It would also be cool if there were a Tavern Lobby that you could log into, instead of going straight to the Seas. Much like the lobby from Arena, where players could log in and mingle with other players, get to know people and set up a crew, then launch into the Seas together as a more structured form of Open Crew.
They had something like this for the Arena, but had to silence everyone because of the toxic language players would use towards each other. On top of that, having open-mics while in a naval battle kinda tells your opponent everything they need to know. "I'm going to board them!"
It would also be difficult to see what's going on on that particular server first. For example, if I hop on and see a stacked FotD, I want my crew to join me so we can get going ASAP as time is of the essence here.
