A new Beast...

  • Had this idea floating around for awhile and thought I'd finally put it to keyboard. A sea dragon. Not just that, but a three-headed, lightning/fire spitting legend of the deep!

The idea was to bring it in slowly, over the course of a year or so. Have it really build up tension while not telling a soul what's going on or giving hints/updates whatsoever.

    1. It starts with a roar. A deep, howling roar that mixes with the kraken one at night. Makes you second guess if that just some new audio, or if you heard it wrong.

    2. Then comes the oddities. Like say, seeing a galleon in the distance, clearly a player's, just there. You watch it keep going until it hits an island, or just float in place. You go over to investigate and find no one, but see something... unnerving. Massive, deep gashes raked into the sides of the ship. Like claw marks.

    3. An even better one. You're sailing along with your crew, then set upon by the kraken! You take up arms and begin your defense. after knocking away a tentacle or two, something weird happens. The kraken lets out a scream you never heard before, and the tentacles, almost all at once, shoot down like they were damaged. All you hear is fighting, struggling, as it goes deeper, and deeper, until all is quiet. eerily quiet.

    4. After roughly half a year, people begin to catch glimpses of something. Pirates claim to see the fin of some creature breaking the surface of the water and disappearing. Some swear they see glowing, patterned lights gliding just under the surface. And others, late into the night, say that when they peek over the side of their ships, they swear to see monstrous eyes staring back at them.

    5. The reveal in my opinion should be rather grandiose and terrifying! The SOT players should be well shook up at that point. Sailing along, your ship suddenly rocks, as if it hits something. Then, out of the sea, two massive clawed hands grab hold of your ship! With terror instilled, three heads slowly rise from the sides and front of the ship, with a roar that cries for your blood!

The Battle: The battle itself would be multi-faceted, with multiple things you need to do to beat it. The heads of the Sea Dragon are the main threat, being able to take massive bites. If that doesn't get you, then the electricity or flames will! That's right, this beast can fire both flames or lightning from its maws! Though that sounds scary, the attacks are pretty telling. Have a bucket ready for flames, and be ready to dodge the lightning! The dragon's hands can move around, being either a minor thing or completely hampering you. What do I mean by this? Well, what if it just so happened to have a hand blocking one of the cannons in clear sight of a head. That, or it decides to wrench the ship to one side, causing you to fall in the water! The claws and heads aren't the only things that are dangerous! With its serpentine body, it could strike the hull with its tail, or wrap around the ship, and begin to crush the hull!

If you're able to drive the beast back into the depths, you'll be rewarded handsomely for your victory. IMO if you beat it, you should be rewarded a good handful of that new kingly treasure, along with maybe some new loot.

Loot: Obviously new loot and cosmetics should be added, so how about...
dragons tooth- A prize for beating the Sea dragon. You can sell them to the Hunter's call or Athena for rep and a bunch of gold.

Thunderstrike Cannonballs- Cannonballs infused with the Sea Dragon's lightning power, they strike with the force of a blunderbomb and stun any players on the ship for five seconds!

Firestrike Cannonballs- infused with the Sea Dragon's flame power, They hit the same as a blunderbomb and spread flame in a wide area on contact with a ship, both inside and out!

YOU CAN ONLY GET THE CANNONBALLS FROM THE SEA DRAGON, AND EVEN THEN ONLY A FEW!!

Sea Dragon Hunter Ship Set: I'm imagining the set would be a mixture of battle worn meets dragon imagery/trophies. The cannons would be the long barreled ones. Scarred up with Sea Dragon's teeth wrapped around it, and the visage of a dragon's open maw, like the Tribute Peak cannons, they would be quite intimidating. The sails would be the tattered ones with the three heads staring down a sinking ship, while the hull would have the raked claw marks from earlier, but with a trailing sea dragon body rolling down the side to the figurehead. The figurehead...IDK, there's already several multi-headed dragon ones around. How would you make it unique to them?

  • Seems really cool, love the whole build up. If they were to add another sea monster, though, im expecting it to be a big sea serpent that.. probably can't spit fire and only has one head. Still in love with your build up idea, I'd love to see them use that for a new sea monster, whatever it may be.

  • The reason I did three heads is because there’s SO MANY depictions of a three headed sea creature in the game. Cosmetics, pictures, in the storybook quest for Tesha there even a depiction of a three headed monster. There’s even one on the map for the last Legend of Monkey Island quest. It can’t be a coincidence there added this number of things.

  • My issue with anything like this is what feedback is being catered to on the topic of hunting.

We are at a point where megs run away and do not attack and people still asked for them to be nerfed and the devs still catered to that.

The game is way off course for hunting imo. A harmless meg is on the eve of being nerfed in spawn rate.

The only people that stick with a monster hunt are the hunters, everyone else ignores them and tries to get them nerfed. New beasts should cater to hunters, not just killing, not fish in a barrel, actual hunting.

Organic random and consistent encounters that get left alone, otherwise it's a linear voyage to kill a contrived monster spawn.

If a passive meg is getting nerfed again, no other beast stands a chance in this environment.
