Good console SoT players as Rare as the Shrouded Ghost?

  • I’ve been playing SoT on Xbox since October of 2020 as the primary game I play. I’ve never put it down and average about 20 hours per week on the Seas. I have tried to give myself every advantage, including going through every setting possible and adjusting my sensitivities to what I can tolerate. I have watched hundreds of hours of YouTube videos and twitch streams.

I suffered extensively on the Xbox One, putting up with its many issues trying to play the game until I finally scored an Xbox Series X late last fall. I upgraded my controller to the elite II, so I could map the paddles on the back to assist with PVP. Despite everything I have done, I am not as successful in combat as I want to be.

I wonder if there are any excellent console players out there, or are we at such a disadvantage due to the platform we choose that we can never be as effective as a PC player? I don’t see any streamers on consoles… it sometimes feels like console players are there to be fun encounters /content for PC players.

I’m not complaining if it comes across that way; it’s not intentional. I love this game (that’s why I’m still playing). I happily buy stuff from the pirate emporium so I can continue to support Rare in its development. I win fights, and I can also accept that there may be amazingly awesome console folks out there, and I am just an old guy who sucks at gaming. I don’t know if there are (hence why I am asking).

As may come up in the discussion, “Then why don’t you just switch to PC?”

The reason for that is I work in IT. I spend 40+ hours per week sitting in front of a PC, troubleshooting PC, operating systems, networks, hardware, software, etc. When I’m not working, the last thing I want to do is sit in front of a PC, let alone do any troubleshooting or anything remotely resembling work in my free time. However, I am considering it.

    Thoughts?

  • I think with the new generation of consoles, the gap between a PC gamer and a console gamer has narrowed considerably. I see that you play on the Xbox Series X, so you're in a very good position to compete with anyone. There are still advantages to playing on PC but only on a few things, in my opinion.

To answer your question, there are certainly excellent console gamers out there, I'm not one of them but I have met some.

PS: I forgot to mention that if you have difficulties playing against PC players, you have the possibility in the settings to choose to play only against players playing with a controller.

  • There are streamers that are decent and well rounded players and fighters that use xbox. Just like anyone they play to their strengths, slowly improve on their weaknesses, and work with what they got. Some people don't have the best hardware or the best internet we just do what we can with what we have.

but in general any player can be a strong asset on a crew when in the right role with the right work ethic.

People don't have to be excellent or perfect to be a valuable contributor on a crew.

Everyone loses plenty if they are solo and take chances. Xbox doesn't much matter there. We all get one balled and camped if it's wrong place/wrong time.

  • @ii-darvin-ii My first Mate is an Xbox player on the older Xbox and he sweats with us we are all PC. He can wipe the floor with any of the best as needed. So yes good console players exist but I agree they are rare.

I ran into the same issue once cross-play became a thing in PvP games. It is harder for me to PvP with a crew on PC. I was holding my own there for a while. Now I can’t put in the time it would take to improve to where I need to be to compete with most crews on PC. Heck, now I can’t even do well against other console players. But you might try sticking to the console-only servers to see if you have better luck.

Really good console players are up with the best. My crewmate plays PC with controller, she's deadly, you also get really mediocre KBM players. Was watching Fortnite world cup with my young son the other day and saw at least one player with a controller keeping up no problem. I would agree that level of skill on a controller is probably rarer though.

I do the same job you do and play my PC when I get back. :-)

  • @wagstr yeah Fortnite is for different reasons the auto aim on controller is huge...

  • Most people here are being hypocrites with many players who play on Xbox claim to be as good as any PC player but play Xbox only servers...
That being said there are some really really good controller players out there (xbox has its own problems with longer black screens so most really good switch) even in the NAL, but this comes due to cannon aim and not hand to hand.

Cannons on controller is arguably better than cannons on M&K but the difference is so large in hand to hand it is quite honestly hard to compete.

I play PC and I have tried controller and it is awful in comparison. Almost everything is harder on controller sword play in clunkier since it is hard to jump turn and attack all at the same time, shooting is harder since it is harder to aim with controller than M&K (no one mention fortnite as a counter to this fortnite has massive aim assist only on controller SoT has no aim assist)

As a result of these discrepancies plenty of really good players swap to PC and M&K with it being strictly better in almost all PVP scenarios.

This is also why I agree with Xbox only servers existing and encourage Xbox players to use them (wish PC players with controller could join to but that is another discussion)

Autoaim not just on controller I reckon, they been tweekin'...

  • Hit Registration don't help either, we just gotta accept we're old and sometimes we'll get stomped on lol

  • @ii-darvin-ii there would be one more thing, that can give you an advantage...a chatpad, that's what I have on my controller (elite v2 as well)
That chatpad is a keyboard attached to the controller...I got all the keybindings I need on this one, I almost don’t need the radial anymore for most tools
This works ONLY on crossplay servers, it's deactivated on XBox servers

  • @wagstr its not just on but look up the difference in auto aim between the two. It's significantly better on controller. There is reasons CS GO players will never play on controller even though it is technically possible.

  • @schwammlgott I got a xbox recently and one i noticed was alot more players use text chat yet i was on xbox controller only servers. When i asked they were using keyboards. Curious I guess maybe ive infact been on mixed servers?
So you cant use your chat pad to chat on xbox only servers?

Afaik you can...but you have to keybind one of the regular buttons on the controller to open text chat, then switch to keyboard or use the chatpad...but outside of this it doesn't work

Edit: just because favourized XBox servers, doesn't mean you really got into one...when you spawned in, it says in the right top corner either "play with everyone" or "play with xbox" (something like that)...server merges bring up that message again, so you could start on xbox servers, but after a merge you are on a crossplay server

  • You don’t need paddles from an elite controller to compete. Good controller players also are not as rare as you might think. You could search on YouTube for sea of thieves pvp montages on Xbox.

  • @ii-darvin-ii one thing you did not mention, was what display are you using? I've found that the series X is capable of 4k120 in some situations it does much better on a 2k120 panel.
