SoT Crash at splash screen with Error code: (0xc0000005)

  • Since the 19th February update I can't launch the game, it crashes with Error code: (0xc0000005) at splash screen, reached support, reinstalled twice, with MS store too, nothing happened. As instructed by the support tried to change D3DVersion=12 to 11 in the GameUserSettings.ini but the folder (Athena) in the %LOCALAPPDATA% doesn't exist...

Are some of you dealing with this issue ? Since the backend change (the game was working perfectly) ?

EDIT : I have a clue, the Athena folder got deleted when I uninstalled the game, and it won't be created untill I can launch the game, but the game won't launch because of the Directx12.

So to summerize : I can't fix the crash, because to fix the crash I need to change Directx12 in the .ini file in the Athena folder that got deleted when I reinstalledl the game, and can only be created when the game launches at least once.

PS : this is the subreddit post I did if you want to look for details from other people

I can confirm that this folder only gets created at startup. I use the Steam version, but also have the Windows Store version and this folder did not exist until I booted up the Windows Store version. You could try to do it manually.

    • Create the folder tree C:\Users"YOUR USER NAME"\AppData\Local\Athena\Saved\Config\WinGDK
    • Create a set of .ini files in the WinGDK directory using notepad or your preferred editor (You might need to verify access permissions for Everyone/Your User account)

    Compat.ini
    DeviceProfiles.ini
    EditorPerProjectUserSettings.ini
    Engine.ini
    Game.ini
    GameplayTags.ini
    GameUserSettings.ini
    Hardware.ini
    Input.ini
    Lightmass.ini
    Scalability.ini
    WindowSettings.ini

Most of these files are empty. The only ones that do have content are the following, and I've pasted the contents from my files below:

    GameUserSettings.ini

    Engine.ini

Make sure you change D3DVersion to 11 in the GameUserSettings.ini. If this file exists and this line isn't in there, add it manually. If you get to the main screen, be sure to go into settings and make sure everything is configured correctly before trying to play.

  • @d3adst1ck
Same problem, I tried everything and error 0xc005 shows up everytime I launch the game

  • Exact same problem here for me and my wife, 2 different systems with wildly different hardware, 2 different versions of Windows, identical issue. Tried everything I can think of, including @D3ADST1CK's suggestion above, drivers, win update, reinstalled several times, still nothing.

  • @d3adst1ck Already tried with my friend's folder but still have the issue ... I thought maybe the game doesn't recongnize the files I copied because of the paths not written in its core folder, I don't know much about this

  • Same thing here. If the support know's about the problem our only hope is to wait until they fix it i assume.

  • I have the same problem have you find a solution ?

  • Hello everyone, I tried a million different options for solving the problem and still managed))), wrote to the support service in which they were told to do "https://support.seaofthieves.com/articles/17131268845970-PC-How-to-change-the-version- of-Direct3D-following-the-February-update" did but it didn't help, later I tried to update the video card drivers but I had the latest version installed so I rolled back the drivers and downloaded them again, I also updated windows and everything worked!!!

  • @vbxtt3r Hello i tried and its dont work for me

  • Also looking for the developers to fix the missing 'Athena' folder after update.

  • @andrewai2022

Tried addition of missing folder and files by @D3ADST1CK above (not solved my side.)

  • @vbxtt3r did those things but nothing worked :/ , glad it worked for you !

  • So after a while, support contacted me and made me use a bash script and a software on windows "disk clean up":

    Uninstall Sea of Thieves.

Follow this (the support message for deleteing currupted files) :

"I have attached the script, you will need to extract / unzip the folder to gain access to it.

You will be prompted for password when complete, the password is 'Rare' (no quotes). At this point you can either keep the folder as it is, or copy both of the files within it to a new folder of your choosing. -

From here right click the file called: DeleteOldInstalls.BAT and select Run as Administrator. - Select Yes to grant the file access to change permissions on your machine. - Read the disclaimer, we cannot take ownership for any problems encountered. (don't worry I tried it and some people tried it it's safe) - Should you be happy with this type in the bolded text and press Enter: I AGREE - Type in the letter in which drive the game is installed on. It is important the letter is in caps.

Link to download the tool: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1x2WXKSJWFfl80xN-69_Db8BRjAR30YH1/view?usp=sharing. (Safe link)"

Press the Windows button and type 'Disk Clean-up'

From the main 'Disk Clean-up for Windows (C:)' window, ensure Downloaded Program Files, and Temporary Files are enabled and click OK. Then confirm deletion.

The click 'Clean Up System Files'. Once that updates, enable 'Windows Update Clean-up', 'System error memory dump files', 'Temporary Files' and click OK then confirm deletion.

Once Disk Clean-up is completed, ensure the account which owns Sea of Thieves is signed into the Windows Store and Xbox Console Companion app then reinstall the game.

It's easy to do, takes 15 mn (without Sot download time), and the game works just after that. No Directx12 problem of any crash. The game took about 1 mn on splash screen, then a longer loading black screen then usueal, but I guess it depends on your pc but it worked !

Try it, I hope it works for you.
