Opening chests

  • We should be able to acquire keys in our travels (found in sunken ships, washed up ashore, bought from Gold Hoarders, etc) that we can use to open chests. Loot contained can be anything from resources to weapons/gear/cosmetics to gold/trinkets/doubloons. The more valuable the chest, the greater chance for riches.

    Thoughts?

  • @thedastardlyjon the GH guy has the keys, we are paid (in gold) to retrieve them for their value.

I believe you are describing loot boxes, all I can say is no, imho.

  • @violentandroid

I agree, if the game was built for that type of reward system it would be a completely different thing.
But addding it to a game 6 months after release when it's not build for it.. no.
For it not to ruin the game the loot must be pretty "low level" average stuff, so we would end up with 40 pairs of the same shoes etc without possibily to scrap them and other similar issues.

  • @thedastardlyjon that would be sweet. But you made me think about, what if there was barrels or stationary chest around the map (not gold Hoarders chests) that requires keys to open and inside there was not treasures but sets of clothes and skins for weapons we could collect.

The game could have specific sets for players to collect, not only buy.
This would increase the exploration of the world, to find the keys and to find the chests.

  • For whatever reason, chests just don't work like that in this game world. It's not just part of the mechanics, but part of the lore as well. It would be awesome to be able to open them and see inside, but I'm afraid they'll always be a mystery.

I think it would be wonderful, now and then, to be able to open a chest, you'd get the same feeling as opening the treasure vault on the skellie forts - curiosity, surprise or shock, plus having a chance at unusual items like outfits or rare objects would be fun.

There are a number of opened chests strewn around the world, maybe sometimes these could be locked and we could find the keys elsewhere.

Anything that adds to the variety of experience would be a great addition in my view.

  • That would be defintely more than nice!

Yeah some mystery with different chests and a little trail to follow like riddles would be nice. To have a key and find what reward is waiting at the end. Definitely no loot boxes, just incorporate a new way to find chests and discover what is inside them.

It could be similar to messages in a bottle. You find a key in the sand walking around an island that starts you off with a clue. You go through a little riddle like treasure hunt and find the chest not knowing what you found until you open it. Could be sacks of gold, trinkets, gems, even several skulls.

  • That would be fun. I'd like to see something implemented that builds on the GH quests for this, much like how the strongholds are basically an extension of the OOS quests in a way. It could work if there was a large cache of items hidden somewhere and you have to embark on a scavenger hunt to find it.

  • I understand that we are commissioned by the gold hoarder to gather the chests to bring to him, and that's why we wouldn't get to open them. But it would be cool if we could open the ones we find on islands or in shipwrecks to see a chest opening animation and to collect the gold directly, instead of handing these over to the GH outside of a quest.
