Your thoughts on hitscan weapons

  • As you all know, Rare is considering testing hitscan instead of projectiles for weapons. What are your thoughts?

I think hitscan blunderbuss would be fine and could fix lots of issues that the blunderbuss has (i.e. not one-shotting when it should've). Hitscan EoR and pistol would be fine close range, but an absolute hell during long distances where predicting where your enemy will be is all the difficulty (especially if you're on a rotating ship). I saw someone suggest a hybrid system for EoR and pistol, where depending on the distance to the closest object, you shoot either a hitscan or a projectile bullet. Granted, I don't know how realistic that is in Sea of Thieves.

Having the game decide between hitscan and projectile would be almost impossible, I think, and no one would like having an inconsistent bullet system.
I'm no expert or even amateur, but I know any hitscan solution would make the gun combat really weird. Calculating bullet travel would disappear, ruining those skills.
If maybe multiple hitscans could be used, that might be nice, but I don't know if that would work: Let's say that when you shoot, the game places a point at that position. Then, given the position and orientation of that point, there could be a hitscan this large from, say, .1-.2 seconds. Then another, larger hitscan from .2-.3 seconds, and so on. This way, only the initial point of fire need be recorded, and the rest is completed like hitscan, but in slower steps to try to preserve the slow bullets and bullet drop.
