Helm idea

  • While using the helm and leaving it to quickly turn or lower a sail, you're unable to let the helm spin in its direction you're turning it to.
My idea is to have an option linked to the sprint button (default Shift) that when you would steer left or right and hold shift it would continue going that direction until you hold it again(this wouldn't work in a storm).

This way you could throw the helm in one direction and quickly do your tasks in between and rush back to get back to steering.

That would be a nice feature!

  • This was mentioned before. Despite being a good idea, it was pretty much ignored.

  • @inbred-chimera
I'm not entirely sure if this is a physical problem, in pirate movies you see this happening.

  • that's not a bad idea. I'm imagining something like a fast turn which spins the helm really fast. it'd be useful both for managing sails while still turning, and to steer faster in emergency situations.

  • Perhaps I misunderstood OP, but it's already like that. If you bank the helm all the way to the right, provided you're not in a storm, it'll stay banked right and you're free to adjust sails/do whatever and the boat will steer right until you take the helm again.

Edit: OH I re-read OP. So your idea is to be able to quickly press a button or something to have the wheel continue to turn (which is a considerable amount of time for a galleon) while you run and do stuff. Idk, I feel it would break immersion.

  • @princeofpromise
If this is a possibility IRL it wouldn't break immersion, now I mentioned seeing this in pirate movies not knowing if its physically possible.

  • I've seen it in movies. I assume the real life system works similar to power steering in modern cars, where force applied to the wheel is not directly transferred to the rudder.

I don't think immersion would be an issue. The game doesn't explain a lot of things and its goofy nature helps to maintain immersion in those situations.

  • Just turn it all the way it will stay.

  • @imgemineye
I get that, this is only to be able to go from a centered helm to steer right without being at the helm in the next 5 sec~

  • @swoxie420
Oh ok I see what you mean. I would agree with you if it took a long time but imo there's no reason to add that feature for something that only takes 5 seconds.

  • That would be dope, and make solo a breeze!

  • @imgemineye
It can take considerably more time then 5seconds.

  • @swoxie420
No you were right it's around 5 seconds.
