What was the point of removing names underwater if the mermaids just give you away anyway?

  • I can't understand how Rare thought that removing names underwater would make it easier to sneak up on people when the mermaids will spawn next to somebody's boat and make noise. It completely ruins the ability to sneak up. There should just be a way to call the mermaid if you are a certain distance away from your boat, that way you can actually stealth in the game instead of hoping that the other team is either blind or deaf.

  • @flying-poopla give me a conch horn and i'll show you how i call a mermaid/man

just a bit more epic than this guy ^

  • I still see names under water...

  • Not everyone is looking out for mermaids while sailing. It's still easy to board

  • Simple,

Removing the mermaid opens the door to a whole lot of frustration/griefing, for instance, people could start camping islands and killing unsuspecting crew members right before turning in their precious loot.

Secondly, the Mermaid only appears when you are sufficiently seperated from your ship or spend x amount of time in water. Thus its perfectly possible to ''stealth sneak'' your way onto someone's ship during a fight.

  • @warlord-skarrik First of all, no it doesn't. Second of all, every time I try to board a ship I have a mermaid pops up right next to them and it makes audible noise that I know they can hear, because I can hear the noise of enemy mermaids. Camping islands is not "griefing." It is a stealth play that shouldn't be betrayed because of a broken "return to ship" mechanic.

  • So basically you're angry at Rare for not letting you camp at outposts? XD

  • @flying-poopla so you're b******g because they only made it slightly easier to screw over others? Hmmmm? Cry me a river!

  • There are a lot of tricks to make the mermaid spawn where you want, experiment a bit and rememwber that 90% of times they spawn right in front of you while swimming

  • @celestron90 said in What was the point of removing names underwater if the mermaids just give you away anyway?:

    Not if you're above it..

    Shouldn't anyway.

  • @ninobrown666 First of all, I don't camp outposts, so you are talking out of your a*s about "screwing people over." It is a stealth breaking mechanic to have a mermaid spawn automatically with an audio cue. There is no dispute in that. Nobody should have to b*******r backwards to have the game not give you away when trying to be stealthy. Also, camping outposts is not "griefing" or "screwing people over." It is a viable tactic in a game about theft. I won't just cry you a river. I'll cry you an ocean and I guarantee it will have more content than this game. I bet you are one of those people that sees any form of PVP as "griefing."

  • @realstyli Where did I say I camp outposts. I don't have to. I will meet you where you are and sink you. But saying you are enhancing stealth play and having an obviously stealth-breaking mechanic in your game is just ridiculous and another example of the myopic design philosophy that Rare is implementing. They don't think things through and it is clear. You should use that XD face when you can actually comprehend what somebody writes in their post, otherwise you just look bad.

  • @joseph83 I shouldn't have to jump through hoops to prevent the game from automatically giving me away. It is just terrible game design.

    XD

  • @realstyli Not sure what that is for considering all of that is true and you didn't understand what I actually wrote in my replies to people. I guess if you are happy with your lack of reading comprehension more power to you.

  • Oh, I understood perfectly what you were implying.

Camping islands is not "griefing." It is a stealth play that shouldn't be betrayed because of a broken "return to ship" mechanic.

But I'm far too old to get into this discussion, good luck with your camping, dude ;)

  • @realstyli Lol, again I have never camped an outpost since I've played this game. It is incredibly boring and has poor ROI. I wasn't implying anything. You are the one who injected your own perception of others who don't play this game as a "peace-bringer" into this conversation. I straight up said camping outposts is a valid tactic. Never said I engaged in it. I think veganism is a healthy form of diet - it doesn't mean I practice veganism. As far as your age is concerned, it seems like that could be the cause of why you can't seem to understand what I write. But yeah, you must be above discussion once it becomes apparent that you are wrong. Shows that maturity you have going for you.

  • Lol, again I have never camped an outpost since I've played this game. It is incredibly boring and has poor ROI

You realise you contradicted yourself in just one sentence?

Also, you're the one who brought up camping outposts as an example of the mechanic being "broken".

If you don't engage in camping, why are you concerned about it?

  • @flying-poopla thats a good point

  • @realstyli Again, that pesky reading comprehension coming into play. I am not concerned about camping. I am concerned about people taking my valid complaint about broken stealth play and trying to combat it with accusations that I use it to camp, as if that would even be a valid counterpoint. If you would have noticed, I mentioned nothing about camping outposts until somebody brought it up in a reply to my initial post. At that point, I said that camping an outpost is a legit tactic and not "griefing." So good job on that one there.

Also, that sentence is not a contradiction in the slightest. It is pretty obvious that camping outposts will be boring and have poor ROI. There 6 outposts in the map. There are on average probably 6 ships in the map at one time. I would have to assume an equal distribution of those ships across the map constantly for this to even come close to being worth it. This is never the case and the distribution of ships per map is lopsided and rarely never uniform during a session. Let's say that I do get a ship to come up to my outpost. I have to first hope they have worthwhile treasure. Since most people run light on treasure since they never want to risk it, the ROI is reduced even further per unit of time spent camping. So you ultimately have probably 30 minutes of waiting (that's being generous) punctuated potentially by a ship coming and dropping off one voyages worth of treasure, if that.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that this is a bad strategy for making money or having fun. So next time you decide to accuse me of engaging in certain types of play, you should probably check your facts and use a bit of logic because everything you have responded with is just incorrect.

Do you understand the meaning of gameplay and balance?, you can't design features that remove any glimpse of counterplay.

Not me bragging, just me being honest. We make stealth plays every play session on this game. The mermaid is a anti-stealth mechanic and stealth plays are still very easily manufactured.

Honest question, have you put any thought into the consequences of removing mermaids from the game or giving players the option to unsummon their mermaid?

Just because the game is about theft and piracy does not mean Rare didn't want the game to have large percentages of players abusing the unsummon feature. A galleon crew could literally just all sit at a different outpost and troll players who are playing the game. All so that your cover isn't blown while trying to board someones boat???

Removing the auto mermaid spawn would be gamebreaking period. The amount of swimming kegs and swimming boards I have completed with a mermaid present in this game are over 100 by now. Never once have I been compelled to write a forum post to complain that an unsuccessful boarding attempt was because of a broken mermaid mecnahic. Maybe they saw me, maybe I screwed up, maybe they saw the mermaid...which is part of the game....a necessary evil.

  • @lobofh It's called sound. You can hear people getting out of the water and onto your ladder. You can see the swimming on the surface and just below it. There is your counter play.

  • @sneakler You guys act like the mermaid is the only line of defense against boarding. It isn't. You can very clearly hear when somebody comes out of the water on your ladder. You can easily see them swimming on the surface and you can also see them swimming just below the surface. The problem lies in the fact that the mermaid is completely out of your control and can give you away with its clear audio. There have been times where I was unaware of somebody sneaking up to my boat, but was alerted by the mermaid coming out of the water and making its sound. Tell me how that is not game breaking from a stealth perspective.

  • @flying-poopla

You leave my sweet, sultry mermaids/mermen alone!

I have had this happen before as well. Where the only giveaway was the mermaid spawn noise. This has happened 3 or 4 times though, and possibly only twice while there being hundreds of times I have spotted players by other means. You should know by my gamertag that I enjoy stealth in all games. I just feel like allowing people to despawn their mermaid would be a mistake. We just disagree and sorry if I came off as rude earlier. I just think it is a necessary evil in this game.

I wonder if Rare would ever introduce hardcore servers for this game that included no mermaids, increased wind penalties for ships not at maximum wind/billow while giving a massive increase in speed for billowed sails to increase the ability to close distance on fleeing ships by rewarding perfect sailing.

Would be interesting but I don't know if the game has a big enough hardcore community to populate it. They would have to increase loot values or rep gains by 25% to lure more people to play in a mode such as that.

Also, you need to be a fair person as well. You technically have no idea what gave you away to the other team. You are assuming it was the mermaid. They could have saw you jump, heard the climbing out of the water sound effect, they could have saw you swimming. You are assuming it is the mermaid and nothing more. I have no issues with the mermaid mechanics and board boats all day every day.

  • They could even implement it into the trumpet/megaphone we have now. I agree mermaids should be called.

The mechanic isn't broken. It works as intended. Just because you don't like it doesn't make it "broke"

I don't think the mermaids are that big a deal.

That's just a slice of the cake. If a player wants to spawn camp an outpost there is no ladders, swimming or sound cues. There is your mermaid.

The mermaid is a good mechanic to fix some issues that can happen in standard gameplay, and as everything it has pros and cons, you need to play with it, this is not spec ops scuba simulator.

  • The only issue with mermaids is the sound - it’s appearance should only be audible to the person it’s bound to. We know this is technically possible because this is the way it works with the music for the mermaid and the sounds of other items, like the Chest of 1,000 Grogs.

Apart from the noise giving it away, the mechanic is fine.

  • Sounds like an angry outpost camper. Poor widdle camper.

  • @flying-poopla I didn't say word one about camping or grieving. simply mentioned there arr better things to whine about.
Like say constant server crashes or skull bountys that don't spawn

  • @scurvyrod Lol never have camped and don't need to. That is a great addition to the discussion here by accusing me of something. Something that is a perfectly legitimate strategy by the way. I don't really understand why people play a game without safe zones that is about pirates, and complain that people camp the locations at which you turn treasure in. I have had people camp my outposts before. You know how to combat it? You check the island before you turn stuff in. Or how about you turn stuff with multiple people. I have killed plenty of people camping me at outposts. It wasn't hard and they got nothing.

You claimed I wanted to make it slightly easier to "screw people over." You consider fighting people and taking their treasure "screwing them over" as if it is some aberrant behavior. You also mentioned nothing about other things to "whine about." It seems like half of you people responding in here either don't know how to read, or don't understand what you are even saying.

  • @sneakler I can be sure when I hear them say over their mics "mermaid in the water, watch the ladders."
