Devil Roar

  • Absolutely love NO volcanos and geisers right now. Devils Roar would be so much better. It reminds me of how the game used to have overkill on kraken, skelly ships and megladons and then they cut back and let us just sail. I would love a permanent extreme nerf of that junk in Devils Roar and just let us play.

  • Totally agree that zone has been FUN this week.

I think the volcanoes should be turned on always but not spewing rocks all the time.
I think geysers should only spew when the volcano erupts.
I think the volcanoes should erupt for only two minutes at a time, and only on the islands themselves, so you are forced to dodge and weave. But the 10-minute eruptions need to go away.
And I would toughen up the skellies a bit to offset my proposed volcano nerf.

  • I think they could clean up things like diving into lava. Pretty wild how many times I've emerged to massive damage lol.

Getting wrecked at a seapost isn't very fun

I like the idea of the environment causing interference in pvp and in travel, not just getting wrecked for 10 minutes at some island/seapost or having to just sit there out of the area just waiting for an island to chill out. Some of it is unnecessary because I don't think it really adds anything interesting, just a time sink.

  • So you just want an easy place to get loot without threats from the world.

Nah, keep DR as it once was. Only the most fearless and straight shooter pirates would dare cross those waters.

It too quiet and empty. I miss my hunting grounds with no players :p

  • Yes, this event just goes to show how much more fun the D.R. would be if they made the changes you suggest. I am having a blast actually exploring the islands and doing voyages without the tedious hassles. If they nerfed loot and xp to justify making the changes, I really wouldn't care at all. I'd rather have fun at a basically outcast region that has so much potential over earning a multiplier from having to deal with geysers and 10 min volcanoes that I would say most of the player base finds annoying. For those looking to avoid other players at all costs by hiding in the D.R. in a pirate game, go play safer seas.

  • The risk of a volcanic eruption is what makes the Devil’s Roar so treacherous. It is supposed to be a terrifying and forsaken place (Hence the name Forsaken Shores). I just feel ashen loot should be worth way more than it currently is.

  • While I do love the volcanos I think their frequency is too random. Islands should have a cool down and the sea ones should have even longer cool downs. Both times the roar has been inactive like this has made the zone very enjoyable for myself and many others. I am sure they internally see the number of people completing things in the roar skyrockets too. They put a lot of effort into this part of the map and when it first released everyone was playing out there... The whole original map of sea of thieves was basically like your own private server back then because everyone wanted those new cosmetics. Now newer players have missed so many cosmetics and there's not as much fomo as there was back then. The only people playing in the roar now are people who know that 95% of the player base avoids the place so you can basically have a pvp free zone just having to deal with the hassle of some volcanos and once in a blue moon running into a hostile player.

They tweaked the zones activity one time and made the volcanos erupt very rarely. A handful of people complained about this so they just reset it to normal and never thought about it again until these past 2 events where they have turned the zone off altogether. The fact that the Burning Blade can chase you so fast and roams everywhere but the roar also gives a nice escape from that event if you have no interest.

  • @thamb0 the "go player safer seas" statement is so ignorant and frustraiting. people who use that argumenet either know nothing about the game or progression or the mentality of people who play pve games. theres literally no progression to make there. unless your trying to tick a commendation box. you cant gain reputation, the gold income is so low that loot isnt even worth picking up unless you are trying to get "sell x number of x item" commendations. you cant play on your own ship that you farmed for and purchased and put in hundreds if not thousands of hours of effort into being able to customize. you cant do pirate legend voyages... because athena loot USED to be the best and most rare loot int he game but now they hand it out like candy with pop up plunder and these bottle voyages and fort of fortune and all the other avenues of finding pirate legend loot. its been years now since the chest of legends was the rarest item in the game. chest of fortune is now king of loot. and now these orbs which are super easy to farm are 2nd best. yet athena on safer seas? god forbid....

  • @keylessword4029 Thanks for calling me ignorant just because you don't agree with a statement I made. I have thousands of hours in the game. I think I know the mentality of people who play pve and pvp games. SoT is a PvPvE game. It was not meant to solely be a PvE game, but Rare has at least given the PvE only players a place, albeit by correctly taking out some things that should remain in the high seas. I don't go play games like LoL or Counter Strike and expect to level up with PvE modes and the same goes for SoT where the devs have said from the start that they want it to be both PVP PVE combined. You did nothing to counter my statement made towards players that hide in the Devils Roar simply to avoid PvP, so the point I was making is that if players don't want to see any change to the D.R. because it might "allow" more players to frequent the region, and they can't stand the thought of participating in any PvP in a literal game that is built upon it, then safer seas exist. Instead, you just cast insults and then rambled about safer seas not catering to you.

  • @thamb0
    Totally agree

  • The fact that no one is usually over there and now that the volcano and geisers are turned off many are over there speaks for itself.

It's an event that requires 5 voyage completions and the voyages are lucrative, that's why. It's not organic interest.

The pve threats can be annoying but the main reasons people avoid it currently are,

Vibe, people often prefer prettier colors
Gold value is everywhere now, it's no longer the spot for some extra gold.
Box of secrets is irrelevant now which is the roar's version of removing the rarity of the shrouded ghost. People have 10, 20, 30+ now on the records without having even ever found one organically.

These regular events are flooding the environment with mass reward for little risk. Doesn't change with the risk turned off, outside of events.

There is very little the roar has to offer in current SoT.

  • @wolfmanbush I love the look and vibe of the Devil Roar over the other areas personally. I really think that it's mainly due to the "extra" environment that keeps players. Everything has a big multiplier on ashen treasure and yet no one goes there. I grant that the current bottle quests skew the numbers by a large margin, but if Rare were to test a nerf to the environment and see if retention of players is boosted in that area for a specific time frame, then maybe they could look at making it more permanent and changing the current loot multiplier. Also, is it possible to spawn at Morrow's Peak Outpost? I don't recall ever spawning in there.. Maybe they could look at changing that and adding a sea for and and another skelly fort to the area?

  • I don't think the hazards should be removed. However, I do think the timing of their frequency should be increased and randomized. It isn't "difficult" when it becomes an annoyance of waiting for a volcano to stop exploding to bring your ship closer to the island, and then you just so happen to get the same effect as hitting every red light on your commute back home from work. It just doesn't feel good. But when it's more random, and feels less like clockwork, and in a staggered out frequency, I think it would be more exciting again, because you genuinely do not know when it will happen, and you can take the risk or not.

I like the skelly camp concept, it's bittersweet that islands get changed like golden sands and these skelly camp islands but I think it at least adds something fresh.

Adding something on the islands themselves is something that I think would be more fun. The big islands have lots of room, they could build on them.

Even like an above ground treasury type of skelly camp where people enter and fight waves of new pve to open the areas for treasure.

  • @wolfmanbush If they added a Seadog Sanctuary/ Stronghold on a large Devil's Roar Island for the castaways of the Seadogs, that would be pretty cool.

  • The new bottles are exciting enough for players. If it stay, it means rare have learnt to understand their community

  • I always avoided due to volcano's feeling like a percentage of the meteor's were designed to aimbot you as if a skeleton was firing them at you instead of just flying completely randomly. I never liked the design.

  • @captainluke56 people were there because there was an event to encourage people to go over there.

  • The Roar without it's roar is such a BORE.

Set it back to the original settings. When it was actually dangerous.
Turn the volcano back on at Morrow's Peak since we don't spawn there...or let us spawn there. Keep the nifty red bottles. Those were fun. Add a skelly camp and a sea fort. Activate the Skelly fort out there more often (as a FoF too). Spawn HG matches next to active volcanoes!

  • Devil Roar needs one thing, content, there is nothing interesting to do there, the area should be hard and demanding with better treasures, there should be new end game voyages in this area, there are not even Spanish or skeleton forts, but there is Molten Sands Fortress which looks phenomenal, but they are not doing anything interesting with this fort, they should add a new, better world event in this area, a better fort than Fort Fortune, the whole area looks nice, I like sailing there, but there is nothing to do and the rewards are meh...

They shouldn't make this area easier, just add a lot of interesting content.

Players want quick and easy money like on Alliance Servers, but where's the fun in that?

  • We did do a lot of red bottle quests the past week, while doing another voayge (mostly Athena) - getting loads of gold and reputation was great, but I did miss the volcanoes and geysers. It somehow felt wrong to dock our vessel without any risk. I expected more ships to venture there, but I think we only had three other crews to fight and saw maybe two other ships there this week.

I guess people did only the 5 quests needed for the sword and then went on to do the Burning Blade - or maybe they were getting bored without the usually environmental threats as well.

IMHO they shouldn't have removed the threats during the event.

  • Devils Roar needs the Ashen Bottles as a permanent fixture, the volcanoes need an adjustment, geysers could probably stay the way they are but the eruption should be rare.
Otherwise the Roar for me should be removed freeing up space for quality of life game issues. It's a dark uninteresting place for me personally and I haven't been there unless I do the commendations attached to the area.
I did enjoy the Ashen Bottle event though. It was nice to get loot that made a satisfying impact on Guild reputation.

Without the event I won't go there again until the next I have to thing.

  • @captainluke56 yeah this event made the DR 10x better than it has EVER been. And I liked the old DR, just not the stress of it.
