Got my mind blown when I moved SoT to SSD

  • I play almost exclusively on Xbox. And lately I found that the initial loading into the server takes longer than ever before. I get to see 14 (repeating) pages of ingame hints before entering the game.

So I decided to check it out on PC. Want to know how many pages of hints I see? 2! Loading times are around 15 seconds on PC and 110 seconds on One X.

  • Yup it makes a huge difference
You'll be able to load in
    Get to the boat
Change the hull, sails and flag
    Start gathering resource
And then the rest of your crew will appear
    Lazy pirates!!!

I play on PC with the game on an SSD. Takes about 15 seconds to load to the "press any button" screen. Then around 40-45 seconds to get into a game from the "set sail" screen.

I mainly play with one friend on PC and a few friends on Xbox. My buddy on PC has his game on a standard HDD and loads in about 10-15 seconds after me. Then my friends on Xbox load in about 20-30 seconds later.

So your times seem accurate, yes. It's a nice feature but not sure if it makes a huge difference unless you server hop a bit, as there are no other real loading screens (excluding Ferry, which should be more or less the same for everyone).

I think if you have an Xbox One X, using an external SSD should also cutdown on loading a lot, but I've not tested that myself as my Xbox One is a Day One standard.

  • Yeah it's super fast on PC. Makes it a bit frustrating when I boot up my X as far as loading goes. Hopefully it's something they can improve?

  • @x1-two my friend came home with is x box one x and im on x box one there a huge difference between both console cant imagine on a good pc and ppl said no avantage on pc lol loading time and mouse keyboard is way enought to give a huge advantage to pc but the fanboy pc club m*********e gonna be there soon to say its not true

Whatever about K&M vs Controller (I use a controller on PC, and I'm tired of that debate), but this loading from SSD/HDD will give zero advantage. It's literally for one screen at the start of your gaming session, it has no significant impact on gameplay. Unless you see yourself in competition to load in faster than the rest of your own crew, and get the bananas on board faster? shrugs

    Wait, there's a competition?
    *Turns on pc.....

  • @realstyli did u play the game ??? Lol loading are everywhere when u come back from ferry or use a mermaid u have loading so its a huge advantage to come back quicker specially on a boat fight

  • Yesterday I was setting up a galleon for a couple of my mates who play on PC, they still had to get to an outpost and sell up before they could quit their game and join mine, they still got in before my Xbox decided it could be bothered to load lol, the biggest problem I have is getting a lazybeard before I've even loaded in, happens all the time, super annoying...

So you are under the impression that when you die and go to the Ferry that the game dumps all the assets out of memory and has to reload them each time, instead of keeping them in RAM? Okaaay

Yes, the person who collects the most bananas gets to be the Banana Captain. It's a very prestigious title indeed

You definitely reload a couple of seconds faster on PC.

  • I'd like to see some definitive evidence to that effect @X1-Two , not just an opinion or one scenario.

From my own experience, the times on the black repawn screen can vary drastically, even on a PC with an SSD. If I had to guess, I would say server connection and verification has more of a bearing on that than any actual loading from drive (but I'd need a dev to confirm that theory).

We do not. Respawning from the ferry is identical on all platforms.

I have a friend with a worse pc than me and I always load fastern than him.

  • A fast PC is also a lot more expensive than an Xbox. You can easily spend more on just one SSD. I think the graphics are better on PC also, depending on your video card (which can also cost more than an Xbox). But the gameplay is the same either way. I personally do much better with keyboard/mouse, but I know people who prefer the controller and use it on PC. So it’s personal preference.

If faster loading times and better graphics are important to you, consider investing in a quality PC.

Hey wow, you just made a post about how the PC and Xbox are equal and everyone should shut up and then here I find you, talking about how the PC is faster to load.

A PC with an SSD loads the game faster when you load the game the first time. There is no difference when loading from Ferry of the Damned after dying.

  • @x1-two so I assume "we" Pc Players should get a little bit higher share of loot, wouldn't yarrrr agree? (just joking mate)

  • I know this is old, but with me + friend on PC and GF on Xbox X, we’ve definitely noticed a difference in loading times, not just when starting the game.
Yes, not too much loading difference from ferryman, except when the ship has been sunk, or if mermaid location is far from the actual ship location.

In all instances the Xbox is always last to join the rest, and will load longer.
