One tactic of Sea of Thieves combat which never fails to get a roaring cheer is the illustrious “deck shot” occurring when a boarder, launching from aboard your vessel, lands directly aboard the enemy’s boat. However, as plucky and devastatingly effective this method is, the difficulty to do so prevents it from being a reliable strategy for most players.
Introducing: The GROGPACK, a barrel of frothing grog, worn upon a pirates back, which would allow them to have a fun little jet pack, functioning similarly to that of Pharahs from Overwatch.
This item would:
- slow you slightly while worn.
- have a limit amount of “hang time” before needing refueled.
- could be refilled at any vessels grog barrel
- could be shot, mid flight, to send the hapless boarder spiraling off target.
I think this item would work as a great set of training wheels, simply allowing micro-adjustments in flight, easier vertical island traversal, and, perhaps most importantly, limitless opportunities for sandbox fun!
While I’m sure some rightfully recognize that, by having this item effect pirate speed, it does functionally nerf you in PvP, I see this minor speed reduction as incentive to still board discretely (removing your Grogpack before rushing anchor) or, to take it off mid-flight, immediately dropping from the sky, but absorbing some fall damage.
