Sea of thieves "crashes" shortly after splash screen. Stays hung at a perma black screen.

  • Sea of thieves "crashes" shortly after splash screen. Stays hung at a perma black screen.
Windows shows it only being around 19.48MB installation

    Update:
I have tried the following without success
1.Logging into PC with Microsoft account. Start - Settings - My Info - Login to PC with Microsoft account instead of local account
2.Make sure to update to the latest version of windows
3.Try uninstalling any other app from Microsoft store and reinstalling it before trying to start Sea of Thieves again. If you don't have any download some small app from the store and uninstall it. Has fixed the problem for some
4.Reinstalling fixes the issue nearly every time if the above fixes don't work.

    Updated video drivers
Attempted starting game with lower video settings
    Resetting Windows store and SOT
    Multiple attempts to uninstall/reinstall

    Installed on a different drive.

I have raised a support ticket at this point.

  • This is on PC btw.

  • My pc hS been having random crashes during launch of the game looks like you may have experienced a crash that just didn't close out the client. My client has closed from that crash everytime but not everyone pc will respond the same to a crash. Just restart the sot client try again.

  • @vderickv This all happened after the last patch.
    I have attempted the following

1.Logging into PC with Microsoft account. Start - Settings - My Info - Login to PC with Microsoft account instead of local account
2.Make sure to update to the latest version of windows
3.Try uninstalling any other app from Microsoft store and reinstalling it before trying to start Sea of Thieves again. If you don't have any download some small app from the store and uninstall it. Has fixed the problem for some
4.Reinstalling fixes the issue nearly every time if the above fixes don't work.

    Updated video drivers

    Nothing.
Game starts then perma black screen.

  • Are you able to adjust graphic settings before starting? If so I would try to rule out a gpu issue by setting your setting to all cursed settings and retrying. Highly doubt it's your gpu. Sounds more like the redownload of sot on that last patch may have corrupted something in the process. You have tried uninstalling sot snd reinstalling already?

  • @vderickv Good Idea! I am only able to set them at this time via my NVIDIA settings but to no success. Same results after setting everything to cursed and a lower res.

  • @picklebeard22
If I were you I'd submit a ticket to the sea of theives staff and see of they could work with you personally to solve this.

As this could be part of something they arnt aware of.

  • Going to reinstall again and then go that route.

  • Yup no change after uninstall/reinstall.

  • Something is very wrong every time I uninstall and reinstall it indicates the install is only 19.48 MB. Any idea how to wipe this from the horrible Microsoft store?

  • Update: After trying multiple things I could never get the MS Store to download the full 28GB onto my C:. I changed to my other driver and it is now starting the full 28gb DL. Will update if able to launch.

  • @picklebeard22 said in I open sea of thieves see the splash screen then perma black screen.:

I open sea of thieves see the splash screen then perma black screen.

    Any suggestions?

My buddy that plays on PC was talking about this on friday night.. He said he had to totally re-install to get the game working.

He told us that he un-installed his game and then did a fresh clean install and now the game works good.

  • @swimplatypus7 Wish that had worked for me.

For some reason when I attempt to uninstall via add/remove programs under windows it looks like it completes. When I go to MS store to update it indicates its on 19.48MB and then says it was successfully installed.

  • I just received support response. (Not Verified Yet)

    Ahoy there,

The vast majority of cases are fixed by the below steps:
Please follow each of them according to the list, including the last section.

    -Try another antivirus / firewall
    -Change your NAT to open
-Open up official Xbox Live ports

-Turn off Teredo on selected routers

    How to get the update:

  • Fixed: I just went ahead and "reset"/re-installed windows.

  • I had the same thing yesterday, but on Xbox! Rebooted the Xbox, uninstalled and reinstalled twice. Eventually I just gave the black screen some time, and the game started.

  • I've had hangups after SoT splash screen on XB1 as well... 🤨

  • My buddy also had this issue on XBOX.

I suspect something is/was corrupt in the original download that caused this. I don't know his status but he was resetting his xbox (not sure what that means) and was going to DL again and install.

  • This worked for me:
Windows Search → Apps and Features → Scroll down to Sea of Thieves → Advanced Options → Click the Terminate button
    Then try relaunching the game

You may need to uninstall and reinstall after doing this too :)
Good luck hope you find a fix!!

  • @picklebeard22 did you ever get it fixed

  • @dynamo512
Yeah I just reinstalled windows fresh and everything worked.

My buddy on xbox factory reset his xbox and it worked
