  • Ahoy maties!

It's that time again, another action-packed inn-side story video!

Fire, water, smoke, explosions - find out how they were all captured and infused into Sea of Thieves (and especially into the Forsaken Shores update) with the help of Andreas and Natalie from our Visual Effects team!

    Talking points include;

    • The team visited Cornwall to capture how the sea looked!
    • Studio built to specifically capture fire, wow!
    • Bubbles!
    • Smoke captured from a match using DSLR
    • Kraken spray uses effects captured in Cornwall!

  • @musicmee AYE I SEE YOUR BACK TO TELL US STUFF! that was me yelling voice sorry

  • if they don't need that RED Camera anymore, i'll take it...

  • @musicmee

That's some really impressive stuffs! I didn't expect the visual effects to be done with so many real-world shots. We really see all the passion they put into what they are doing to the smallest detail. Love those bubbles.

  • @musicmee

That's got to be the coolest video I've watched for a while, so impressive to see how they worked on these effects and it really shows in game! Absolutely stellar work.

  • Really interesting vid this time! So much work put in to making it real but cartoony. Love the Sea of Thieves style.

  • @katttruewalker Agreed 100%! I love these technical looks behind the scenes!

Even though I can see the match thing, with the smoke... how they got that same effect in the game is just mind blowing and something I cannot compute!

Being a server guy - I wanna see more data/coding stuff!

  • Around at time 3:43 they show an ice cube hitting water.

    Ice Region Confirmed!

  • I love these videos, but i have to say, that this one has missed an amazing opportunity.

Dropping a banana into that water, in slow motion.

  • Waw, Rare has turned their Helmswheel into the direction of Peter Jackson's Island. It is very great to see all the details and how much commitment and dedication that goes into small details that get overlooked so much, like those campfires or the little flame that dances on a candle...Not be me, i remember back in the days of the Alpha 's that i was looking for minutes if i could find a repeating pattern in the Danceof The Flame....In the end i got a bit hypnotized and forgot time and didn't hear the Captain asking to lower the anchor...A collision was the result...

Still , i would be a bit carefull in revealing this much detail...Many other developers are waiting to learn and copy just that what has been shown...

But i'm also very sorry and feel a lot of guilt too. i know that the Captains of the Order of Souls Missions are based on real peoples. Mr and Mrs . Oberg ,i'm very sorry that i have killed your Captains before without knowing that they represented two very, very talented people...Next time i will burn the mission and choose a different one...

Absolutely great video and documentory, this reminded me of the Appendixes from The Lord Of the Ring. The same Quality and the same strong will to depict Fire ,water and smoke as realistic as possible...
Those visuals were already a treat for the eye but my jaw dropped open ( * Yikes, what a horrible sight to see...ya dumb moron) as soon as i realized that these two people are part of the team that made this marvellous Sea...
More than once have i collided the ship because i had dreamed away while my eyes were dancing over those astonishing looking waves...

Mr and Mrs. Oberg , and maybe more that work in the same team...Your work and your determination to depict things as realistic as possible has succeeded more than perfectly...Very great job and thank you for sharing so much details that will probably will be copied by others....

In the meantime by Ubisoft..." Sir Bossman, finally...You don't have to postpone Skull and Bones anymore...i finally found out how i can make water realistic". Sir Bossman: "Watching a video doesn't mean you can do the same ...You need Talent as well...Now ,you dear Ubisofter ,do you have that Talent too ? Can you deliver the same quality of perfection as the Oberg's did?" . Ubisofter: " Uhm, ...is copying and reusing old engines not enough to do the job?"...

    just saying...

  • Fascinating stuff! I love these "behind the scenes" videos and would love to see more.

  • Same. I’ve watched them all a few times. Would like to hear from mike. Always liked the way he talked about sea of thieves.

  • wow, amazing work :) thanks for share it with us

  • Hats off and full credit to those behind, those behind the scenes.
Those who never get their names mentioned.

The programmers who design the software that makes anyone look like a professional.

  • that was really interesting

  • Exceptional behind the scenes video. Really cool to see some of the bubble references then transition right into them used on the shipwreck in world :-)

  • Cornwall eh? So that's why the sea looks so polluted. Mind = blown.

  • @sgt-palooggoo maybe?

  • @musicmee Impressive! The Visual Effects team are amazing! Well done Andreas and Natalie. clap-clap

PMSL. At 3:42 maybe but at 3:43 is the new AI threat. Grapezilla.
3:42 could also be a threat without bourbon. :o)

  • I just re-watched this one (because I realized my wife had missed this one for some reason, so we watched it together).

As someone that has always watched behind the scenes documentaries for movies and special effects, and worked on such things myself, I love seeing these things from SoT.
I honestly didn't realize they used practical elements to help with the FX, but it makes so much sense.
I've always felt that the work done on this game seems far more like a movie production (in all the good ways) than a lot of other games I've witnessed.
And that also seems to translate into their amazing trailers/teasers.

    Anyway... GREAT STUFF!!
