"Special" Ship Weapons

  • So my idea would be to have a special weapon that can be put on any ship. This weapon can be chosen by the crew, so some crews will end up using different playstyles. Firstly, I think a harpoon would be a cool idea, so if a ship is trying to escape you can reel them in with a harpoon gun. Next would be a triple cannon, similar to the ones on the Flying Dutchman in Pirates of the Caribbean, which can be used to shoot a triple cannon burst out the front of your ship to discourage people to run from a fight and have to turn to avoid shots. Another special weapon would be a catapult or something that can launch flaming rocks to spread fire on enemy ships. To counter this the enemies would need buckets of water. I think these weapons can vary the playstyles present in the game and if they are balanced can lead to a fun experience for everyone. Some other small ideas of mine would be ropes to swing onto other ships and the ability to fire not just cannonballs out of cannons, but whatever you please, such as bananas, chickens, snakes, etc. Please consider these changes and share, thanks.

  • @massir77 How will the crew obtian these weapons? And are they permintly part of the ship?

  • @massir77 No frontal weapons at all. This is just a concealed attempt to put the chased into a disadvantage and force them into PvP.

  • @crimsonraziel I agree, if they add front cannons then they would have to add rear cannons too.

  • Swivel guns were small cannons usually mounted on the top deck of a ship. They were mainly used against crews on the decks of their ships, or as a deterrent against boarders. These would be appropriate to the genre and could be mounted on the front (or rear) of ships, if they were implemented.

  • I'd love to see harpoons, especially if they could do extra damage against the megalodons. We need a more effective weapon against those menaces.

  • They need a depth charge that can one-shot the stupid Meg so she doesn't interfere with our skellie battles!

  • @enf0rcer I was thinking you would always have a special weapon equipped and it can be changed at the shipwright.

  • @hrubixcube maybe something that launches explosive barrels into the water.

  • @crimsonraziel that's exactly the point. The guns wouldn't shoot far, but if you do make it within fighting range, and the other ship tries to escape, you can reel them back in. That way, if they don't want to fight, they avoid the ship in the first place and will add reason to avoid enemies altogether, so those who want a fight won't retreat mid battle.

So perminate selectable weapons avilable at the start is what your saying? If so this kind of thing was disscuss under customizeable weapons. Iwould like the idea of finding or building a special weapon along your journey, more reason to keep playing and build up your presence in session. But i would also make these weapons stealable if not outright destroyable or both.

  • @enf0rcer well rare wants an even playing field so having to find these weapons and going into battle against others who don't have them won't be fair to those you're fighting. I think it would be cool if everyone got them, but they choose which weapon they prefer, so combat feels more diversified.

No everyone start off even and no one is locked out of doing somthing you can't do or lock in to doing somthing they would have to do. Not having every fight an even playing feild because if were an even playing feild noobs would be matched with noobs and such. I think your confused. As we already have things in this game that has an impact on engagements during the session. Such as the amount of materials you gather to resource creates and now curse cannon balls and soon rowboats. Thats why i suggested to make the weapons stealable and destoryable. It's only a temporary advantage in a given situation that anyone can make uses of. Instead of your idea which while it would vary the engagements it would force crews into specific playstyles. Rather then given players the freedom to change and adapt. In simpler terms each pirate is made equal but each vessal and her crew are not.

  • @enf0rcer no one would be forced into any playstyle. That's the point of choosing a special weapon. As well there should be special weapon ammo, maybe a cap at 15 so everyone has it, but it is used when necessary.

Frist off my argument was that my idea is inline with the values of this game. Second your idea would force the whole crew into having to play to the advantages and disadvantages of that weapon like you do when you select a boat from the start. So even if anyone in the crew can use the weapon they forced into engaging the enermy in a certian way. Plus if everyboat had a special weapon it would make naval PvP prohibtively harder for new players as not only would they have to learn the advantages and disadvagtes to each ship but also the weapons on those ships. Not to mention the balancing issue that will arise from this. Thats why all boats have a similar style and set weapons. Besides if the crew finds or builds a weapon it would be a much more positive impact on the crew instead of having issues like deciding what weapon to carry. But i agree that we should give people the opportunity and tools to improve and define playstyle so add the the ablity to create a weapon based on crews playstyle.

@massir77 If you forced someone to PvP with you simply because you don't like them running away and you use the harpoon gun to pull them into a fight, yes that is forcing PvP on them aka a specific play style.

That's true. More to the point, harpoons were simply not used that way. They're designed to penetrate the soft outer layers of whales, not stick in the wood of a ship. Harpoons of the 17th and early 18th centuries were fairly primitive affairs. But I still want one for those damnable megalodons!
