Why I love this event…

  • Not to long ago I posted a story about how I secured a Chest of Fortune after a ship had sunk us at the fort. In that story I managed to row to Ancient Spire Outpost and sell the Chest of Fortune.

Well, today I was doing a skeleton fort as I imagine many of you have too. Over the weekend I noticed a pattern with these forts, you fight the skeletons, kill the boss and as soon as the fort completes, a ship will roll in.

Today was no different. I was solo at a regular Skeleton Fort and once I had completed the fort, I done a quick horizon check. Sure enough, just like the last few forts, a brig rolled up on me. I was able to quickly grab the vault key, jump in a row boat and row to Thieves Haven. Between me and the fort was a huge rock and after a few minutes some fog rolled in. I moved to the large rock and got on top of it. I waited as the brig crew searched for the key. After a few minutes, they left. I left it a couple more minutes before heading back. Once I did head back, I opened the fort to see a stack of Ashen Athena Chests.

I loaded it all up into a row boat and rowed it to Ancient Spire Outpost. The reason I didn’t go to my ship and return on that, is because the brig was still within visual distance of the fort, if they saw my ship return, it’s likely so would they. I managed to get it all onto a rowboat and get it to the outpost.

And that’s why I love this event. Not just the loot you may get from it. But the player interaction that has come with it. It’s like year 1 SoT again where people fight over forts and when people like me are outmatched, getting creative and giving your enemies the slip is really fun.

Aye, I hardly do forts when solo; but now I do.

When another crew comes in, I just hide / tuck on the fort and see the crew that sunk my ship get sunk by another crew. One time the whole server was there and I had to swim over three times.

I try to get some loot out of the vault, but that's just a bonus - just trying to get the 5 forts for the 'stache - only one to go 😁.

  • Avoiding other players isn’t really player interaction now is it?

I’m stoked that you were able to complete a fort and sell a mega haul but the truth is solo players would be much more able to defend themselves from other solo players compared to full crews.

Events like this one and when new content releases really highlights just how absurd it is to not have an option to level the playing field for solo players and the answer isn’t and was never safer seas.

Believe it or not there are lots of solos out there that would be able to enjoy and appreciate the PvP half of the game a lot more if they weren’t forced to fight full crews.

It is possible to brute force your way to complete the five forts to get the mustache as a solo player. I’m not saying that isn’t possible. What I’m discussing is more about making PvP as enjoyable as it can be for solo players.

  • Also, imo fort keys should be marked on the map for all to see or removed and simply have the vault door open upon fort completion.

Fort keys that are not marked on the map are simply tools for griefing other players, imo.

  • @honoramongus when I say player interaction, I mean over all. There’s been a few forts that I have been at where a sloop has rolled up on me and I have fought for the loot. Some I’ve lost, some I’ve won. But I’m willing to bet that after this event is over, it’ll be safe to do forts again.

Although I did not exactly interact with this crew, they tried to interact with me, which they may not have if it weren’t for this event.

  • @lem0n-curry I got my five done last night, but I’ve continued to do the forts just because I’d be insane not to take advantage of this loot. Good luck with your last one! 🫡

  • @riftenwatcher

I totally agree that without an event like this normal skull forts are not something that attracts sweaty crews to come and check it out so aggressively but again events like this are exactly what the game needs and again if Rare would add a solo sloop roster to the ship type selection screen and put anybody who chooses it on a server with other solo players exclusively, imo solo PvP would become much more enjoyable than it currently is and events like this would be more appealing to solo players.

  • @honoramongus Fort of Fortune keys are marked on the map. Regular forts aren’t and I don’t think they should be. Sometimes, part of the fun is hunting down where a crew may have hidden the key. If it was just marked on the map for everyone to see that would make it even more unfair on the solo players.

  • @riftenwatcher

I stand by what I said about fort keys.

If they are marked for all to see they are perfectly fine. If they are unmarked they devolve into griefing tools. I’m aware of what forts have marked keys.

  • @honoramongus ok dude.

  • @riftenwatcher

You were able to grief the brigantine crew because of an unmarked key. That’s great for you as a solo player but a bad experience for the brigantine crew who wanted to contest the fort. It’s all about perspective. If you can’t see both sides you can’t make a fair assessment.

  • @riftenwatcher

I was about to say that the brig was me, but we never found the key and the fort never opened. We dived to new server cause it was taking forever and the sloop we were trying to steal from kept coming back.

  • @xdragonman15558 ahh, quite similar! I only returned the fort once and was in a rowboat when I did.

I got my last one (FoF) yesterday - started it and done a few rounds of skellies and then three sloops on the horizon setting course for me.

When it gets that busy, they don't look for an extra barrel on the fort; got the skulls including two ashen wind ones as a bonus even, guess they were in a hurry and didn't want to await the return of one or more sloops 😁.

If my crewmate wasn't moving house and too busy to play SoT we would have done more forts, that's for sure.

  • @lem0n-curry excellent play! And yeah, it’s surprising how many people don’t check barrels at things like forts.

  • Thinking like a true pirate! Outsmarting your foes, vanishing in the fog, and rowing off with the treasure—this is the kind of story that makes the seas feel alive. Well played, captain!
