The Mystery Begins!

  • Hey so I couldn't find anything but when I was at the fortress right next to Sea Dogs Rest I swear I was hearing what I think was a bird flapping it's wings every now and again and making some noise, it definitely wasn't the regular bird noises that you hear all the time.

Maybe it's just some normal ambient sound from the fort but I didn't recognize it and it was definitely coming from a source and sounded like it was inside the fort as well.

    Might be nothing though!

  • So we just went to Sea Dogs Rest with 3 crews and played all „We can sail together“ as it was the song in the video and we thought maybe we have to play it with more crews. But that didn‘t do anything

  • DeMarco is dead... May he rest in peace. I dressed in my Arena garb and payed my respects with my friend Sobbs.

I would have been posting earlier if I had seen this thread!

I checked Golden Sands, crescent isle, and the sea fort, no clues.

Then I sat down to think.

If DeMarco is dead, why hasn't he returned from the Ferry? There are three possible explanations. The first is that someone used Graymarrow's curse to trap DeMarco. But I don't think this is what happened. I'm expecting the unexpected here... and that curse has happened a couple times in the past.

The second explanation is that DeMarco was kidnapped in the Sea of the Damned. He couldn't have returned from the Ferry of the Damned if the Ferryman never found him. Given all of the Flameheart and Sea of the Damned-related events that have been occurring, it seems probable that Flameheart's phantoms may have found DeMarco before the Ferryman did.

The third explanation is that no one killed DeMarco. What if DeMarco offed himself? We know from The Fate of the Morningstar that the Ferryman drank poison in order to get to the Sea of the Damned and do the Pirate Lord's work.

What if DeMarco has done the same as the Ferryman? The bottle that he usually carries on his belt is detached from it, and it almost looks like he is reaching for it. Almost as if it was the last thing he did before he died...

What if, when DeMarco went to his father, the mission he was sent on required him to be in the Sea of the Damned? Maybe the bottle on his belt was given to him by the Pirate Lord so that he could go to the Sea of the Damned just like the Ferryman had? If given the choice, of course a Sea Dog would choose Sea Dog's Rest as his final resting place (unless, in the in-game lore this island wasn't named until now).

What could be done right now?

    1. The first thing I think of when I see a "scene of a crime" that we know nothing about is the Ferryman's Lantern. As soon as I'm done with this post, I will try various ways of acquiring the lantern and seeing if a scene appears on Sea Dog's Rest.
    2. The most peculiar thing about DeMarco's body is that there is no jacket. It's nowhere to be found on Sea Dog's Rest. I think that our best chance of finding the next clue is finding that jacket.
  • @tatapolus good information, back to the drawing board

  • There is one thing that I’m curious to ask about. Hopefully either @rare or another pirate could inform me with. If this is something that I’ve missed please tell me, but is this a mystery we could solve now? I don’t mean like we have all the clues now to solve it and all, but is the answer something we can find now, or is Rare still adding more clues here and there so we can find the answer?

I’d hate to think that we’re on a wild goose chase that has no goose to find if you know what I’m saying. I’d love to find this next clue as much as the next guy, but I’m afraid it’ll turn into a waiting game for the next clue… :(

  • @grumpyw01f Probably whoever committed this crime took the jacket to hide the way DeMarco was killed (stab or bullet holes) Something to think about.

  • I grabbed the "The Fate of the Morningstar" tale book and made the journey to Kraken's Fall.

I took the lantern to DeMarco.

Sadly, no luck. Nothing at the Glorious Sea Dog Tavern, either.

I wonder who this skeleton is?

I will try more ways to get the lantern in the future.

  • Maybe it's just coincidence, but the only place where I noticed the symbol of the rose of the winds as depicted on DeMarco's hat and bag, is on the flags at Plunder Outpost.

  • Quick question to those who pointed out the letters in the Mysteries videos: Can you point out to me where the W and the S are hidden? I only found N and E so far.

I might have another theory in mind, but I need to dig a lil' bit to see if it's something worth trying...

  • @capt-brookes I believe W in black is at the top of the screen to the left on the wall at about 1:12 ish I think. And around 1:22 at the bottom left is the S in gold on the golden trim left side of the captain’s chest. I might be off on the times. I slowmo’d the video the day it came out and found that. Check the comments on the video.

Also people need to listen to the word the 2 people are saying in the video and what images are being shown right after. Some of what they are saying is sus. "...Hidden. Some might say buried."

That kinda caught my attention too. Was wondering if there's something possibly buried near the body or another place. Very curious indeed.

As for my other theory it turned to be a bust. Thought that maybe the letters that showed up on the video, and the time they popped up, could work as coordinates, but nothing came up.

  • Been poking around DeMarco's skeletal corpse a bit, see if there's anything hidden under the dense foliage, didn't see much myself. Did notice a lot of players are coming up to drop off a treasure as some sort of respect it seems, which is cute. Had two Sloops do this the other day, one left three Captain's Chests on the rock and one left a Sorrows.

I think we're dry on clues, at least that's what I'm thinking so far.

EDIT: regarding my previous slip-up of the Ritual Skull 'clue' on Smuggler's, perhaps they could maybe at least remove stuff like that if it's no longer relevant, it's very tucked away and it doesn't do anything for anybody right now(?)-- and as having had no prior knowledge of the thing it was used for, I had assumed something entirely different that could've realistically fit in with the mystery theme.

  • Hi, me and my friends were poking around sea dogs tavern and going to the ship up top. Have realised both demarco and his sister both have daggers in their hearts in pictures. Maybe suggesting she is dead too and thats why shes missing. Not her as a suspect.

  • @swatgamer123
Those daggers have always been there. That's Amaranta's dwelling, and she hates both DeMarco and Lesedi.

  • What if... That is NOT DeMarco? What if someone is trying to hide where he ACTUALLY is by dressing a random skeleton DeMarco's clothes.

    • First off, the corpse is missing his jacket which might mean the tricker only got their hands on some of his clothes.

    • How did he even decompose in one day? This might be further evidince to the skeleton being a random skeleton as
Rose did not even complete her decomposition in 3 days (She still had her hair).

    • The green bottle DeMarco always had is detached.

    • Rare already stated that this will be a lot deeper and harder than anything we had before.

Yeah I can't find anything at all either. And in a way I'm feeling a bit discouraged. Kinda makes me wish this was Who Wants To Be a Millionaire so we could use a lifeline to help aid us a bit :P

  • @thorumsu they already said a beloved character would bite the dust and it would be part of a classic “who dun it” murder mystery

I think it is pretty clear this is DeMarco

The only questions now are who and why.

    • lesedi, being spiteful of Demarco shutting down arena
    • amaranthe, always being spiteful against the singh brother and sister
    • flameheart, no real leads here
    • another character

I dont think you get what I mean. I think someone murdered him and put a bait body to gain enough time to erase the real evidence.

I understand you very well, in your theory someone committed murder to cover another murder.

  • I have a new theory in mind. The culprit... is DUKE!

Hear me out! He's part of the Dark Brethren right? They needed to give Duke a test to show his devotion and loyalty to the group, and they tasked him to murder someone of importance. What better target than the son of the Pirate Lord himself: Demarco! Now that the deed is done Duke is now a loyal member of the Dark Brethren.

Moral of the story: It's always Duke!

  • @capt-brookes
He was already part of the Dark Bretheren though.

  • @grumpyw01f said in The Mystery Begins!:

    @capt-brookes

    T'was a joke :p

On a more serious note I'm out of ideas as to what any of these clues could mean or where to look next.

  • Today I decided to check some more clues. The music box plays "We Shall Sail Together." Well, Sea of Thieves just released a retro version of the song (sounds great, by the way).

Initially, this struck me as Sailor's Bounty for some reason. So, I ventured there. This is the closest I could find to the rock in the picture.

So it seemed like I hit a dead end, but then I remembered something DeMarco said.

There's nothing grander in life than a well groomed dog!
Like my Leopoldo, a more splendid four-legged friend you'll never see.
But alas, he was chasing a chicken on Sailor's Bounty and disappeared down a hole, never to be seen again.
A handsome reward, equal to my looks, awaits the pirate who brings him back to me.

I figured it couldn't hurt to search around the island, since it does have some relation to DeMarco. Then, I found this:

It looks like a skeleton leg with a dog collar on it... could this have some relation to Leopoldo, DeMarco's dog? I don't remember seeing this at Sailor's Bounty before... maybe I just never looked here.

I also found that you can sleep in the Trapmaker's bed. Nice one, Rare.

The rock in that retro art looks very familiar for some reason... anyone know where this could be?
To me, the retro art looks like the Mysterious Stranger, the Pirate Lord, DeMarco, and Leopoldo, but that could be confirmation bias... I might be finding clues where they don't exist.
Let me know what you think of my 'discoveries' so far.

  • A possible link to the Music Box. Since clues can be found outside of the game as well, Sea of Thieves is releasing their physical LP vinyl in a few weeks. It could be tied to that.

It has been delayed a few times already, so it could also be a dead end.

  • @grumpyw01f That dog's collar has been there all this time.

I like the way you think though....

  • @metal-ravage
Thanks for the info. I've never seen it before, glad someone could clear that up!

  • 6 days ago the Sea of Thieves Twitter posted a #SundayVibes video of Sea Dogs Rest that is six minutes long. Maybe there's clues in there? Perhaps music to play near the music box? Just throwing things out.

  • Hmmm... something occurred to me just now as I look at the body. Demarco's pants were red right? Why are they a different color with a few red spots here and there? Almost looks as if they may have been bleached? Not sure if it'd be that way just from the sun would it?

  • @grumpyw01f
I had a passing idea that "1989" was a hint to a potential clue. (The year was referenced in the tweet. My thinking was that there was an Easter egg similar to the Battletoads or Banjo-Kazooie cave paintings that referenced a game Rare published from 1989. I thought that maybe the island the "1989" Easter Egg was on had a potential clue to the mystery. From what I could tell though, the only games Rare published in 1989 was some licensed video games. Of course, then I realized they were probably referencing the "Party like its 1999" saying.)

I think you found the spot on Sailor's Bounty, though I'm unsure who the three pirates could be. I can see what you mean by guessing the Mysterious Stranger and the Pirate Lord, but I think the third is two skinny to be Demarco. (Maybe Stitcher Jim?)

Another thing, this style of pixilation on the artwork reminds me a lot of Monkey Island? I've been wondering if I should take a look around Sailor's Grave.

You may be right though; we both may be "finding clues where they don't exist." :)

  • Just got a new clue, maybe. So I already brought up this song.

    The caption reads:

We’ve released a rather retro rendition, and retro-ish vocal version, of Sea of Thieves standard ‘We Shall Sail Together’, for all those rovers who like to sail like it’s 1989! Or 1989-ish. Available to stream and buy now from your platform of choice. Cheers!

    Hmmm.... Why pick 1989?
Is NEWS talking about news or compass directions?
    N- 1
    E- 9
    W- 8
    S- 9

From Sea Dog's Rest, that's nothing. From Glorious Sea Dog Tavern, that's Thieves Haven. It might be a clue, or it could be that we need to keep a lookout for more numbers in the future.

  • @lucky11
I didn't see your post when I was typing mine. What a coincidence!

I think it's a younger DeMarco, before the Pirate Lord was killed, and before Leopoldo was lost. We really don't know when either of those things occur, but it's not a stretch to think that the Pirate Lord and Leopoldo were alive at the same time!

  • @grumpyw01f You may be on to something, also because they use the word rover, which is often a word used when referring to a pet dog (DeMarco's dog).
