Adding shields or bucklers to Sea of Thieves would bring a fresh layer of depth and swashbuckling flair to combat—fitting perfectly with the pirate fantasy. Historically, pirates and privateers were known as "swashbucklers" for a reason—they used bucklers (small shields) paired with short swords for close, flashy duels.
In-game, shields could be used as an off-hand item when equipped with a new short sword—a lighter, faster weapon with no charge lunge but quicker swings and defensive utility. Players could parry incoming strikes or deflect pistol shots, creating a fast-paced, skill-heavy melee alternative to the current cutlass gameplay.
Alternatively, the shield could be a standalone main-hand weapon, perfect for blocking and stunning opponents up close, offering a whole new defensive playstyle for boarding and close-quarters brawls.
It’s a pirate game—let us truly swash our buckles.
