The Wilds Rework.

  • The Wilds?

The Wilds in SOT is a region of the map that consists of similar island topography and makeup. Looking into the topography and geographic makeup of islands, I feel like SoT is missing something crucial.

    Creeping Jungle

The islands in SOT are lacking a few distinctive features that are common and uncommon in the Wilds.

    • Nature
    • Jungles
    • Exploration Incentive
    • Lore

    Nature
The nature on the islands is very bland and repetitive featuring an overuse of the same assets to a blatantly noticeable extent. The reuse of these assets, lack of wildlife, and generic lost civilization feel to each island gets bland and annoying.

    Jungles
When I think of the Wilds, I think of dense uninhabited jungle forests on massive islands never touched by man. All the islands in the game consist of the same features (Trail leads to the middle of the island, splits off, one to two caves, crashed ship somewhere, same foliage), it’s all the same.

    Exploration Incentive
All of the islands in the game are clearly displayed on a big map, showing all of their features, and revealing all of their interesting features. For the most part, when I see an island on a map, I know what I’ll get when I get there.

    Lore
Wait, there is lore? Oh you’re talking about the wall paintings... nice.

    My suggested changes
I suggest that a whole new batch of islands are created and places into the world replacing other islands. These islands would be uninhabited, and densely forested, with massive trees, tall grass, and vines. The islands would be a whole different environment to explore from the normal islands we are used to. The islands would have little landmarks on the map, and most of everything on the map would be covered by dense forests. The chests would be harder to find, the snakes more annoying, and the skeletons hiding in tall grass and weed would be a horrific sight for any well headed man.

So what do you think mateys? Is the Wilds lacking? Does it need more content or a rework? Let me know in the comments!

  • I love the wilds. It's my favorite zone, and I love the atmosphere. I know people prefer pretty shiny beaches and blue water, but the doomy gloomy nature paired with the rocky wasteland style islands are a perfect compliment to the rest of the map, I think, and I would hate to see it change.

  • @drunkpunk138 If not the Wilds, maybe one of the other areas needs a rework. I personally can’t tell the difference between the shores of plenty and the ancient isles.

Rather than see any areas reworked, I'd just like to see the map continue to expand and offer more diversity without taking any of it away. I totally dig the idea of more jungle style islands as you described. I think some maps show off quite well how tense a denser set of vegetation could be, especially if it applied to more of an island. I can also imagine some nice scenery emerging from such a style.

  • My only request would be to not make it as dark in the night. The change is so drastic, I don't want to have to increased my tv brightness. It actually hurts my eyes at times trying to venture around. The lantern only makes a minor difference.

  • I don't think any of the areas need a rework mate. Each biome share similar topographical traits by design, so you always know which is which, and each zone has its own distinct feel to it.
You might like or dislike any of the 3 based on personal preference, but that doesn't mean they need to be reworked.

Rather than just wanting the current biomes to change, I'd rather see your suggestions added as future zones, like we're getting the new volcanic area in Forsaken Shores.

Other than that, I agree with the rest of your post, and you're far from the first to suggest more lore and exploration incentives, which hopefully will be added with each new expansion, or Bilge Rat Adventures.

  • @tundra-793 Yeah thanks for the insight, sorry for making the OP so ignorant, I’d much rather see a dense jungle biome in a future area rather than a rework of an existing area.

  • It looks like the Pacific NW's nautical biome (also known as the Pacific Ocean...except that it's rough, windy, rainy, and horror movie-esque for a large portion of the year). Not the forest part so much. There are many more maps to come, so like others in this thread, I also believe that messing with huge amounts of theming in existing areas probably isn't the way to go.

  • I think each biome is pretty unique mostly in the design of their waters. But if you are looking for more diversity they are adding a new Biome in the forsaken shores free dlc.

  • The wilds reminds me of a battle torn area which has seen a lot of conflict and turmoil. That’s my take on it anyway. Everything’s so hardened and battered and rough and nothing’s really standing properly. It just looks unsafe and dangerous And that’s what I like about it.

In terms of a visual sense it’s not very appealing compared to the other biomes but i personally think that’s the point. The atmosphere there always makes me feel on edge and like I need to watch my back more than usual.

Just my take on it anyway. :)

  • @haydensolo I think the whole map deserves this type of enrichment of its respected areas; maybe a bit more diversity in the different islands. I guess it will come with time.
