New merc voyages. Disappointing.

  • So to keep it brief., the new merc voyages are repackaged and dull.

The reapers one are just a boring load of nonsense where you end up getting attacked over and over and over and sail between the same few islands over and over.

I've just spent 5 minutes being spawn killed on a sloop by a galleon. Couldn't get anywhere as the second I log in, 3 people all screaming 'it's a pirate game' just spawn kill you over, and over and over. Add in xbox load times, it really makes this even more time consuming and frustrating.

Really well done on content that isn't fresh, or original or much fun at all.

Uhm, u actually talked to duke? Or u just picked up the voyage, started it and now mention the "flawness" of it?

Duke explicitly tells u (if u talk to him) about the reaper voyage. Its 1 island to get back to all the time to be an easy picking, are u up for it.

U could have known before u even started the voyage

  • @tonelessmusic11 It's fair to say it's not particularly exciting in and of itself. But in its defense, the voyage is designed to force crews to get in close proximity to generate some pvp. Point is, it's working as intended. If you don't want to pvp, I would suggest not putting that particular voyage down.

Maybe give it a week or so. Usually the seas become a little more trigger happy when these new events start. Once most folk have it all completed and are back to their usual activities, you'll more likely be left alone.

  • @tonelessmusic11 I'm sorry you feel this way.

For me, let me say this has been a great experience. It's been awhile since I had this fun interacting with other players from other crews. Would it be PvP or awesome alliances, I really had some cool moments.

The only thing I have to advice you is don't close the door yet. Give it a few more tries. You'll eventually find your self in awesome moments too.
Be open to people, don't let them frustrate you. Find other people to help you, if needed.
    Have fun.

  • Pretty sure they did these Merc voyages to test out servers with high PvP moments. They picked the perfect island for it too. I've had nothing but fun and epic moments. This game does offer more then just PVE and voyages. Practice before arena and even if you don't play arena your PvP will have improved for standard servers.

  • To clarify,

I've done 4 out of 5 of the reapers voyages and I am fully aware of what Duke has to say on them. I'm also capable of pvp and can hold my own mostly. I also can accept losing pvp and being sunk and losing loot. What I forgot to mention, and dislike massively was this griefing ship already sank us and just kept coming back for really no reason. We had no loot. Just the want to finish our voyage.

This is my thoughts after having nearly finished them.

  • I have no issue with tests for pvp being done either. I did hope rare would attempt to make something that was interesting, not just old content with a new sticker on it.

  • @tonelessmusic11 Sorry matey I disagree, I love this event and I am making lots of gold for 5 doubloons.

  • @tonelessmusic11 so you made a post "criticizing" the new Merc Voyages just because of one time situation... That do not seems fair to me...
That could happen to you while doing any other kind of thing. It's a game with players, with a huge range of minds. We cannot predict what they're thinking.

It's an awful situation, I agree. However has nothing to do with this quests specifically.
It happened while doing that, but could happen while doing any other thing.

  • @nunoazuldimeter

Again, I've done 4 out of 5 of the reapers voyages.

I've sank plenty of ships and been sank a few times. This is my view after having done it.

For your benefit I'll point out my annoyances again.

    • It's old content. Nothing vaguely new be interested in.
    • I'm fine doing pvp, but it gets stale no matter if I'm sunk or doing the sinking if it's constantly happening.

It just happens being constantly griefed by one ship over and over earlier regardless of us having loot or not has made me want to post about it.

  • @nunoazuldimeter exactly. It could have been a brand new quest type and he still could have been, as he says, griefed.

As I see it, the other crew was playing the game. Learn to defend yourself. If that doesn't work, go grab some barrels and go full suicide on that crew.... over and over again.

  • Not a lot of time after work to play, so I started a brig and headed to wanders with randoms. By the time we arrived we had sized each other up, thought we had a pretty good crew, and voted to speed run our first reaper (don’t hate grinders). One shot over to an island while one sailed to the next. The first quest went down extremely quickly so why not do another? Through the second and third leap frogs we ended up with a reletless meg and two galleons doing everything they could to sink us, but we continued around the triangle focused on our mission. Thanks to the galleon crews for being so persistent! With the extra time added evading, anchoring, and killin.... we ended up digging out quite a few of the chest and leaving them stacked in a rowboat to pick up on our final pass. So, I’ve had fun so far.

  • @tonelessmusic11 Thanks for your feedback! I personally don't usually encounter much PVP on the open sea, so this quest has been a rather fun change of pace. New concerns, new playstyles, new strategies. But I hear you that it has been a disappointment for you. Some people will like the Reapers Run, some won't. Such will be the case with any update.

I agree that we need a new voyage type! Excited for the mega-update, since Joe has said they're overhauling the voyage system

  • @tonelessmusic11 I'm not saying you only did that once. Nor you can't handle PvP. I'm just saying that's an unfortunate event but you couldn't blame the voyage itself.

    • It's old content. Nothing vaguely new be interested in.

This I agree, it's Old Content because it's the mechanics this game is based on.
For something new and revolutionary , we couldn't not be expecting to be brought by a BR Quest.
Probably those things that will be revealed 20th Mars will be more revolutionary on gameplay and mechanics aspects.

This new voyage is supposed to trigger the way people interact with each other. Not the way people interact with the game.

  • @tonelessmusic11 this is a pirate game but that crew of jerks are not pirates they're just idoits

  • @tonelessmusic11 Here is the thing, sea of thieves embraces different styles of play and because of this some people love events like skeleton thrones or searching for the DR crew that died while others like the more battle oriented events. You dont like it probably because of the style of play you like but we can atleast be understanding that this kind of event pvp people seem like they love it. For example, summit and pace and crew love this stuff and have literally not done the non pvp events. They represent a large player base just like pve type players. This forces players prone to pve into pvp which makes for a very entertaining and devastating outcome. It will cool down and will have its place in the future as more things come out. Also understand the initial releasing of a new feature in this game is like crack at first but it will slow down.

  • It is very important to point out that the Reaper’s Mark is not a PvP flag. It is open to a number of choices of play styles and can be used for several different purposes. So, the Reaper voyage does not on its own equate automatic PvP. However, due to the choices some pirates will make, there is a higher probability of more competitive player interaction.

Just on the content itself this Merc voyage, like the one before it, and the guilded voyage before that is just rehashed, recycled content that has existed for over a year. The only difference is Rare made the objectives closer together and offer a lot more gold. For many this alone will make the reuse of year old content acceptable and satisfying. Truth is it is more of the same. Nothing original or creative. Just like all the recycled content for most of the first year the game has been released.

This recycled content has had a couple purposes. It is all filler while Rare is hopefully working on more truly new, original content. We shall see. Cooking, fishing, pets will be new. The Arena is just recycled content shrunk down in a smaller package with a few new trimmings in the attempt to provoke more PvP in a competitive way in a Battle Royale type flavor.

The Reaper voyage is also a beta test in production to gather metrics for the Arena. A little taste of being a Pioneer and pay doubloons to do. On its own it is extremely lack luster and mindlessly repetitive old content almost everyone has already done over and over for a year now. Without any sort of player interaction it is very boring and ridiculously lame. Rare needs to stop recycling content and rereleasing it as new content.

The game seriously needs more original content. It also desperately needs to become more grounded that there is way more on the Sea of Thieves than just killing other players over and over. This is not a PvP game. Only a game of many choices where that is only just one of them.

  • @tonelessmusic11

The Reaper's Run is supposed to be a high risk and high reward voyage. The risk being that all players must visit this one island, while other players who know people will be there are out plundering that loot from others. It looks like this one is working as the developers intended and I've found it a lot of fun. If you're being spawncamped you've already lost and you should scuttle instead of wasting your time.

Additionally, we all know mercenary voyages aren't really all that special. They are profitable and they earn you doubloons. I don't think we're supposed to be super excited about mercenary voyages, in a way its just small filler stuff until we get the larger updates.

Right now we're missing Bilge Rat events. I think people need to be more understanding that they probably have all hands on deck right now working on the Mega Update to make that content as enjoyable for us as possible.

I do feel like they could have made a bit better use of the high traction they had at the first of the year, but I can understand if they push all of their effort into making sure the big game changers are ready to go. We all just need to be patient for now. I've got a feeling that when they announce the Mega Update details on 3/20, part of the announcement will be to tell us that it isn't that far off.

  • @tonelessmusic11 said in New merc voyages. Disappointing.:

    • It's old content. Nothing vaguely new be interested in.

It's old content with driven player interaction which is exactly what Joe Neate said they were going for. It's something to do before our next major update.

And interesting interactions it has brought, yesterday had a sloop trying over and over again to sink us and steal our loot. It was fun, and with all the gun powder barrels we had in our nest (6 + 10 we stole off them during the second sink) they could have easily sunk us if they won the king of the hill battle. I had so much fun!

@Rayzback Nice story Matey! Wish I was there for that one lol, like you I been limited this week. (and weekend, going out of town) :(

  • We had fun when we saw a ship doing the voyage with reapers on the map and sailed up with bad intentions. He “let” us sink him and sell all his captain chests - very kind. But yeah seems like a grind...

  • The devs literally said this is an update focused on PvP and the reapers flag has long been a symbol as "come fight me"

Sounds like we had same type of adventures..

Day 1: was amazing whole server team ups making insane gold 250k
Day 2: was none stop battles which all started with a ship sinking to kraken and everyone fighting for ship floating loot. After that everyone fought at 1st site. getting shot in back looking for chests and doing it back to other teams. Finding hiden chest stash spots -- made 100k.

Didnt expect this event to be as good as it is actually.

  • I understand why you have this perspective. The Event is positioned as most challenging. Likely solo players will not succeed in this endeavor.

We complete 5 of the 5 voyages last night and fended off many attacks. Surprisingly no one was in alliance mood.

That said big issue with forming an alliance with the reaper's mark flying, caused it to come down when offering an alliance. This voided the voyage voted on.

This has invited the fight and PVP. Which depending on your play style is good or bad.

The use of rowboats and multiple players makes this an event requiring 3 or more players to be efficient.

We sailed a brig. Left 2 people on Wanderer's and sailed to Plunder Valley and Discovery Ridge with one player to do the riddle. If they died trying, they had the boat to re-spawn and finish, the others would immediately start digging the 3-6-9 chests on Wanderer's.

solo, I can only see a realistic tap and go strategy work and forgo the gold revenue to earn the skins and tittle. Willingness to send your boat off as a distraction and survive digging. Not very efficient, but doable.

  • As Motörhead sang:
“You win some, lose some it’s all same to me! That’s the way I like it baby I don’t want to live forever!” :P

I’ve had frustrating times and great times on the reaper run. And I’ve only been doing them the last two days 😂

  • The Reaper Merc Mission is a trial run for what Arena will basically more or less be. If you don't like it then I'm guessing that you won't like Arena.

There will always be youths out for blood in this game, and this voyage set is likely to bring them to Wanderer's. If they sank you, and you came back, you need to be prepared to sink again, OR you come back with a vengeance and Risk throwing your ship away to sink them. They obviously had no intent on cooperating.

We had a sloop come back at us 4 times during the evening. Each time they fired first. End of discussion, to Davy Jones you go. But We had a galleon who fired first, PVP'd them and sank them. After, they just sat off-shore waiting to gain access between our time on the island. A truce was reached, a decision they took, to wait their turn.

If you are willing to forgo your loot, offer to dig it up and give it to the oppressor. If not, you need to fight for your right!

  • Tbh I've been seeing alot of these complaint threads on here. All of them have to do with griefing or PvP or change this so it's a safe server or give us a safe space. This is the reason why Rare is making to many changes. Because people get offended thinking they can join this game and not have to worry about PVP. I'm sorry but even if you alliance a whole server you're still gonna run the risk of a crew leaving and terrorizing you guys. It's a sandbox game, what do you expect. You're crying about a one-time thing. Every time I play I experience something different whether it's negative or positive. I sit back and go "this is an open world, sandbox game with pirates, with other players whom I've never met before. Of course there are going to be weird moments and good moments and bad ones". People need to get over it and just play the game how it's meant to be played. Like a pirate.
