6-8 Crew Ship

  • I'm just curious, but would everyone else agree with me that the Galleon is large enough to be operated by a 6-8 man crew? The other's can fit 1-4 more members as well. I can see 3 people being on the Sloop, 5 on the Brig or whatever it's called, and a maximum of 8 on the Galleon.

  • We’ve tried that by having a couple of crews on the galleon. It made us incredibly OP.

  • Yes and no.
While there is room for other crews to join you and have a fun time, the ship was tuned for 4.

For there to be balance between the vessels, the galleon needs to stay at 4 players.
Little things like time it takes to turn and raise sails, lift anchor, turn the boat, distance to the cannonball barrels, all work together to make it so 4 players can run the ship and engage in combat well. If you tack on more, then they can outplay other ships (and the same can be said about overloading smaller ships, 3-4 people on sloop was brought up before and there was outcry).

There were many suggestions about adding a larger crew Man O War ship, but Rare hasn't indicated they were working on a larger vessel.

Part of that may be the balance of players on a server. If that is a technical limitation on number of players or a set amount for their goal of "every 20 minutes encountering another crew" hasn't been specified. If it is a server load issue, then the more players on a ship there are, the less ships there would be on the server. But this is speculation, as some have thought it is number of vessels, not player count that is balanced.

  • They purposely designed the ships so that even at max crew you wouldn't be able to do all of the ship tasks at once. They wanted crews to have to make decisions about what was more important.

  • If I was solo slooping and saw a Galleon with 6-8 people on it, then I would scuttle and log out and find a new game to play.

  • Yeah -- seems a bit unbalanced to me, but good thinking! These are the kind of ideas that Rare really does look at it and consider sometimes.

  • Even if it was a seperate server mode for bigger crews i just really want to ditch all those barrels and junk to open the gunports and roll out the extra canons!

"Ze pirates saw us opening her gunports and turned away"

  • @agent-molasses the crew sizes are very balanced. The whole point is that they cannot be fully functional with more than one pirate missing.

Increased sizes resolves in an ordeal that regardless of tactic, the opposite team will never have to sacrifice one aspect over the other. Which results in unsinkable, super vessels which always benefits the larger crews in battle.

The current crew size is perfect for balance, people can be forced to have to deal with situations leaving them vulnerable in other areas and with good team work can always be overcome.

Rare didn't happen to choose these limits without a purpose and enough testing.

  • @aclassali Lol Yeah, I see your point. What if to counter those larger crews they made a 1 man Ship called the Dingy, it was very fast and can out maneuver every ship to avoid conflict, it was large enough for 1 Cannon, 1 Sail, and a small deck to store your loot and one locker or chest to store all of your cannon balls and other items. It comes equipped automatically with 5 Anchor balls, 5 balls that make the cannons unusable and 5 Sleep balls?

  • Other than 1 less cannon, your effectively describing the sloop (in a way).

I do know where your coming from on this but I honestly think the crew sizes are perfecty balanced and fine the way they are.

  • @agent-molasses I would like see another ship added to fill that role, the Man o' War ship has been discussed alot. I would love for it to be an addition. 1 or 2 per server, 4 sails, 6 upper deck cannons, 4 on the middle deck and 2 rowboats, 1 on each side.
Imagine how fun an athena run would be. You could 2 teams of 2 set off in rowboats while the other 4 man the ship.
