Closed Beta access issues

  • As a long time insider (and member of the Pioneer programme) I thought I had access to the Closed Beta. Unfortunately I'm consistently confronted with the error "Sea of Thieves Closed Beta is currently not available in your account. Here’s the error code, in case you need it: 0x803F8001" when starting the game (in a blue Windows messagebox, so not an in-game message)

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game, opting out of the insider programme and back in using the Xbox Insider Hub in different orders, but occasionally I'm able to get in and play, but when logging out (or getting kicked out) I'm again faced with the "Sea of Thieves Closed Beta is currently not available in your account. Here’s the error code, in case you need it: 0x803F8001" error.

I've seen the messages on Twitter and the homepage about Beta connectivity issues, so I've been patient, but now I'm starting to worry that I'm going to miss the Beta completely. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • I believe alpha access doesn't automatically grant beta access and you must have been invited by SoT to participate. The beta ends tomorrow anyway.

Could be, but I also received the email inviting me to the beta on January 23rd

  • I'm getting the same error message now, and the game used to work just fine for me. I suspect the new windows update might have messed with the game. :S

  • @robbaman if you are on PC, have you tried signing in to your computer using your Microsoft account? It's not the exact issue I had (mine crashed after showing the splash for a few seconds) but signing into your PC as your Microsoft account 'fixed' it. not ideal but it works for now. (also make sure the Windows Store/Xbox app/Xbox Insider App are all signed into the correct account...sounds daft but worth double checking)

  • @hotel-actual anyone who signed up to the Insider before December 1st (Founders) was automatically granted access.

  • @triheadedmonkey Thanks, but I already sign in on my PC using the same Microsoft account that is used for my Xbox-account.

  • @robbaman tried logging off the PC and signing back in again? I only mention it, as someone else said it worked.

    or perhaps running WSRESET

Tried running WSRESET but unfortunately still get the error message...

  • I'm currently trying an uninstall/reinstall to see if it helps. Will let you know if it does.

  • @robbaman This is a fairly common error and I've been trying to find some solutions that have worked for others, some suggest it might be due to a windows update, others that it's to do with sign in - I did find this article however, which may help

I know it says Xbox but the cause of the error might be similar, or there is this as well

  • Uninstalled the game, did a wsreset, reinstalled the game (which took about four tries before the windows store would do it) and its finally working again!

I've tried that too, and the game will work, unfortunately (for me) when you exit the game (either voluntarily or not) you get the error again... at least I do. So far I've been able to play the Beta a couple of sessions, but a 13GB download every time I want to play the game isn't exactly as appealing as it sounds :(
