Quality of Life changes that are essential for improving the PvP experience.

  • With the coming update being PvP oriented, the game is sorely overdue for a lot of changes to PvP itself. Rather than talk about bugs and features I think the most urgent and easily added ones are quality of life focused, and should come ASAP- it's kind of ridiculous that the game is missing this stuff.

    • Option to disable sit prompts and trinket prompts on ships
    • More granular mouse sensitivity options. Right now mouse sens cannot be adjusted with enough precision to achieve exact parity with other games without significantly changing mouse DPI.
    • Slimline ship banners
    • Let us disable milestone notifications, I really am sick of getting part of my view blocked by a notification every time I've fired 75 cannons. This is super frustrating in the heat of battle especially since it blocks an important prompt.
    • Larger FOV settings. Maybe controversial but the FOV of this game is absurdly low, it needs to be 105 at minimum like most other shooters- and ideally I'd prefer the game let you have an FOV of up to 120. Right now the max is so low that it genuinely causes motion sickness for some players.
    • Let us opt-in enable friendly fire so that players can easily duel their teammates and set up TDM's.
    • Save-able quick weapon loadouts.
    • Sorting options for barrels and crates.
    • Keybind for bait.
    • Ammo crates at outposts
    • Birds over sunken player ships.

I'm sure there are many more things that I can't think of right now as well.

I dont understand this idea/request. Why are you guys having such a hard time moving around your own ship and click these? Of course, as long we can toggle it off and on, sure but Im still confused.

    Let us disable milestone notifications

or just dont play on captain ships :p

    Larger FOV settings

I do believe the Dev have said, No to this very idea.

genuinely causes motion sickness for some players.

motion sickness vs "Stretching the game and making it look ugly.

Let us opt-in enable friendly fire

Blunderbombs & firebombs. first one to die loses. No swords or guns because those are broken :p

    Ammo crates at outposts

    Check your ship.

    Birds over sunken player ships.

    Why? I need reasons.

  • Let's be honest and acknowledge a mistake many games make.

PvP being what it is, dictates that every player in it engaging in it has the same mechanics. The same settings, on any setting that has mechanical impact.
This means every player should have the same mouse sensitivity and FoV whether they like it or not.
Whatever the FoV max is, needs to also be the minumum. No changeability. Between the two stated settings, this is the more important one, I figure.
When a PvP game doesn't force that, it's a mistake.

  • @burnbacon If your going to make an argument about what was said, please use pathos & ethos in your statements rather than just going off your own beliefs :p

  • @steaminscaldren You want him to use… emotional language? On a game forum?

  • @scurvywoof If you're going to make an argument about a subject, you have to first look at the point he is making, after which you should make a detailed response describing why he is wrong or correct, if you don't see the world of the speaker and don't go down to his level then it just becomes a pointless argument and nothing is solved, no minds are changed. when you put it that way "You want him to use… emotional language? On a game forum?" it does sound ridiculous but in order to change someone's mind you have to see where they are coming from Mongbeard's experience of PVP, he believes that these changes should be made to better improve the game,

  • @moogbeard sit prompt friendly fire and birds get my vote.
Fov they've definitively said no, possibly even a restriction set by Microsoft unless I'm misremembering.
The milestones notification I get your logic but I still doubt I would turn it off.

Stuff like barrel sorting and saved load outs make sense but also then adds a level of skill to the speed at and organisation that you do beforehand so less sure I agree. There's a risk of keep making everything easier which reduces skill ceiling

  • @MMO-Oxy Agree with everything except the FOV changes there's a reason most games default 90 and the devs have already said no.

The main reason I've found is I still accidentally sit on the map table 😂 although I did also have an altercation trying to defuse a stronghold keg. I think changing the sit key to be the same as the emote button would make more sense anyway.

    Birds over sunken player ships.

The same reason you see birds over every other encounter?

  • @triheadedmonkey A dude trolls on every post. I call him out and you delete my comment? Do your job better buddy. Half his posts people are calling him out for this on every thread. If my posts are getting deleted his sure as hell should be.

There are rude and ignorant people everywhere. It’s sad but true. If someone is trolling you, simply respond in a respectful manner and flag the trolling post for modification.

Please respect the mod team, they are doing a hard job the best they can.

I can understand that not everyone will get allong, but the mod team are just trying to keep things under control and peaceful.

Mouse sensitivity is something that is quite complicated, and it can be affected by many different factors, but fov, based on how it works in this game, definitely does have a direct advantage, they really set it up strangely.

@MMO-Oxy Agree with everything except the FOV changes there's a reason most games default 90 and the devs have already said no.

Most games default to 90 because that's just the "default", that number became the standard 20+ years ago during a much different time with much different technical considerations, completely different display technologies and a 4:9 resolution standard. Many modern shooters these days aren't even defaulting to 90 anymore but instead go for 105- some examples being Overwatch and Valorant. Games like Apex Legends, Fortnite, Warzone also let you raise your FoV well past 90- in general most game developers are not as strict about max FOV as the SoT devs are since they are well aware that FoV is an extremely subjective experience largely dependent on differences in user setups and hardware not unlike other graphical settings.

If you're going to argue that higher FOV's are bad because they "distort the image" then I don't think you understand at all how FOV actually works. Perspective cameras do not distort at any FOV, it is always a linear and accurate projection- fisheye is a different thing entirely that is not applicable here. From the user's perspective the image can seem distorted but this is entirely reliant on the user's viewing angle and distance from the display relative to the FOV- simply put a higher FOV will seem more "distorted" if a user is further away from the display. This is also the reason why smaller FOV's are hated by PC gamers in particular, it's not due to some snobbery but simply because they are so much closer to their displays, the small FOV's genuinely cause disorientation and motion sickness as from their perspective too many things are moving around too fast within their vision- a person sitting on a couch and playing from a TV may have no such issue with the exact same FOV, because subjectively the experience is fundamentally not the same for both users.

The other common argument against increasing FoV in SoT is that the older Xbox consoles cannot handle it and to only have the options on some platforms would be unfair. This has more merit as it may objectively be true (though realistically FoV advantage is extremely minor), but players on older Xbox consoles are already at an insane disadvantage with much lower framerates and worse draw distances- not to mention the fact that they are on console and do not have aim assist, which means PC players will simply always have the upperhand. Worrying about slightly higher FoV's at this point is splitting hairs and if those players really don't want to deal with the disadvantages they can simply turn off crossplay.

I'm sorry but the popular arguments against higher FoV in this game just do not hold up under any level of scrutiny.

  • So ignoring the FOV portion since Rare (unfortunately) made their stance clear on that...

I agree fully to the rest Rare said in the previous podcast they would put a higher emphasis on PVP and you're right in that we need proper PVP QOL changes to go with it!

    • Option to disable sit prompts and trinket prompts on ships

Yes please... This is especially awful for those of us who use reduce hold to interact and a single midclick can waste a tone of time. I don't want to sit or adjust trinkets while I need to be bilging and repairing my ship...

    • More granular mouse sensitivity options. Right now mouse sens cannot be adjusted with enough precision to achieve exact parity with other games without significantly changing mouse DPI.

Never considered this but you are 100% rights better DPI options would be great! I just conceded and made all the adjustments in G-Hub.

    • Slimline ship banners
    • Let us disable milestone notifications, I really am sick of getting part of my view blocked by a notification every time I've fired 75 cannons. This is super frustrating in the heat of battle especially since it blocks an important prompt.

Yes... I don't want pop ups every 75 cannonballs telling me that I leveled a milestone. In fights with everyone shooting on a gally that pop up is up almost 24/7 and frankly it's awful. Rare please just let us disable these.

    • Let us opt-in enable friendly fire so that players can easily duel their teammates and set up TDM's.

Yes. Please. Right now select players are relying on private servers to practice TDM and others have tones of experience from Arena. Right now so many players are at a massive disadvantage not being able to practice hand to hand at the same extent as arena players used to.

    • Save-able quick weapon loadouts.

Just add favorites please... For everything.

    • Sorting options for barrels and crates.

This would be an amazing QOL life change to have barrels autosort as you store from a storage crate especially!

    • Keybind for bait.

Yep. Would definitely use it more often it there was one.

    • Ammo crates at outposts

Would be nice, weird there is not tbh. Nice for when fighting over loot on an island.

    • Birds over sunken player ships.

YES YES YES YES. I cannot emphasize how awesome this would be especially after you had to fight and sink multiple ships at once.
