Chest decay time?

  • Does anyone know if there’s a decay time on chests once you put them down? Some times if I see a ship coming at me me I like to hide my chests on the island and come back for them latter. I know I have hid a chest for some where around 20 min before and it didn’t despawn.

  • @sergent-c****r Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that chests don't have a despawn time, if there is it's very long. I believe it depends on your server. So if you leave the chest on one server, and then change for some reason, chest will not be there.

  • @zelemon37

Right. What happens to chests out at sea when a ship sinks and no one claims them? Do they just float there till the server ends? Could some one just come apon a bunch of chests floating from a wreck?

  • I left chests on an island and forgot about them for hours and they were still there...I threw chests into the water next to an island, came back about an hour later...they were still there but could not be picked up.

  • @sergent-c****r I remember seeing barrels in the water randomly one day... either there was a recent ship wreck or they just didnt despawn

Barrels are quite common. Seagulls will be flying above them. They contain consumables.

  • @sergent-c****r I was wondering this myself. I had dropped a chest in the water while being chased. When I went back for it, it was gone.

Chests in water will eventually sink. So if it's in the middle of the ocean it will go away, but if it is close to land it will settle on the bottom of the ocean.

  • The chests stay till they are turned in for all I know. If you hide a chest on an island, be aware that any other pirate can pick it up and loot in. So if it's gone, most likely somebody else picked it up in the meantime. See a chest? Nobody around? Hell yeah! Take it your self! Hrr Hrr Hrr.

It should have been on the bottom of the ocean. I had the same situation and the actual chest had floated to the bottom of the ocean even though it looked like it was still floating.

Have you received the screen notification for world change?
Of that happens when you don't have your treasures with you, it will disappear.
    Or perhaps someone took it.

    Was that the case?

I like to perform that tactic too and mine were always where I left it.

  • @sergent-c****r

Due to first hand experience, i don't think so.
I had just returned to an outpost, to offload my chest when a ship started to come into port. I was forced, to hid one the chest in a bush.

I managed to sink the ship and return to the outpost this took about 15 mins or so since it was a galleon and i was playing single player. Anyway when i returned the chest was right where i hid it. I don't know if it being on an outpost is relevant or not.

  • I am seriously hoping that Rare set up something where chests never de-spawn. Or at least if they do, it's over a couple of days. That would really add to the immersion of finding the treasure that is left behind or lost by other players. And if that is the case, it would be kind of neat to see a pop-up of who originally found it, or held it last that way you could either get it back from them or tell them you stole it xD Maybe even show a message of how they died or lost it. I know that would be a LOT of background work and a LOT of things to store on a server, but it would be pretty awesome!

  • I can tell you that if a chest is in the water, after some time you wont be able to pick it up even if it has not sunk completely. This happened to me in one if the stress tests.

I cant say if it is any different if the chest is on land, as I havent tried that.

Im not so sure, during one of our plays last scale test, we boarded a galleon, stole 2 chests and hid them far deep in the water (we had no boat to take it with us).

One stayed with the chests while the other scuttled the ship and brought the ship. By the time the ship was back, the chests were still there, but not moving or able to be interacted. I am not sure if this was a bug, or it was in the process of despawning.

  • @nunoazuldimeter

I never lost my chests but I was just curious if there was an actual time limit on chests.

  • @sergent-c****r
I've spawned into a game and went out to my boat and found chest floating in the water next to my boat

  • Left on an island theyll stick around as long as youre still in the same instance or someone hasnt stole them. Left in water however they have a lifespan of 3-4 minutes IIRC...ive saved sinking chests before however but yeah they can bug out I hear.

  • @sergent-c****r Interesting question, I’d love to hear an official answer.

It would be cool to stash treasure and come back for it later, with confidence it will still be there (assuming it’s very well hidden).

You could then use it as a bribe to get rid of an attacking ship, or a safety net.

  • @snowbodhi
Yeah, it would be nice to know if there is a time limit on them. “officially”.

  • They already do, i believe.

  • “Touch my chest better be to tickle me or you’re going to lose a hand.”

  • Thanks for asking this because I was wondering myself. Another thing on my mind is can you bury any treasure in a different spot once you dig it up?

  • @hk6719 not at the moment. its been requested tho. and rare has probably seen the suggestion.

  • @sergent-c****r I have seen them appear to disappear upon sinking their ship and I've also seen chests and supplies float to the surface after I sunk them.
I think the latter is the intended outcome but can't say for sure.

  • @senilegold Believe so too although I've also had the occasional disappearing chest while on water. The supply barrels from recently sunken ships do seem to always disappear after a few minutes though, or maybe it was just server overload during the tests.

One thing I'm certain is chests will always float up at first and then start to sink after a few minutes (2 to 5 minutes maybe) and I've also heard somewhere from the devs they wouldn't despawn ever.

  • @senilegold
There must be some kind of mechanic to it all.

  • If there truly is no despawn, I think it would be awesome to find one of the uncharted islands and just drop Chest after chest there. "hoarding swag"

  • There was also some sort of mention in the patch notes of one of the scale tests, about chests washing up on shore.
I assume that is an intended result of chests from a sunken ship, when the floating timer has expired, they will respawn on a shore somewhere.
I have zero acurate information on how long they float (others have said 3-5 minutes, which may be right, and could go along with the very few times it seemed to me that a floating chest went missing), and whether or not the washing up on shore thing worked at all - and how that works (where they appear on the island, which island, etc.).

  • @pdt-mindstream
It’s funny you say that. Last scale test I found one randomly just off shore but under the water. Which I thought was weird. I have found plenty of random ones on land but that was the first one I have ever found under the water just off shore.

  • @sergent-c****r Can't say for sure but I don't think they disappear if not claimed

  • Yo all..... So I parked up with my boat with sail fully up but no anchor dropped...as I was exploring a very large island with riddle to solve I came back only to find the mermaid man in the water... Where's my boat Im sure I parked it there lol...darn must have had a sneeky hole somewhere I didn't know about. Or the skeletons must have cannoned it when I was on the other side of the island. I had stored 3 treasure chests on the deck not inside. So I swam to where I thought my boat sank and sure enough I could see my chests floating few feet from the sea floor. Oooo thats ok I thought then when I swam near them I was not able to pick them up.... grrrr this needs fixing ASAP a chest surely would have sank it seems to be a bug. This is the 2nd time I have seen a floating chest and not been able to pick it up. I wish they could be either collected from where they are or make them sink to the sea floor to be collected.
I hope Rare read this and fix the floating chest bug.
    Thanks
