as far away as possible?

I sunk at Galleons Grave, (no pvp involved)
    Spawned at Mermaids Hideaway

I sunk at Golden Sands, (no pvp involved)
    Spawned at Old Faithful Isle

  • @m4dkraut I'm not so sure that's the case - I had a moment of bad aim against a skeleton holding a gunpowder barrel when it was right next to my ship. It killed me and sank my sloop, but upon respawn with my new ship, I only appeared about 2 or so islands away. In your case, as unfortunate as it seems, I think it was just a run of bad luck.

Arena mode definitely has potential, but man, you really need a good crew. I ran a closed crew with a friend and a friend of his (so, a 3-man galleon), and the latter was so slow at coordinating with us due to his inexperience! He didn't even know about the knockback changes with the guns which allowed us to get boarded! Multiple times, the best we could muster was only 3rd place - and while it was nice to see our banner in the Sea Dog Tavern, it was so small as to be almost humiliating when compared to the 2nd and 1st place banners.

My intuitive friend, who I have mentioned several times in the past, also had more good ideas that I hadn't considered. For example - "why can't we just shoot or harpoon our crewmate's fish once they've got it hooked?" He had more, but I can't recall them all, which is a shame, because they're always good quality of life-type ideas. I might have to get a notepad and start writing things down as I play with him...

  • So you want my opinion @galactic-geek?
    (Huff)

THIS IS THE GREATEST SOT UPDATE EVER!!!

I don't even know where to begin:
Tales Tales, The Hunter’s Call, Harpoons, The new Fruit types, fishing, the sea dogs Tavern?
    It's all sooooo good.

It's like launch again, so many new things to see and experience!
Honestly if SoT launched with this level of content last year much would have been different.

All and all though this update is the BOAT! (Best of all time)

  • @galactic-geek you really didn't explain anything from the beginning. The mechanics of fishing or cooking. And the depth of the quest. The what to do and not do. I'll explain. My number one complaint is the fact if you get ambushed from others while doing tall tails. You fail the quest. My crew got ganked and lots the totem as soon as we got it. WHILE figuring out the next riddle. That really sucked. We had to start all over again from the start. That's another +2hr. The fishing was weird to figure out at first. I did what any fishing simulator would have you do, but ended up breaking my line 5 times over. I finally figured it out, but the frustration in the beginning omg. Then I don't understand cooking at all. I'm lost with where to find stuff like spices and recipes. Arena was a ghost town. Next time you need a short tutorial for sure. My crew didn't understand the stacks at hand with the new quest. That ticketed me off greatly. Getting to the point of finding the ancient chest, to then die ( which is ok) but to have the quest ultimately fail. I'm not going to spend 8hr on a quest all day.

  • I lost interest playing SOT earlier this year as we had almost 6 months with no new content. Now this has dropped, I still feel the same after a short play session. Crossplay has been swept under the rug, friends still don't want to come back to play it whilst they have to play with pc players, so I have to random match, no fun there, I would happily solo, but that is getting harder and harder to do. So I find myself closing game down and back to different titles still. Too little too late for me.

  • Yesterday quit early need to get up early for work -.- go to boss ask free day cuz you know theres parrot stuff, new food to gather, trophy fish all that and they understand i hate to do this but i go home now and work on it :")

  • @shadowblade2010 While it's unfortunate to hear that you failed due to being attacked by other players, it is a part of the game's premise, and if you're not taking precautions, then I'm sorry to say that the fault lies with you.

As far as the learning curve goes, this game has never been 1 to hold your hand - that's part of what makes the open-world sandbox of it so frustratingly great. I myself have been playing since the alpha and even I am still learning new things to this very day.

Regarding your time with SoT, I would advise not playing it unless you have at least 3 hours to spare. You might be able to do 1 hour with a cargo run or 2, but there are things that, as you well already know, that can waylay your journey.

  • New ship damage makes soloing a really tough go if you get caught BY THE INFINITE CANNONBALLS OF ISLAND SKELETONS. I just spent 30 minutes trying in vain to escape the insanely avcurate AND I STRESS INFINITE cannonballs of two island skeletons while solo playing, only to finally sink and lose 2 voyages worth of loot.

All im asking, make them have to go find more cannonballs too, because trying to raise my mast while getting blown 20 feet away every 8 seconds when they fire was an excersise in frustration and futility. Like seriously i used 80 wood on that ship. Thats too many computerised shots when im literally trapped in their range with a broken mast. -1, unhappy solo ragequit

  • @derschneider13

I need to change tactic to quikly take out the canons between bailing i guess xD

  • I knew that people would moan about this update, but I'm shocked as to how many have moaned already. My crew played last night and it turned into a fishathon, I'm not great with fishing but I like the fact its a skill not just a button press, luckily my crew became quite adept while I decided to kill chickens and gather fruit instead.. Meaning we are almost rank 5 with the hunters call after only a couple of hours play time.. Had a blast, looking forward to trying tall tales and arena next

  • @derschneider13

I may be telling you things you already know, but there are ways to avoid island skeletons and their cannons, after a while you do tend to learn the safe spots to approach and drop anchor as well as the islands that do have skellie cannons with A+ aiming skills.

Forts now.... are a different issue altogether, not tried approaching one of those on a solo sloop yet.

  • hi
    i have two problems:

    1. Great Lag after the update, i change servers but no way the lag is there.
2)I have read that the locations in shores of gold chages every time i play it, but it's 3 times that i start the first quest and every time the Magpie’s Wing Ship’s Log is in the same location...it's normal?

Every fort has a blind spot, some even have 2! We used them a lot way back when the forts still had auto-aim (no, what they have no isn't auto-aim folks. If you could only go back in time to those sweet first 2 months of SoT to experience what auto-aim is really like).

My suggestion for @DerSchneider13 is to adapt to the new system. Learn new ways to approach a fort. Know that your old ways aren't working anymore, but there are definitely ways to use the new tools to your advantage!

  • @robcors I can't help you with the lag, I have had no issues with this on my end.

The Magpie's Wing however will always be in the same place as that is where the ship went down. Some parts of the tales will be the same every time, like where you get the Tale and if there is something like a shipwreck to search through, but a lot of the other steps to get to the end might change - different islands or riddles to go through each time.

  • Not specific to the anniversary update, but it would be really great if you guys could bring over HDR support to the PC. It's very odd that there isn't feature parity here with the Xbox version. I was hoping it would be added with this update but I can't find confirmation that it has.

I recently purchased a 4K TV and would love to sit back and play Sea of Thieves on PC at its fullest potential from the comfort of my couch.
