Dropping/raising ladders

  • Ahoy forum friends and rare!
I didn't see this idea in here yet and if it is I apologize. I feel that ship combat isn't what it could be because most of my battles result in ships just running from each other and trying to anchor each other. The only time I've had to engage in combat when I didn't want to was if they got the drop on me while playing solo.
I think it would be an awesome idea to be able to raise or lower your ladder the way you interact with your sails. If you are off adventuring you need to remember to lower it or else you will have to die to get back on your ship. Then when you are sailing or see a ship preparing to engage you can raise your ladder. This would eliminate the constant shoot people into the water to try to anchor you.
Now I know a complaint will be "what if I get knocked off or fall off my ship. This has happened to me plenty of times in combat with the ladders down anyways. You would either have to die/mermaid back.
I think this would be a good timing change with arena coming up also. If this just allows people to run away you could introduce a cannon ball that forms a magical/"cursed" barrier up that gives the ships room to maneuver in but doesn't allow them to escape.
Thanks for the positive and negative feedback all. Happy Sailing!

  • This has actually been brought up a few times, although some time ago.

One suggestion in the past was to have a rope hanging along side the ladder that could be used to drop the ladder from the water as well as the deck. This way you are able to get back on board, and people attempting to board you can still have a shot as well.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, I support the idea :)

  • Found one of the old posts with an illustration of the rope to raise/lower the ladder.

  • ehhhhhhhhhhhhh mate, you said you have problems with people running away, why on earth would you want to remove one of the best pvp aspects of the game, wich is boarding the enemy ship lol, how do you think you are supposed to fight people. you would have to ram their ship and board them, making your ship take dmg, rip solo players lol they cant board people anymore because they need someone to repair there ship after the ram. the only other thing to do is cannon them wich will last forever cause they will just repair and you will just repair, it will literally only be a battle of who has more cannon balls and wooden planks.

  • Ahoy @mortis6688 !

There is another issue with ladders that can be raised not allowing someone to climb up on your ship other than yourself or crew if you fall off. We all are sailing on a Sea of Thieves. There still needs to be a possibility for someone to climb onboard a ship.

Something like this would be fine if there were tools to allow pirates to still be thieves or otherwise board your ship in combat. A boarding axe comes to mind. Maybe a grappling hook that can be shot from a cannon to attach to another ship once along side it. Depending on height differences boarding pirates could cross over on the rope hand over hand or walking it like a tight rope.

  • They don't need this, boarding is only possible if you get a good cannon shot or against new crews. It's honesty not hard to watch ladders.

  • It's not hard to sink ships without ever boarding either, if you have the right cannonballs and a crew that knows how to use them - so go ahead and protect your ladders! To me, it matters not, because you'll still be treading water with the sharks for company... 😈

  • @xzodeak my issue isn't with boarding. Its what the ability to board turns the combat into. I want actual ship battles with more emphasis on cannons. Not one person controlling ship while the rest of the crew is trying to anchor yours as you run away or vice versa. I liked the boarding tool ideas. Maybe a cannon shot tethering the ships together?

  • @galactic-geek it depends on the crews really. It's not hard if you are good and they are bad. I've been able to out play both brigs and galleons for hours solo sloop
with fort loot. not exaggerating just running away and anchor turning, guarding ladders, etc. Unless I want to engage in combat I can run for hours. Even solo slooping. It's the combat I'd like to see improved. Even if it's not ladders just a way to force two ships to use cannons more and board tactics less. Thanks for your input!

  • @x-crowheart-x love the tethering idea. I think that would add interesting mechanics and prevent the run fest!
