DA sails

@triheadedmonkey My matey be spittin' facts! If you HAVE to use DA sails to get an advantage, you probably aren't the best sailor. Seasoned pirates were maneuvering/utilizing regular sails long before DA, and they still dumpster other crews with ease. You don't need DA to be good.

While true that argument also applies to just about every exploit and cheese out there.

You don't have to use it to perform, but it would make for a better experience if it was out of the equation altogether.

  • If you need to hoist the DA sails, you should also have to add training pontoons to each side of your ship limiting your turn performance.

    SAFETY!

What about... you know... balancing it ?

Some say they give an advantage in-game (They certainly do, and it's against the "same tools" rule but hey, not the first time Rare has contradicted itself and probably not the last (ELO system that rewards streaks, I'm looking at you)

Let's just put a minor inconvenience to them.

    Less cloth? Less speed.

That would make it functionally identical to just rolling your sails up all the time

    Not so simple sadly.
You see the "Curl" is a task.
A rather bothersome task at that.

The idea "Less Cloth - Less Speed" is ... an idea.
But it has a huge problem: Basically NOBODY will use any sail that will not give full speed anymore. I guarantee you that.
Now you can ofc apply the same stance to the ability to select sail shapes as in nobody will use the normal sail-shape anymore.
    HOWEVER:
To that I say: So what? Not only is that already the case in a way due to the excessive overuse of the DA-Sails, ...
    it also ... well ... ... ... makes sailing more enjoyable 😅

This is the primary reason why I am 99% against the removal of the V-Cut.
I simply have much more fun from a gameplay-PoV ... and tbh, I don't think I can go back to sailing the Brig with default square sails again.
It is the Box of Pandora in a way.

To quote the DA-Sails themselves: " The sails are unfurled, a heading set. There may be no turning back from this dark course. " ...
I have a strong feeling that whoever wrote this knew EXACTLY what he was writing there ...

The only real way to close this Box now is to release the ability to select sail-shapes.
YES it will be a bit of real work for Rare.
BUT it would do more than just solve the DA-Issue :D
It could be a new vast Gold-Sink and an awesome feature in of it self AND make sailing more enjoyable for ALL SAILS :)

Other than it being not super easy for Rare there are literally NO disadvantages yet it is a very reasonable path for SoT

... Personally, at least at the moment I am cautiously optimistic that we will get the ability to select Sail-Shapes :)
... Oh how glorious will the day be ... and imagining customizable Harpoons and Lanterns in addition to that ... ... ... Glorious.
And this is NOT dream.txt like someone asking for Rope-Swinging ... this is all well within the realm of feasible possibility :D

  • Sea of Thieves was designed so there would be no purchasable advantages in which you are able to jump into the game and have the same equipment as everyone else. The Dark Adventures sails are the only sails in the game that have a V-Cut in them which gives a slight advantage for sailing at full speed. It is still an advantage in the end of the day you are able to get for 8 million. They will still remain special for just because of the cost of them but the V-Cut is still an advantage for those who are able to afford them making it unfair for newer players.

I would be happy for the V-Cut to be removed.

  • @ug-omnipotent But why not give different shapes of similar nature to everybody instead? (for a price ofc)
It does make sailing much more enjoyable on Galleon and especially Brig ... 😅

PS: Around a year ago a LOT of the ppl that now want it removed actually were vehemently arguing for this to be a Non-Issue and the advantage completely ignorable ;)
    They were ofc wrong ...

  • @scheneighnay I don't disagree. When it comes to exploits (not sword lunge, before anyone tries to make that allusion), I think they need to go.

  • @captainluke56 Thats a W idea
