Meaningful Weapon & Equipment Variety (Feature Request)

  • Id like to preface this with by saying I'm having a ton of fun with the game. Not sure why but digging up those chests is just so satisfying.

Whats lacking here is functional variety of gear and I think this is the single thing that could improve the experience the most. Cosmetic upgrades just aren't that fun and don't motivate me to grind for (Other than those sweet sea dog sails).

So Here is my list of fun, practical and functional variations of existing weapons and equipment in no specific order:

    1. Deeper tankards.
Having lots of different looking cups to drink from is nice and all, but wouldn't it be great if the rarest ones would let you drink even more with a single refill? Plus maybe throw in a few variations that let you throw your grog in someones face.

    2. Shovels
Lots of possibilities here for shovels that have a random chance to dig up some trinket of treasure. One very cool idea would be to allow pirates to re-bury their found treasure, perhaps to mark it for later and avoid handing it over to an attacking pirate crew.

    3. Spyclasses
Varying magnification and treasure glint. Any other Ideas?

    4. More Instruments
      Enough said.

    5. Lanterns
This is already a good example of functional variety. I'm liking the different colors of light available right now. would be cool to see a green ghost flame lantern.

    6. Compass
Maybe some amount of storm proofing and a step counter as potential upgrades?

    7. Weapons
This is the big one. Every weapon type should have variations with balanced stat differences. For example, a flintlock pistol with more ammo but less accuracy and a longer reload. Give them a slightly different look, sound and animation. This would give us something to work towards.

I want to hear everyone's ideas and opinions. What variations do you think should be in the game? If your not enjoying the game as it is would this improve the experience for you?

  • Definitely want to hear some other peoples ideas.

  • I totally agree that there should be items to work towards that has some effect but still keeps the PvP playing field even.

Maybe a compass that stirs when a cave system is close by or a book.

Maybe a shop lantern that can reveal hidden messages that lead to secret areas. (Edit: Not needed in quests, but can be found and that leads to different quests. Because you already have the lantern.)

Clothes to unlock that makes one able to survive a certain weather effect that leads to hidden islands or a frozen biome.

It is more than possible to add items that has an effect on the world while still keeping the PvP completely balanced, just more people need to voice this. ;)

  • I'd rather keep everything cosmetic only, and not have to keep guessing what sort of loadout another player is using.

Plus it would really stink if you get a "hidden message" quest, but nobody in your party has the right lantern to reveal it.

  • Totally agreed, that thud is such a satisfying thing.
I like your ideas, and I think it would be great if there was some meaningful variety to them (though not sure about the last one, but I guess I would like to see more weapons as well).

I understand why PvP needs to be fair and have non progressive gear (as it stands, experience alone makes a whole lot of difference in a fight) but I don't see why PvE can't benefit from a slight progression. Shovels that dig faster, and weapon attachments that increase damage against skeletons or something and so on.

And if I may add, I think it would be nice to have lootable cosmetics and other fun things (shanties, lore etc) and maybe even a (black?) market to sell them to other pirates.

  • as much as I know rare wants everything to just be cosmetic, I don't see any game breaking issues with these, no crazy advantages to be had, especially since it's all stuff you can buy within the game, plus, if you're a new player and don't have the items but somebody in your crew does, you're still benefiting.

  • While your ideas are cool OP, when you add perks to items it penalizes new players, especially in a PVP centric game.

Secondly it also leads to homogenity where everyone looks the same, uses the best gear, same vehicle, etc, etc.

But rather than just come in here and firebomb your post may i suggest a compromise that doesnt hurt game balance?

Maybe they could add perks for your pirate that could be unlocked somehow. As long as these perks dont effect combat (this includes ship maneuvering) then i could be ok with it.

  • The compas already has step counter. You just have to hold it upright while walking and the controller vibrates with each step you make. 😆

i never use one, i did enough the step counting ones i can fairly accurately guess the distance from a glance and just jump and dig where it is
