Hunter’s Call Concepts: Capturing Pets (with Elemental Variants) and Kraken Elemental Variants

  • Hunter’s Call Concepts: Capturing Pets (Color Variants and Elemental) and Kraken Elemental Variants

    Gotta Catch ‘Em All
What if in addition to buying pets with ancient coins, you could also purchase a single pet license along tranquilizer darts that would allow you to capture a rare pet in the wild? You would be able to use the tranquilizers in the Eye of Reach or pistol. This could be something that could be earned via Doubloons (limited licenses per month through Larinna) or bought with ancient coins.

    Pet Rare Variants:
Imagine searching for a rare pet variant that only spawns 1% of the time on a specific island, as it appears from the bushes, you pull out your eye of reach, snipe it with a tranquilizer dart and then use your pet license to call it your own? WoW has a number of rare hunter pets which could be an interesting addition or concept that could be modified for the Sea of Thieves!

Battle with Pets and Rare Pet Elementals
I’m not calling for a full on Pokemon or WoW hunter pets (but the popularity is established – so maybe I am?!) but imagine if your pets could boost your damage against a certain PVE enemy type (Skeletons, Ocean Crawlers, Ghosts, etc). Perhaps there could be certain elemental variants such as sunken, ashen, shadow, bone, spectral variations in addition or in place of color variations that are exceedingly rare. Elemental pets would bestow an elemental buff to cause your pirate to do slightly more damage against that type of PvE enemy with firearms and sword.

    Some ideas:
Ashen – Player receives damage buff/multiplier against Ashen Skeletons and Ashen Lords
Sunken – Player receives damage buff/multiplier against Sirens, Ocean Crawlers and Sharks/Megalodons
Spectral – Player receives damage buff/multiplier against ghost enemies
Bone – Player receives damage buff/multiplier against skeletons and skeleton lords
Shadow – Player receives damage buff/multiplier against PVE enemies at night

Other Less Ideal Pet Battle Options:
Less desirable options would be to have the captured pet join the fight to cause damage over-time in certain PVE (never-PVP) encounters. Another option would be to add a hunter staff as a weapon option to command your pet to attack in PVE with an important caveat always being that the hunter staff and pets wouldn’t be able to attack other players.

    Elemental Crossover to Krakens
Everyone loves Megs and the hunt for the shrouded ghost is very real, but the kraken is definitely less popular. This may be largely due to the lack of variety in the encounters. A kraken is a kraken same old, inky boredom. Imagine if the aforementioned elemental crossovers for pets and their associated buffs were applied to the kraken? I’d love to see a spectral kraken appear at night or an ashen kraken appear fizzing in the Devils Roar using your pet to help you conquer the beast.

These are just a couple of my thoughts. Feel free to add or provide additional ideas and feedback.

  • @drrikrespect While an interesting concept, I feel like tying bonuses to pets is a bad idea mostly because the damage buffs against pve enemies. While maybe not doing anything directly in pvp, it could make doing pve content much faster, thus giving other players less time to try to counter or intercept you to get the loot. Having a free-to-play method to getting the pets would certainly be nice though, perhaps even pets that can -only- be gained through the sort of pet hunting mechanic.

The Krakens on the other hand I 100% agree with, even if they don't do anything different than the normal Kraken, at least having visual variants that offer different loot or commendations/cosmetics would be great.
